George W. Carter
1913-2007


George W. Carder was born May 8, 1913 in San Joaquin Co., California to William Amos & Bettie Ann "Lizzie" Collins Carter. On 16 January 1936 George married Lucy A. Sisk at Fort Smith, Arkansas where they both lived at that time.

October 31, 1942 George enlisted in the Army Air Corps at Little Rock, Arkansas. On his enlistment paper he states he has 4 years of high school and his civil occupation was "skilled mechanics and repairman."

In April 1945 George. according to a Hospital Admittance Card from Alamogordo Bombing Range, New Mexico, was diagnosed with Meningitis. In May 1945 he was returned to service from the Station Hospital.

(In response to the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941, the U.S. military established a permanent presence in the Tularosa Basin during World War II creating the Alamogordo Bombing and Gunnery Range and White Sands Proving Grounds, known today as Holloman Air Force Base, and White Sands Proving Grounds, now White Sands Missile Range. It was at White Sands Missile Range that some of the German scientists, including Werner Von Braun, who were instrumental in the conception and development of the V-2 rocket, relocated after World War II.)

George W. Carter passed away in Fort Smith, Sebastian Co., Ar. December 12, 2007 and was buried in Forest Park Cemetery in Fort Smith.

George W. Carter, 94, of Fort Smith, died December 12, 2007 in Fort Smith. He was a retired salesman for Berry Dry Goods, a member of the American Legion, Post 31, a Veteran of the Arkansas National Guard serving from 1939-1941 and the United States Air Force serving during World War II from 1942-1946 where he received the American Theater Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, and the World War II Victory Ribbon. Following retirement from Berry Dry Goods he worked for, and retired from, Ace Hardware. He was a member of South Side Baptist Church, was an avid golfer and enjoyed traveling.

He is survived by his sister Marie Watkins of Fort Smith; nieces and nephews, Eric and Laurah Watkins, Sheryl Hughes, Sarah Watkins, Averi Watkins, William Watkins, and Nancy Gibson all of Fort Smith. He was preceded in death by his wife Lucy Carter.

Funeral service will be Monday, December 17, 2007 at 10:00 AM in the Edwards Funeral Home Chapel with burial to follow in Forest Park Cemetery all under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home.
