Henry Kuper Madden 1921 - 1944
Henry Kuper Madden was born August 10, 1920 in Fort Smith, Sebastian Co., Ar. to
William Aloysius & Gertrude Kuper Madden. Henry graduated from Fort Smith, High School.
Kuper enlisted with the US Army Air Force and was attached to THE 548th Bomber Squadron, 385th Bomber Group, Heavy.,
rising in Rank to 2LT.
On a mission to Wilhelmshaven on 3 Feb 1944, B-17G #42-39938 collided with another aircraft over the North Sea.
All wewre listed as Killed in Action (KIA). 2Lt Madden is listed as Co-Pilot.
2Lt. Madden's name is listed on the Tablets of the Missing, Cambridge American Cemetery. Cambridge, England.
The 385th Bomb Group, who took the nickname "Van's Valiants" after their first Commanding Officer Col.
Elliot Vandevanter, flew B-17s from Great Ashfield, Suffolk. The Group led the famous attack on the
Focke-Wolfe aircraft factory at Marienburg on 9 October 1943, during which only two out of one hundred
B-17s were lost and all of the buildings on the site were damaged or destroyed. They won two Distinguished
Unit Citations. The first, awarded to all 4th Bomb Wing Groups, was for accurately dropping their pay load
on an aircraft factory at Regensburg, on 17 August 1943.
