Jan 10, 1943 Louis enlisted in the US Army Air Corp in Little Rock, Arkansas. Louis had finished 1 year of high school and was a routeman. Cpl Louis J Garr was attached to the 744th Bomber Squadron, 456th Bomber Group, Heavy.

Cpl. Garr served as a Top Turret Gunner on B-24G #42-78319, 744th Bomber Squadron, 456th Bomber Group, Heavy. On 7 Oct 1944 B-24G #42-78319 took off from Stornara, Italy on a bombing mission to bomb the oil depot in Vienna, Austria. Shortly after bombs away they were hit by German flak near the bomb bay doors causing engine damage and fuel leaks. The crew were given the order to bailout over the island of Vis.
