James Raymond registered for the draft June 30, 1942 in Tiptop, Tazewell, Virginia where his dad was employed. His enlistment record from 1 Dec 1942 at Abingdon, Virginia states he was born in Arkansas and had completed 3 years of high school. His current residence at that time was Sussex County, Virginia. Pvt James R. Cunningham was assigned to the 406 Inf 102 Inf Div and soon became a PFC. His hospital admission card from Nov. 1944 gives very little information except he died in the line of duty. James Raymond Cunningham died at age 22 on Nov 17, 1944 and on Nov 5. 1948 was laid to rest at his final resting place at the National Cemetery, Fort Smith, Sebastian Co., Ar.
