CHIPS FROM THE WOOD YARD
Adele Meacham of Judsonia married Boyce Wood in 1936 and spent 64 years in the community of Little Red, on the river in northern White County. Her education consisted of eight years at a one-room schoolhouse but she became a talented writer, and in her 60s began to write her memories of rural life in and around the communities of Steprock, Holly Springs, Joyner (now Sunnydale) and Little Red. Following her death on May 18, 2004, Adele's daughters Laquita Kent of Washington, DC, and Mariola Payne of Dover, AR, gathered up her writings and realized a broader audience might appreciate them. So they have published them in a book off the press just this month, entitled "Chips From the Wood Yard." Laquita and Mariola will bring Adele Wood's stories and new book to the White County Historical Society Monday, June 27, 7 p.m., at Harding Place. They will discuss their mother's life and present excerpts from the book. Bring a friend and join us for this unique look at the past. The book may be purchased by mail for $12 plus $2 postage from WCHS, P.O. Box 537, Searcy, AR 72145. Any profits will go to Philadelphia Cemetery at Sunnydale, where Adele and Boyce are buried.
