Byford Brown was born 29 Jun 1919 at Crawford Co., Ar to William Riley & Alice Johnson Brown. PFC Brown married Gladys M. Yeakley in Crawford Co., Ar 11 Mar 1939.

Byford registered for the military draft October 16, 1940 at Parker School in Fort Smith, Sebastian Co., Ar. He enlisted on 16 Sep 1944 in the US Army at Camp Josepth T Robinson in Little Rock, Arkansas. He states his Occupation was skilled general woodworking. On June 4, 1945 Pfc Brown was killed in action at Okinawa, Japan. He was buried in the Alma City Cemetery, Alma, Ar.

The Battle of Okinawa codenamed Operation Iceberg,was a major battle of the Pacific War fought on the island of Okinawa by United States Army and United States Marine Corps (USMC) forces against the Imperial Japanese Army. The initial invasion of Okinawa on 1 April 1945 was the largest amphibious assault in the Pacific Theater of World War II. The Kerama Islands surrounding Okinawa were preemptively captured on 26 March, by the 77th Infantry Division. The 82-day battle lasted from 1 April until 22 June 1945.
