John Oliver (1824-1888) donated some of the first land for this old cemetery bearing his name. The earliest recorded burial was that of 12 year-old Hannah Hammons in 1873. However, there are many unmarked graves in that area of the cemetery that could have been earlier. Jacob Alah Hammons (1822 - 1899) and John Oliver appear to be the oldest residents of the area when those first burials took place. The Hammons’ land was near the cemetery.
Located
in Section 31, Township 7 North, Range 10 West, Oliver Cemetery is on Cemetery
Road south of Mt. Vernon. From the intersection of state highways 64 and 5 at El
Paso, go north on Highway 5 for 5.1 miles. Turn west (left) on John Fowlkes Road
and travel approximately 1.5 miles to Cemetery Road, then turn right. Proceed to
a T at the corner of Bristol Road. Oliver Cemetery is visible from this point.
At the T Cemetery Road turns right and immediately makes a sharp left. The
driveway entrance is through a chain link fence on the left. There are cattle
pastured in the area and the gate must be closed immediately after coming and
going. The cemetery is still in excellent condition.
Originally listed for the White County Historical Society February 26, 1976, by Imogene Rowe and Cloie Presley, who described the cemetery as “very well kept,” this report was updated 24 years later by Susan Hammons of the cemetery association. Leroy Blair of the Historical Society updated it again after visiting the cemetery with his wife Ellen on June 27, 2001. Blair was unable to find the following marked graves from the earlier lists: Ida Mae Berry, Harry Blessing, Berthell N. Breeding, Jessie M. Brown, Helen Davis, Davis Infant (181), Vida Davis, Walter Kemper, Manning Infant (61), Arthur A. Millsap, Mary E. Millsap, Moarris (226), Myatt Infant, J.E. Myatt, Nolen Infant (247), Oakley Infant (70), William M. Rea and Ada Sanders. The list is now updated periodically by the association.
The chapel is locked but a phone call to Mrs. Hammons or any of the Trustees can have it opened for a family outing or other approved event. There is a pavilion for picnic shade. The bathroom facilities are of the outdoor type but are kept clean and useable. Phone numbers for all Trustees are listed on the chapel door.
