WWII Military Glider Planes

Henry Damon Izell was born May 29 1916 at Greenwood, Sebastian Co., Ar. to Charles Thomas & Myrtle Virginia Cumbie Izell. He married Mabel Beck Redfern May 17, 1939 in Fort Smith, Sebastian Co., Ar. where they both resided at that time.

Henry registered for the military draft October 16, 1940 at Belle Gtove School, Fort Smith, Sebastian Co., Ar. He served with Co. E, of 327th Glider Inf and Co. F 140th Infantry. His rank at his discharge date, October 14, 1945, was Pfc.

The 327th Glider Infantry Regiment, during WWII named the Bastogne Bulldogs, was a glider infantry regiment of the 101st Airborne Division of the U S Army. Glider infantry was a type of airborne infantry in which soldiers and their equipment were inserted into enemy-controlled territory via military glider. All too often gliders were destroyed during landing attempts, killing or injuring the crew and passengers.

Henry Damon Izell passed away 3 Feb 1947 at the young age of 30 years old. His burial was in the Fort Smith National Cemetery at Fort Smith, Arkansas.
