On the 16 Sep 1944 Pfc Pitchford was killed in action in the vicinity of Atton, France. The Hospital Admission Card File states "Causative Agent: Artillery Shell, Other or Unspec to Blast, Fragments, Debris" He is buried at Plot C Row 15 Grave 42 Lorraine American Cemetery St. Avold, France.
