Nolen Edward Renfrow

Nolen Edward Renfrow was born April 3, 1920 at Lavaca, Sebastian Co., Ar. to Sherman Lee & Beulah Lee Nolan Renfrow. December 25, 1940 he married Juanita Eddy from Fort Smith, Sebastian Co., Ar.

Nolen registered for the military draft July 1, 1941, He enlisted in the US Navy June 7, 1944 and served until January 26, 1946. Below is the front of a draft registration card but it was from after he had served. He was living in Sweet Home, Pulaski Co., Ar.

Nolen Edward Renfrow passed away December 16, 2007 at Siloam Springs, Benton Co., Ar. His burial was in Garden of Memories Cemetery at Charleston, Franklin Co., Ar.

Ralph Paul Smoot, 85, of Greenwood died Wednesday, June 17, 2009, in his home. He was a retired Army veteran of World War II.

Graveside service was held on Friday at U.S. National Cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of McConnell Funeral Home of Greenwood.

He is survived by his wife, Wilma; six daughters, Becky Moore, Linda Dunn and Diane Smoot, all of Greenwood, Judy Johnson of Huntington, Janie Wilhite of Muldrow and Ursula Boob of Germany; a son, Randy Smoot of Muldrow; 13 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

An anti-submarine net or anti-submarine boom is a boom placed across the mouth of a harbour or a strait for protection against submarines. Net laying ships would be used to place and remove the nets
In January 1945, the USS Butternut steamed from the Solomons via Humboldt Bay, New Guinea, to Leyte in the Philippines. She spent the ensuing two years engaged in net and other district craft operations in the waters adjacent to the islands of Leyte and Samar.
