Joe Davis 1922-1983
Joe Davis was born Dec 4, 1922 at Lavaca, Sebastian Co., Ar. to
Asa Adolphus & Nancy Katherine Smith Davis. April 3, 1948 Joe
married Betty Jo Tilton, both residents of Fort Smith, Sebastian Co., Ar.
Joe enlisted in the Army Air Corps November 7, 1942 in Little Rock, Ar. He
states he's a "Semiskilled welders and flame" and he had finished 4 years of high
school. S/Sgt Joe Davis was listed as a POW Dec 13, 1944 according to
the War Department.
Following is shared by Donna Ewing.
"He served with the 486th Bomb Group/835th Bomb Squadron. Waist Gunner on a B17G
on mission to Hamburg August 4, 1944. Shot down by flak, the aircraft turned
over and went down, crashing near Wesermunde, Germany. Missing Air Crew Report:
MACR 7712. It was his 24th mission. He was liberated on April 26, 1945.
I don’t know a lot about the Luft Stalags he was in as they moved him around
a lot. He was on forced marches while the Germans were trying to stay ahead
of the Russians."
His service discharge date was Oct. 12, 1945.
T/Sgt Joe Davis passed away September 17, 1983 and
is buried at the National Cemetery at Fort Smith, Ar.
