his father at age 14. He had to begin
working at a movie theater as a
projector operator to help support his younger sister.
*He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corp in
1958, serving proudly. After his
discharge, he returned to his hometown
& began working for the Rock Island
Railroad. In the early 60's, he moved to
Crossett & began a long career
with Ashley Drew & Northern Railway
Co., where he worked as an engineer,
trainmaster, & eventually the
Operational Superintendent. He remained
there
until AD & N closed in June of 1996.
& was the last one to lock the depot door
*A son, Gary Don Smith preceded him in
death.
*Sister, Marketa Smith Thurlkill (1936-2016)
*Member of Beech Street Baptist Church.
