THE HART FAMILY OF WHITE COUNTY ARKANSAS)
The Hart family of White County Arkansas begins with Anthony Hart, Jr. who moved to the county from Tennessee in the late 1850s.
Anthony lived in Des Arc Township for about ten years, then, moved back to Tennessee where he died, but most of his family stayed in White County for several generations.
Anthony was the son of Anthony Hart, Sr. and Elizabeth, whose surname is unknown. Anthony Hart, Sr. was born in King and Queen County, VA in 1755. He owned a vast plantation in Halifax County, VA and the present city of South Boston, Virginia was built on part of his estate. He is mentioned in “The History of Halifax County, Virginia” by Wirt Johnson Carriton, published in 1824, pages 134-135. He was a veteran of the American Revolution and his application for a Revolutionary War Pension, file #S-5494 is filed in Halifix County, VA Court records. He served under General George Washington in the Battle of Brandywine among many other battles and skirmishes. He died in Halifax Co. VA in 1844.
Anthony Hart, Jr. and his family, along with some of the children of his deceased brother, Richard Hart, migrated westward from Halifax Co. Virginia to Haywood and Madison Counties in Tennessee between 1840 and 1850, probably shortly after the death of his father. By 1860 he had moved his family farther west to White County, Arkansas.

Vincent's father, Anthony, who was living in White Co. AR in 1860, had moved back to Tennessee and had died there in 1868. They are listed on the 1880 White Co. AR Census with James age 52, Sarah age 39, and Lily M. Sowell age 6, listed as a daughter. The record also lists her birthplace as AR, father born in England, mother born in GA. Obviously, Lily is an adopted daughter of James and Sarah.
Further proof of this can be found in the 1900 White Co. AR Census. They are listed on this Census with one child, a son named Marvin. According to the record they have been married 42 years and are the parents of one child. James is 72 years old, Sarah is 59 years old and their son, Marvin is 18 years old. This record could only mean that Sarah and James are the natural parents of only one child which is Marvin. What happened to Lily? In 1900 she would have been 26 years old, so was probably already married.
James is listed on the 1890 White Co. AR Tax Roll living in Gray Township, School District 36.
