He grew up as one of the "Bailey Hill Boys", a group of neighborhood kids who took the name from a hill in the area. A graduate of Fort Smith Arkansas High School, Johnny often talked about serving his country while a teenager. He arrived in Korea in September of 1950 as a member of the Army's 57th Field Artillery Battalion (105MM)HQ BTRY, 7th Infantry Division, and died November 28 in the line of duty during the Battle of Chosin Reservoir. He was 18 years of age. His remains were found in 2004 and positively identified with family DNA in 2009. He was buried on August 28, 2009, in his home state. Johnny was awarded the Purple Heart, Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. He is survived by one sister, Alice Baker of Fort Smith; one brother, Jerry C. Mayberry of Fort Smith and several nieces and nephews.
