Another Richmond In The Field.
In this issue appears the announcement of Mr. D. H. Lay, of Cadron township, as a candidate for the office of sheriff.
Mr. Lay served the people of this county as sheriff during the years 1866-7, and is no stranger to them. He will make a
vigorous canvass, and the probability is now that he will have one of the most hotly contested triangular races for this
office ever witnessed in the county. Lay, Poe and Thompson are all strong men.

To the Voters of Van Buren County: Fellow Citizens-Two years ago, unsolicited, I was a candidate before you as sheriff of your county. Now at the solicitation of many friends all over the county, I am again before you asking your support for the office of sheriff. I think I know the duties of the office to which I aspire, and feel that I have the qualifications to discharge them. I have been a citizen of your county for thirty-six years; I am fully identified with your every interest, indeed, your interest is my interest. Being a farmer, it will be impossible for me to visit you all until crop time is over. I thank you kindly for the generous support you gave me in the last election. Now, fellow citizens, my claims are before you, subject to your decision at the ballot box, on the fourth of September next. I am,
Very respectfully yours,
Zach Thompson

To the Voters of Van Buren County:
We, the undersigned citizens of Van Buren County, through no motive of self interest, hereby recommend T. L. Burris, of White Oak Township, who is an aspirant to the office of Assessor, as a worthy gentleman of pure motive and honest sentiments, well qualified to perform the functions of the office for which he is a candidate. We being personally acquainted with him and his condition, claim for him a preference right to this office - he being one of the worst of cripples. Should he be elected, we are fully confident he will well and truly perform the duties of his office.
