Walker Cemetery

Walker, Arkansas

This cemetery is located about a half-mile west of Walker. This community is approximately six miles south of Searcy. Coming from Searcy on Highway 11, the road makes a 90-degree turn east toward Griffithville. Turn right onto Lewis Lane and travel about a half-mile; the cemetery is on the right side of the road. (Claude Johnson, former president of the White County Historical Society, in his book "A Humorous History of White County," had a word of caution for travelers going to Griffithville. "It is best to start from Des Arc," he wrote, "as the road is not nearly as crooked as the one from Searcy. The road from Searcy has about 14 sharp curves in it, and is believed to have been laid off by a drunk man chasing a rattlesnake.")

George Walker, who came to this area shortly after the Civil War, donated the land for Walker Cemetery and is buried here.

A listing of burials was prepared in the summer of 1968 by William E. "Bill" Leach, who later became president of the White County Historical Society. His parents, William and Ina, who also served as presidents of the Historical Society, are both buried here. Bill Leach listed 120 graves and found 39 unmarked graves.  Leach noted that "the remaining six rows of the cemetery is the Negro part (Southwest corner). There are 15 unmarked graves in the Negro part. Among the Negroes buried here are Sam Exum and his wife."

He also listed names of several people known to be buried in unmarked graves but had no birth or death dates. These unmarked graves are included in the list below. This cemetery may have been called Walker-Stewart Cemetery originally. Vanwinkle family records refer to an early burial in "Walker-Stewart Cemetery at Walkerville," however there is no stone for a Vanwinkle here.

Walker Cemetery was updated in March 2000 by Tommy H. Treadway of the White County Historical Society, a former postmaster at Searcy, who reported it to be "well maintained." .

WCHS member Leroy Blair visited the cemetery for the first time on October 19, 2000, and found it “nice and clean.” He returned January 5, 2007, and made a new list, adding Row numbers. Row 1 is on the east side of the cemetery. Row 3 will start at about halfway across the cemetery.

Also at the end of this list there is another list with the names of some people who may be buried at Walker Cemetery in unmarked graves.

There is also a list of Military Veterans that are buried in the cemetery.

The following abbreviations are used in this list DS = Double Tombstone TS = Triple Tombstone FM = Funeral Home Marker
