USS Talbot served with the Battle Force and the Submarine Force. In 1940 and 1941, the destroyer was based
at San Diego. Elwyn's rank A.S. on the muster records is Seaman Apprentice.

December 7, 1941 was the date Pearl Harbor was attacked.
The day after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Talbot got underway in the screen of Saratoga and
headed for Hawaii. She arrived at Pearl Harbor exactly a week after the Japanese raid, patrolled off
the islands for 10 days, and returned to San Diego. In February 1942, the ship joined the Patrol Force
of the 12th Naval District and escorted convoys along the Pacific coast.

USS North Carolina (BB-55) is the lead ship of the North Carolina class of fast battleships,
the first vessel of the type built for the United States Navy.
North Carolina was transferred to the Pacific to strengthen Allied forces during the Guadalcanal campaign.
There, she screened aircraft carriers engaged in the campaign and took part in the Battle of the Eastern
Solomons on 24-25 August 1942, where she shot down several Japanese aircraft. The next month, she was torpedoed
by a Japanese submarine but was not seriously damaged. After repairs, she returned to the campaign and
continued to screen carriers during the campaigns across the central Pacific in 1943 and 1944, including
the Gilberts and Marshall Islands and the Mariana and Palau Islands, where she saw action during the
Battle of the Philippine Sea.

USS Los Angeles (CA-135) was a Baltimore class heavy cruiser
launched on 20 August 1944, with Capt. John A. Snackenberg in command.
After shakedown out of Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, Los Angeles sailed on 15 October
for the Far East via the west coast and arrived at Shanghai, China, on 3 January 1946.
During the next year she operated with the 7th Fleet along the coast of China and
in the western Pacific to the Marianas.
