Vachel Roughley was born Novemeber 16, 1914 at Hartford, Sebastian Co., Ar. to Abraham & Naoma Bethell Roughley. Abraham was born in Upholland, Lancashire, England. Vachel married Doris Wilma Sandlin December 28. 1939 in Johnson Co., Arkansas.

Vachel registered for the military draft October 16, 1940 at Belle Point School in Fort Smith. He enlisted, October 31, 1942, in the US Army Air Corps. He states he has completed grammar school and his civil occupation is "Salesmen and sales agents, except to consumers". He served until August 28, 1945as Waist Gunner in the 303rd Bombardment Group His rank was Corporal.

Vachel Roughley passed away June 14, 1986 at Fort Smith, Arkansas and was buried in the National Cemetery there.
