GEORGE CHAPEL CEMETERY
est. 1840-1842:
This cemetery is located Northwest of
Strong, Arkansas; north from Strong on County Road 24 to
County Road 133 and go east
approximately 1 ½ miles. Cemetery is on
the South side of the road in the woods.
The information on these burials was
taken from Arkansas DAR cemetery survey records, Union County,
Arkansas. The survey was evidently done
about 1987, judging from the burial dates. It was graciously
shared with me from the files of Lillian
Craig of El Dorado, Arkansas 2003. Janice

*Update of status of George Chapel
Cemetery: February 17, 2007
The cemetery has been
cleaned up; all the trees removed so they will not come back; & a pipe
fence
with a gate installed. For those of you with an interest in this particular cemetery,
please contact
James Seymore at 870-310-8321 or 870-862-2504 Email
at jlseymore@sbcglobal.net
*Note: Mr. Seymore says
another tombstone was un-covered near the grave of Hosea George.
They think it may be Hosea's
daughter, but in it's present state they were unable to read it. (2007)
*Eureka!!! April 2012..........
Finally, the third time was
a charm! With the help of a
very nice man, Thomas
Garner, who we flagged down, I was finally able
to find this cemetery. Without him, I doubt we would have ever
found it.
He had just come out of the
woods on his little Kabota vehicle & he had
us follow him.
Unfortunately, the info I
was given back in 2007 about the removal of
the trees, so they would not
come back didn't work out.
Most of the tombstones are
obscured by young trees, lots of Sweet Gum
& pine, etc. Even the
very tall obelisk ( at least 12 to 18' tall) belonging
to Hosea George, was barely
visible. The granite sign was lying on
the ground.
There are no signs or markings
to tell you where to turn off the
dirt road. The area has a
lot of logging going on.
If you have a nice car, low
to the ground, I would not take it back there.
If you can find the spot to
turn off, you might want to consider walking in.
It is probably about
1,500-2,000 ft .back from the road.
There are young
sapling trees, mostly pine,
growing up in the road way. The road
has
been torn up by logging
trucks & erosion has made it pretty bad at the beginning.
The cemetery will be on the
left. Watch closely for the pipe fence, it too is
almost invisible because of
all the trees & shrubs covering the area.
*This photo of the gate and cemetery was taken back
around 2007
by Nora Poole Johnson.
These
photos were taken in April 2012.
