Francis Theodore Verfurth 1916 - 1944
Francis Theodore Verfurth was born 22 Jan 1916 in Sebastian County, Ar.
to Frank H. & Anna Magdalene "Lena" Kruse Verfurth.
On May 25, 1938 Francis married Virginia Peak in Sebastian Co.
Francis enlisted in the Army Air Corps and served with the 390th Bomber Group,
Heavy, 570th Bomber Squadron as Navigator with the rank of 1st Lieutenant.
30 Nov 1944 1Lt Verfurth was on the crew of the B-17 #44-8080 "The Saint" during a mission to bomb the oil
plant at Merseburg, Germany. They were hit by flak over the target and had a mid-air
collision with another B-17, #42-97407. Both planes went down in a crash.
The entire crew of ten men was killed over Oberkotzau, Landkreis Hof, Bavaria (Bayern),
Germany as well as Six men on the other plane were killed also.
1st Lt Francis Theodore Verfurth is memorialized at Plot D Row 14 Grave 12,
Ardennes American Cemetery, Neupre, Belgium. This is an American Battle Monuments Commission location.
