Contacted by Ms. Martha Berlin, March
2019, regarding her maternal
grandmother,
Willie Emma's parents. Ms. Berlin presented me with a death certificate for Willie,
which identifies her parents as Morris D. Fennell & Sarah
"Sallie" Elizabeth Johns(ton)
Fennell. Several years ago, there was dispute about who they were & I
was told
the inscription on the tombstone was
incorrect. As of now, the death
certificate
and the tombstone inscription is enough
proof for me.
*Inscribed on Willie's
tombstone is the following:
'WILLIE EMMA HARRIS'
"Daughter of Morris D. And

* I have tried to fill in some dates
or provide more than the year if that was all that was given.
There are a set of books referred to
as the “Arkansas Death Indexes
1914-1950”.
A set of these books can be found in
most libraries & or genealogy societies here in Arkansas
&
they are also posted online at Ancestry.com, if you happen to have an
account there.
The books give the person’s name,
county they died in and the date.
Arkansas started keeping birth / death
statistics in 1914. Unfortunately, it
was not enforced
until the 1940’s.
It all depended on whether, a doctor,
the family, or a mortuary bothered to register the death
with the state and since many occurred
at home without a doctor in attendance, many went
unregistered.
If the cemetery you have an interest
in, does not have a sign(or a current one) giving
you names & or numbers you can
contact, I would make two suggestions.
One you can contact one of the funeral
homes in El Dorado, & if it is an
active cemetery (still being
maintained & or has people still being buried there,
often than can give you a name of who
you might contact. You can also
contact the Union County Genealogical
Society, located at the Barton Library,
200 East 5th Street, El
Dorado, AR 71730

genealogical society always
appreciate donations, when they are
able to help you.
