There is the possibility, of course, that he was taught by his mother and/or father, but there were two schools that had been established in White County before Andrew was born. In "The History of White County Tennessee" (1935; reprinted 2002) Rev. Monroe Seals discusses the early frontier schools of the area. The first school in White County was Priestly Academy in Sparta, TN, chartered in 1815 by the General Assembly. It had been in operation as early as 1809. He also discussed the Cumberland Institute, established in 1810, located 9 miles north of Sparta in the Cherry Creek Community. Cumberland Institute was a boarding school. ****************************************** Andrew and Mary Davis homsteaded at "Greasy Valley" in the Morganton area of Van Buren Co., AR. ****************************************** [Article in 05/15/1925 edition of Van Buren County Democrat] Davis Township was named in honor of Andrew B. Davis, who came here from Tennessee in 1848 in company of the late J. D. Martin and Ant and Smith Bradley. He died toward the end of the Civil War. Andrew B. Davis married Mary Witt. Three of their four boys survive; W. T. Davis, J. C. Davis, and A. B. Davis. [John A. Davis is not acknowledged as a brother of Billy, Ammon, Clint and Brad Davis although he was enumerated as a member of Mary's household in the 1870 and 1880 Censuses] More About ANDREW B. DAVIS: Burial: Hardin Cemetery, Bee Branch, Van Buren Co., AR Census 1: 1850, ARS5a433817 Census 2: 1860, AR126187057 Notes for MARY J. WITT: Mary was enumerated in both the 1870 and 1880 census for Van Buren County with her children following the death of Andrew in 1866. A headstone does not appear with Andrew's in the Hardin Cemetery; however, there is a footstone near Andrew's marker bearing her initials. Apparently, the Hardin Cemetery was vandalized a few years ago and her marker was probably destroyed then. Mary's sons, Ammon, James C., John A. and Brad (Anselem B.) and his wife "Permela" (= Parlee) were listed as living in her household in 1880. Ammon's occupation was listed as him being a teacher and James C. (20) was listed as being a farmer. By this time, William T. (Billie) and Newt Collum had both married. More About MARY J.
