RUBY HERRICK SNIDER
7-18-1916 to 2-21-1999
*Ruby was born
in Donaldson, Arkansas to
Clarence & Alice Roberts Herrick
*Ruby &
her brother, Virgil spent their early years on a farm in
Hot Spring
County. Times were tough for Arkansas farmers
& Clarence
began peddling produce. In the mid 1920s, whe the oil
boom was at
it's peak in South Arkansas, Clarence saw an
opportunity. Folks working in the oil fields had to eat,
so he decided
his fortune laid in selling grocieries.
So, Clarence
packed up his family & moved to El Dorado.
Ruby's parents would divorce.
By 1930, her mother,
Alice had remarried to Theo Simpson, a carpenter
& contractor. Her brother,
Virgil had gotten an after
school job working for Western Union. Virgil would
bicycle all over El Dorado delivering telegrams.
This part-time job would end up being a life time
career for him. Their mother's
marriage to Theo
Simpson also began to flounder. Ruby married
Roy Snider. They became the
parents of three boys.
Among many accomplishments, Ruby recieved a 40
year service award in 1996 from the Ouachita
Literacy Council. For more than
30 years she was
a teacher of teachers for the Laubach method as she
conducted workshops in four states.
Roy had a stroke in 1991. He passed away on
April 7, 1997. By this time Ruby was suffering
from Alzheimer's Disease.....while her loved
ones watch the Ruby they loved and admired
cease to exist.
