John was born and raised in Fort Smith and was living with his grandmother when
he enlisted in the Marines 1 March 1967, at a recruiting office in Little Rock.
Upon arriving in Vietnam 25 March 1968, John was assigned to Kilo Company,
3rd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division. John was on a patrol
when the Marines were engaged by hostile forces. John died from gunshot wounds
to the body from hostile small arms fire, 5 kilometers south of Nui Dat Son (Hill 55)
in the Dodge City Area.
Survived by his grandmother, Katie White (she had legal custody) of him at
929 North 6th St, Fort Smith, AR and his mother; (his parents divorced in 1949) Christine Allison of
Women's Prison, Lansing, KS. His father; Milan M Rice of address unknown.
John's tour began April 25, 1968. He was a Rifleman. He
is buried at Fort Smith National Cemetery, Fort Smith, Sebastian County, Ar.
