"Mystery graves" were here in 1870
This cemetery is located north of Bald Knob. To reach it, take Highway 167 north from Bald Knob approximately two miles, then turn left on Prince Cemetery Road. After seven-tenths of a mile, the road turns to the right. Follow the road on into the cemetery.
It was listed in April 2000 by Ray and Lois Etheridge of the White County Historical Society, who reported, “There are open gates and driveways to the left and right. Just inside the right gate, the graves are on the left; we began our survey there [call it Section 1] and, as much as possible, numbered rows from the drive to the next driveway, all along to the back. Most of the rocks that marked graves are gone; some were replaced with concrete blocks. Some funeral home markers cannot be read. There has been vandalism / stones broken, markers removed. Mrs. Pauline Higgins Stallings paid for and had fencing, gates and locks installed and vandals damaged them. The cemetery is old and if all of the graves could be found, it would probably be filled. We made a list of all the blocks, markers and stones as we found them but for this report we are including only those with names and information on them.”
The Etheridges, who are residents of Bald Knob, reported seeing five “mystery graves” which have rock walls but no identification. Three are covered with heavy rock slab tops. Barth Grayson, publisher of the White County Record and a member of the Prince Cemetery Committee, told Mr. and Mrs. Etheridge that his ancestors found the mystery graves already there when they arrived in 1870. The story, which came from Grayson’s Aunt Sindie Wilcox, indicated the rock walls and tops were built to protect the bodies from wild animals.
The “mystery graves” were the target of vandals in mid-September 2003. Sheriff’s deputies were called to investigate the removal of some of the rocks in at least one of the graves. “They dug some rocks out of the dirt that have been here for over 100 years,” Grayson said. “No one knows who is buried here.” After reading of the vandalism in the Searcy newspaper, archeologist Scott Akridge of Bradford drove to Prince Cemetery to assess the damage. “There are four or five rock graves and the vandals hit two of them,” he told the White County Historical Society. “I did not see evidence of digging. What I saw was rocks dislodged from their original position. They moved the top slab to the side first and then stoodin the center of thevault and pitched or slid stones out inseveral directions. Some of these stoneswere embedded in the ground and the vandals uprooted them, giving the appearance of digging. I saw no evidence of shovel work. The rocks could be put back in proper place if anyone has photos of the graves before the vandalism. Several strong persons could put the rocks back in their proper place. No mortar was used. The chain link fence at Prince has been vandalized in several places. This is very obvious in several places. It looks like someone deliberately ran over the support posts. I do not know if this was recent or old vandalism.” Akridge is a member of the historical society and former president of the Arkansas Archeological Society.
The Prince Cemetery Committee of 2000 included Rev. Robert Brumley, president; Pauline Stallings, vice president; Roberta Bufford, secretary; Roger Bufford, treasurer; Olivia Brumley, Marie Corbin and Barth Grayson.
[Although the list is alphabetized for convenience, Mr. and Mrs. Etheridge listed burials by sections and rows, to enable visitors to find specific gravesites. There are three sections. The numbers in parenthesis indicate the section and row; they started at the gate and worked the righthand area on the left to the back; this section is indicated by the prefix 1- followed by the row number. The second section started at the second gate to the right of the main entrance and worked by rows to the back. This second gate is indicated by the prefix 2- followed by the row number, as “Siler, Infant (2-1), died July 5, 1992.” The Etheridges then surveyed the newer section of the cemetery; this area is found on the right when entering the lefthand gate and a driveway circles around to across from the second gate. This third section is indicated by the prefix 3- followed by the row number, as “Corbit, Maudie (3-1) / 1905 / 1976”.]
When the cemetery list was updated December 5, 2000, by White County Historical Society member Leroy Blair, he was impressed with the Etheridges’ earlier effort. “I would like to compliment the Etheridges on their listing of this cemetery,” Blair wrote in his report. “It is the best job of listing I have found in White County of all the 60-plus cemeteries I have done so far. [Blair later surveyed more than 120 more graveyards.] We thank them for a good job.” Blair added eight names and other information to the Etheridge list. He noted an unusually large number of unmarked graves here and called Robert Brumley, president of the cemetery association, to ask if there was a list of those with unmarked graves. “He said there is not,” Blair reported, “and that he agreed with me that there are at least two times as many unmarked graves as marked. There are 353 marked graves. If we are right in our guess, there are more than 700 unmarked graves in this cemetery. The cemetery is fenced and clean.” Subsequent additions have been made to this list by the Historical Society based on published obituaries.
