William "Bill" Thomas Slater was born in Licking Co., Ohio Jan 22, 1921 to John & Alice Virginia Shriver Slater. Sometime between 1920 and 1928 the Slater family moved to Fort Smith, Sebastian Co., Ar.
Bill returned from the war in June 1944 still recuperating from his wounds. 22 Mar 1946 he married Burrell Lavelle Flitcher at Fort Smith, Ar.

Bill registered for the draft on Feb 16. 1942 at Fort Smith, Ar and he enlisted 9 Oct 1942 in Little Rock, Ar. Cpl William "Bill" Thomas Slater was attched to the 24th Infantry Division and served his time in South Pacific. The 25th Infantry Division is based at Schofield Barracks in Hawaii. The division, which was activated on 1 October 1941 in Hawaii, conducts military operations primarily in the Asia-Pacific region. Their specialty is Tropic or Jungle Warfare.

Nov 1944 Cpl. Slater was admitted to the hospital for wounds recived in the Line of Duty. His Hospital admission card states "Medical Diagnosis: First Location: Tibia, shaft; Causative Agent: Artillery Shell, Fragments, Afoot or unspecified. Medical Treatment: Fracture, compound, closed, treatment of, with splints or casts." He had served 2 years and 5 months. Cpl Slater was discharged from duty June 1944.

William T. Slater, born into eternal life Jan. 22, 1921, went to be with our Lord on Aug. 17, 2007, surrounded by his family in the comfort of his home. He was preceded by his precious wife of 61 years, Burrell Lavell Slater. He was also preceded in death by his mother, Alice Slater, and his four older sisters, Mary Edwards, Eva Snow, Gwyneth Hiatte and Fran Mausell, and his granddaughter, Robin Orendorff. He is survived by his children, Nancy Orendorff and husband Gary, Karen Sue Yusko and husband John, Deborah Tays and husband Jess, Bill Slater and Michael Slater. They were blessed with eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren and a very close sister-in-law, Cora Rice. He was a graduate of Fort Smith High School, where he excelled in athletics. He went to Fort Smith Junior College on a football scholarship.

He was drafted into the military in 1942 and served in the South Pacific with the 24th Infantry Division. He was a cutter at Harding Glass for 30 years and a sales representative for Dale Carnegie Training until his retirement at the age of 81 years. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. He was loved by everybody who knew him. He was a devoted father, husband, grandfather, uncle and friend.

Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2007, at Lewis Funeral Chapel in Fort Smith, officiated by the Rev. Charles Whedbee, the Rev. Russ Tyler and the Rev. Joe Silva, with interment with full military honors at the U.S. National Cemetery in Fort Smith.
