John N. Canada
1926-2009


John Nolen Canada was born May 30, 1926 in Center Township, Sebastian Co., Ar. to Henry Robert & Esther Adline Akin Canada. John married Evelyn Eileen Woods and her obituary says she was a Navy veteran. A date has not been found for the marriage.

John enlisted in the US Marine Corps January 14, 1944 and served until November 28, 1946. The US Marine Corps Casualty Index show John was wounded in action. The military unit was 24 Repldraft, 4th Marine Div Fmf.

In late January 1945, the 24th Marines embarked for the Japanese stronghold, landing on 19 February, with other 4th Marine Division units. A Co 24th replacement draft was attached to A Co 133rd Naval Construction Battalion as shore party to 1/23 on beach yellow 1 for the landing D-day.

John Nolen Canada passed away February 17, 2009 and was buried in the Fort Smith National Cemetery in Fort Smith, Sebastian Co., Ar.

GREENWOOD - John Canada, 82, of Greenwood died Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2009, in Greenwood. He was a retired teacher and coach, attended Greenwood Freewill Baptist Church and was a Marine Corps veteran of World War II.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Friday at U.S. National Cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of McConnell Funeral Home of Greenwood.
