Smyrna Cemetery

Searcy, Arkansas

This cemetery is located at the historic Smyrna Church on Highway 36, about six miles west of Searcy.  Smyrna Cemetery was originally listed in 1968 by the Smyrna Extension Homemakers Club and published by the White County Historical Society in its White County Heritage 1969 issue.  The records were updated March 7, 2000, by Tommy Treadway of the White County Historical Society, who not only added the last 32 years of burials but also corrected some old transcription mistakes or oversights.  Historical Society member Leroy Blair visited the cemetery September 12, 2000, and added nine names and other information.   He updated again in December 2002.

When in 1856 it was decided to organize a Methodist Church the location decided upon was Smyrna, about halfway between Joy Mountain and Searcy.  This was a few miles east of the Union Church of this vicinity.  The spot selected was a beautiful one for a house of worship and there was a spaciousness that allowed for the burial ground also.  According to the White County Historical Society, the three-acre tract was bought from John F. Black and his wife Jane for $15.  The Trustees of the new church to whom the deed was made were Jacob Armstrong, T.B. King, Joseph Fortner and W.C. Pettey.  Those who contributed to the organization of the church and who became charter members were T.B. King Sr., Joe Grammer, William T. Key, James Haney, William C. Pettey, J. Douglas Armstrong, T.B. Ellis, Tom Key, William T. Dowdy, John Herrington, Albert Gilliam, John J. Peebles, Nelson Black and William Irwin.  It is possible that there were others whose names are not found in the records. 

For about a half century it was known as The Smyrna Circuit, there being six other churches served by the same minister.  Among these we find John W. Boswell, R.G. Brittain, George A. Dannelly, James M. Talkington, Z.T. Bennett and John H. Dye.

The church is no longer in use but a burial as recent as 2003 was made here.  In 1998 the church building was deeded to the City of Searcy, and a preservation project started which is still under way.  At the time the building was turned over to Searcy, a one-acre tract south of the church was sold.   The preservation of the historic church building will require $33,000 in local funds, with an additional $67,000 being provided in matching grants.    A $5,000 contribution will “buy” one of the church’s unique nine-over-nine windows and entitle the donor to have an engraved plaque beside the window that acknowledges the gift, listing a name or organization.  For additional information, contact WCHS, P.O. Historical Society member Leroy Blair noted in his 2000 report, “The area where the Chism, Albron, Armon, John, H. and Pallie L. graves are located is not being cleaned like the remainder of the cemetery.  It is very overgrown.  I would estimate that there are 125 to 150 unmarked graves in the cemetery.”
