Vanderburg Grocery
Submitted by Cleta Terrell

The grocery store was built by my great grandfather Columbus "Lum" Vanderburg for his daughter Laura Vanderburg Campbell to operate for the support of her two young daughters and herself following the death of her husband Albert Campbell in 1915. The store was located on Towson Avenue, on the land where Phoenix Village has been located since the early 1960s. Columbus owned the entire block of land, bounded by Towson, Phoenix (was known as Vanderburg street at one time), Wheeler and Louisville. Their home was the house just to the right of the store.
People in the picture are: Lula (Garrett) Vanderburg, Columbus "Lum" Vanderburg, their granddaughter Blannie Beaty, her mother, Maude (Vanderburg) Beaty and a Mr. Hale who sometimes worked for them.
