Mt. Bethel Cemetery

Rose Bud, Arkansas

This cemetery, originally known as Turnip Cemetery, is on Highway 36 about five miles east of Rose Bud, in Section 18, Township 8 North, Range 9 West. It was first listed in 1968 by Cloie and Leister Presley of the White County Historical Society. In 1999, Dale Thomas of Porterfield, CA, and other relatives of those buried in this cemetery collaborated to update some information. The following spring, Society volunteer Kathy Moss and her 14-year-old son Brandon added to the list, then Society member Leroy Blair added 19 names and other information after visiting the cemetery October 9, 2000.

"Brandon and I recorded information that was not included on the existing survey," Mrs. Moss reported. "The following includes our new information and the information already on file. You will notice that some of the names have row and plot numbers listed. These are the old plot numbers from the original survey and are not correct. For example, row 1 is actually row 4 now. I included them because they are helpful in locating some graves that do not have markers."

Thomas noted that "My mother, her brother and sister-in-law were able to give the maiden names of almost all the women in the cemetery. I’ve added the maiden name with ‘nee.’ My aunt and uncle went through the cemetery; they live about ¼ mile from it. They found some stones where none were listed on the list. Perhaps family added the stones after Mrs. Presley’s survey in 1968. I have added a few burials after 1968 that my mother had obituaries or funeral cards for. Mrs. Beatrice Carter supplied a map and list of names of persons buried there. The names that have no information are mostly unmarked graves that Mrs. Carter identified. The first recorded burial in the cemetery was that of Nancy Spurlin in 1906. The maiden names (nee) and other information were supplied by Iva Crockett Turner, Gladys Crockett Thomas, Lloyd Crockett (all natives of the Mt. Bethel area) and Wilma Cranford Crockett." The Mt. Bethel Free Will Baptist Church was organized here in August 1901 and located on the south side of Highway 36 near the old Turnip Cemtery. Years later, it was replaced by a new church which is located on the north side of the highway.

A history of the descendents of John and Mary Mooney Davis indicates there was at least one burial here much earlier than Nancy Spurlin in 1906. It also states that this site was known as "Turnip Cemetery" before it became Mt. Bethel. The community of Turnip was located just north of here and had a post office from 1888 to 1915. Rev. Dave Blakey of Pangburn wrote in the Davis history in 1970 that his grandmother Martha Davis Blakey, second wife of James Washington Blakey, "was buried near Rose Bud in what was then called ‘Turnip’ cemetery, later known as Mount Bethel." He stated that the grave had a temporary wooden marker, which has long since vanished. Family records indicate this was some time between 1875 and 1880, and that Martha died in her late 30s, giving birth to a daughter Alice M. Blakey. Rev. Blakey wrote that his father Charles Blakey pointed out Martha’s grave to him. A plot had been reserved for James W. Blakey beside her, according to Charles, but James W. Blakey remarried and when he died in 1913, he was buried at Naylor, Arkansas. Rev. Blakey, who was was pastor at Mountain Home Union Church at Pangburn. He died in 1986 at age 85. A copy of the Davis history was obtained by the White County Historical Society in July 2001 and placed in the Arkansas Room of the Searcy Public Library.

Leroy Blair added the following comments to his 2000 report: "There are six unreadable funeral home markers between the graves of Vernie Kelley and May Smith Sparrow. There is an unreadable funeral home marker next to Claude Johnson’s grave. There are two unreadable funeral home markers between the graves of the Townson babies and Easter McKinney. There are two unreadable funeral home markers between Hassell Hartsell and P.C. Mason. There are two concrete slabs with Bailey/Simmons on them, three concrete slabs with Bailey/Hubbard on them and one concrete slab with Bailey on it. These slabs are by the graves of George C. and Bessie V. Gray. This cemetery is very nice and clean." Blair was unable to find these graves which were on the original list: Allen infant, Fergerson infant, Pinkie Furgerson, Fletcher (7-75), Fletcher (7-76), Fletcher (7-77), Elsie Hartsell, Hassel Hartsell, Hartsell infant (4-29), Hartsell infant (4-28)Isabelle Hartsell, Ludlow Healy, Lankford infant, Grandma V.V. Spurlin, Teresa Stracener, Mrs. Townson, Belinda Troxell, Melenda Trosell, Webb, Willis infant, Jim Woody.
