This cemetery is located about six miles north of Judsonia off Highway 323. It was originally listed by Cloie and Leister Presley of the White County Historical Society March 22, 1975. Some additions were made in 1999 by the Society with the assistance of relatives of those buried here. The Fredonia records were updated by Historical Society member Leroy Blair after he visited the cemetery November 27 and 28, 2000. (See OLD SLAVE CEMETERY for related information.) Blair added more than 200 names and other information to the list. More recent burials were added by the Society annually based on published obituaries.Fredonia Cemetery is the final resting place for many of the earliest settlers of a community that was known as Stevens Creek and was later renamed Holly Grove. Persons interred here include early founders, judges, prominent citizens, businessmen, farmers, servicemen and other early members of the community. The site was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2007
Fredonia Cemetery has also been called Holly Grove Cemetery. The 1975 report was published as Stevens Creek Cemetery in the Historical Society’s White County Heritage that year. But in later years the Presleys changed the title of their report to Fredonia Cemetery. They reported in 1975 that the cemetery "is very well kept and there are a number of unmarked graves."
Following are Blair’s directions on how to find the cemetery: "From Judsonia take Highway 323 north to Highway 258. Turn right on 258 and go about 100 yards. Turn left on Stanley Road and follow it to Honeysuckle Road. Turn left and go about a tenth of a mile. Turn right on Fredonia Road to reach the cemetery." Blair was unable to find 58 graves that were on the original list. "Most of the missing were on aluminum markers," he reported. "The Presleys made a statement in their original report from March 22, 1975, that these aluminum markers would not last long. They were correct." Following are the 58 names he could not find: Elsie Arnold (BB49), Helen Ava Bandley (M107), Lee Barker (M116), Viola Barker (M120), Harold D. Blaylock (M172), Mary Blaylock (M174), Twin Blaylock (M175 and M176), Virgil Blaylock (M177), Jesse O. Bohley (M192), Boyd Bone (BB28), Ella Bone (M147), Maude Bone (M148), Roger Burton (BR13), Mary Cox (M339), Mary Alice Edwards (BB27), Lucy C. Fairless (M108), Opie E. Fisher (BR1), Horton (BR11), J.H. Jones (M400), Minnie Jones (M399), Thomas Henry Keeling (M249), Catherine King (M129), Nellie L. King (M128), Robert H. King (M130), Landis infant (M164), Leasure infant (M200), Golden Leonard (416), Manley (M359), Manley (M360), Manley (M371), Stella Ann Manley (M357), Martha McAdams (M247), McDougle infants (M64 and M65), Lizzie Molloy (M59), John Marvin Overstreet (M217), Suda Pendergrass (M318), Albert Wenzel Roushall (M110), Laura Smith (M58), Virgil Smith (M342), Charles F. Spence (M379), Fowler Spence, Eliza Sterling (M127), Leslie L. Stevenson (M250), Luther L. Stevenson (M251), Mary Stevenson (M252), Charles W. Thompson (M272), Flora Thompson (M271), Thompson infants (BR6 and M270), Richard L. Thompson (M269), Thomas Jefferson Turner (BR16), James L. Watson (BR14), Watson infant (BR15), Jason Wilcox (M242), Woodall (M98), Roy C. Wright (BR5), unknown (BR9).
Blair reported seeing more than 300 graves that were each marked with a small cement block that is even with the ground. There are no markings on them. Mrs. Katheryn Overstreet, who with her husband Clarence were the caretakers of this cemetery, told Blair that when the small aluminum markers were no longer good Clarence replaced them with the small cement markers to make mowing easier.
The Presleys’ original records were divided under these listings: "Below Road" … "Back behind the road" … "Main part of the cemetery." Each gravesite was numbered but the numbering system was not explained; perhaps in sequence by rows. The following lists indicate the area and original number in parenthesis / BR for Below Road, BSR for Below Second Road, BB for Back behind road, M for main part of cemetery.
The Fredonia Cemetery Association of the Holly Grove community is seeking donations to help maintain the cemetery. Checks may be made payable to Fredonia Cemetery Association and sent to secretary-treasurer Robert D. Shaver at 146 Opie Road, Bald Knob, AR 72010 or deposited in the account at Citizens State Bank in Bald Knob. For more information on the annual fund drive, Shaver may be contacted at 501 724-3930.
The graves of Gideon Bullock (right) and Moseley family members were moved to Fredonia from a nearby Civil War era cemetery. (See OLD SLAVE CEMETERY.)
If you have corrections or additions to this list or can provide other information on Fredonia Cemetery, contact the White County Historical Society, P.O. Box 537, Searcy, AR 72145.

F
redonia Cemetery is the first White County cemetery to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places, according to Robert and Cheryl Shaver, secretary/treasurer of the Fredonia Cemetery Association. The Shavers received notice of the listing from the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program recently. “It may be the oldest pioneer cemetery in White County, and we know it is the oldest White County pioneer cemetery listed on the National Register of Historic Places because it is the only one listed,” Cheryl Shaver said.F
redonia Cemetery’s upkeep is funded exclusively by donations. The inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places may make the cemetery eligible for some grants to fund restoration work of tombstones and of the old pavilion, she said. People on their mailing list should expect a letter notifying them of a meeting in March, when the Shavers will report on cemetery finances and on their plans for renovations and improvements.F
redonia Cemetery is all that remains of an early farming community, Stevens Creek, in Coldwell Township, which served as an early
trade center and post office for the surrounding area. The Grand Glaise-Searcy Stagecoach Road passed through Fredonia Cemetery
on its way to the Stevens Creek Post Office. The cemetery was named after the original community, and when the community later
changed its name to Holly Grove, the cemetery again took the name of the surrounding community. It was later named Fredonia
Cemetery because of its proximity to nearby Fredonia Masonic Lodge No. 229 and Fredonia Methodist Church, which was established
circa 1868. The first marked burial in the cemetery dates to 1869, although an 1839 abstract indicates that the land was already
in use as a cemetery at that time. Fredonia Cemetery could well be the oldest pioneer graveyard in White County, the Shavers
believe.
Coldwell Township in White County was one of the early settlements here; the county only had a population of 920 people by 1840.
Reuben Stephens was known to be in the Stevens Creek area by 1822, while the earliest reported settler in what would become the
town of Bald Knob did not arrive until 1829.
By 1850, the Stevens Creek Post Office Coldwell Township was located just southeast of Fredonia Cemetery. It predates a post
office in Bald Knob and continued to serve the fledging community until 1909. The William Crenshaw Gin and Grist Mill were
located on the north bank of Stevens Creek (north of Fredonia Cemetery), and the creek was used to run the mill in the early
years. Later, Crenshaw bought a steam engine to run it. The mill was gone by 1900.
White County Historical Society members have been on site and estimate there are 300 unmarked graves in Fredonia Cemetery. It is
the oldest one-acre section of the cemetery that has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places and that section is
closed to future burials, the Shavers said. There are 758 burials within the oldest one-acre section and Shaver estimates that
81 percent of those are historic burials. The newer section, known as the Fredonia Cemetery Wilma Moser Mobley Addition, will
continue to serve the burial needs of the community.
C
heryl Shaver is collecting stories from families of people buried at Fredonia Cemetery and plans to create a CD of those stories
to sell as a fundraiser. She urged families to contact her at 501 724-3930 with their family stories.
I
n the near future, a bronze marker citing the cemetery’s listing on the National Register of Historic places will be placed near
the entrance, off Stanley Road, along with a new rock entrance marker, she said. Restoration work on some of the older funeral
markers has already begun, and she plans a special commemoration for the veterans buried at Fredonia, which includes a veteran
of the Army of the Grand Republic and Civil War veterans.
S
haver has spent many hours researching the history of the cemetery and the lives of the people buried at Fredonia Cemetery.
Some of the biographies of early settlers and prominent members of the community included in the nomination to the National
Register of Historic Places are those of Gideon Freeman Bullock (1814-1869), Darlin C. Jones, who served in the Grand Army of the
Republic (1833-1912); Annie C. Overstreet (1812-1896); William DeBerry Overstreet (1850-1902); Clifton C. Overstreet (1891-1955);
Green Wright (1833-1913); Lillie Paralee Gordon Wright (1867-1940); James T. Roaseau (1854-1905); John Henry Scarborough
(1861-1915); Daniel Peake Mosley (1811- ?); Daisel Mosley (1900-1950); Perry Louks (1871-1946); Phillip Louks, a Civil War
veteran who served with Co. G, 9th Illinois Cavalry, (1837-1925); and Robert Green Sheffer (1844-1902).
S
haver said Fredonia Cemetery is the only remaining historical evidence of the early settlement of this once-thriving community.
Fredonia Methodist Church, schoolhouse and lodge burned in the 1930s, but markers of the men and women who populated the community
survive at Fredonia Cemetery to commemorate their lives and deaths. Many of these men were prosperous farmers, businessmen or
judges who were some of the earliest settlers of the county, as well as of the community. Several descendants of these families
still live in the Holly Grove community and many more live within White County.
