Therman "Dutch" Earl Smith was born July 25, 1926 in Ozark, Arkansas to Arch Alvin & Burtie Mae Mitchell Smith. August 23, 1944 Dutch married Billie Ruth Barnes in Sebastian County, Ar.

July 25, 1944, while living at Huntington, Sebastian Co., Ar. Dutch registered for the military draft at the Sebastian Co. Ar. Courthouse. He enlisted in the US Army December 28, 1944 at Camp Josepth T. Robinson, Little Rock, Ar. He served until his discharge March 13, 1946. Nothing more is found about his time in the service.

Therman "Dutch" E. Smith, 82, of Greenwood died Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008, in a Fort Smith hospital. He was born to the late Arch and Burtie Smith on July 25, 1926, in Ozark. He was an Army veteran of World War II and retired from ABF Truck Lines. He also worked in the coal mines of Sebastian County and in the oil fields in Texas for T.A.W. He was a longtime cattle farmer and veterinarian assistant. He owned and operated a used tractor and farm equipment business in Greenwood and a used furniture store in Jenny Lind. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Greenwood and his passion in life was to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ. He was an exceptional cook, always willing to help anybody at a time of need and loved to tell stories about his family life growing up. He was preceded in death by one son, Dennis Ray Smith; and two brothers, Elmer Lee Smith and Alfred "Red" Smith.

Dutch is survived by his wife of 64 years, Billie Ruth Barnes Smith of the home; one daughter, Brenda A. Smith Castillow of Greenwood; two sons, Danny K. Smith of Huntington and Michael L. Smith of Abilene, Texas; four sisters, Dorothy Phillips of Rye Hill, Inis Taylor of Jenny Lind, Myrle Dean Kerr of Rye Hill and Margaret Cook of Rye Hill; three brothers, William A. Smith of Greenwood, Jim E. Smith of Mansfield and Marion Smith of Fayetteville; 10 grandchildren, Roy Jr., Brian and Steve Castillow, Jeff and Justin Smith, Julie Marrs, Michael Wayne, Bobby Joe, Danny Lee and Wendy Smith; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2008, at First Baptist Church in Greenwood with burial at Lovelace Cemetery under the direction of McConnell Funeral Home of Greenwood. Visitation will be today from 1 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home, where the family will visit with friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

Pallbearers will be Roy Jr. and Steve Castillow, Jeff and Justin Smith, Virgil Taylor and Troy Smith. Honorary pallbearers will be his brothers in Christ of First Baptist Church.
