Dr. Francis Marion Savage
1832-1908



Dr. Francis Marion Savage was born in Illinois on June 1, 1832 and died at Hartshorne, Pittsburg Co., Oklahoma. Dr. Savage was the son of Moses Penn and Sarah W. Lee Savage In 1850 he is living with his parents and siblings in Platt County, Illnois. Dr. Savage was the second child and was born in Ohio as were the children younger than him. One older brother and the parents were born in Virginia. On Dec 13,, 1855 Dr Savage married Catharine M. Nevel in Platt county Illinois.

During the Civil War Dr. Savage served with Co. E, 28th Illinois Infantry.

Dr. F. M. Savage, one of the oldest and most respected citizens of Hartshorne, died at his residence there early Sunday morning and was buried that afternoon. Dr. Savage had been in failing health for over a year and his death had been expected or several weeks. Dr. Savage was born in Illinois June 1, 1833, and lived there until some years after the Civil War. He enlisted early in the Union Army and fought loyally through the war. In the early 70's he moved to Hackett City, Ark., and about 1890 came to Hartshorne, where he as since resided. Dr. Savage was twice postmaster of his city, his last term having expired in December, but his successor not qualifying until the last of October. Dr. Savage had also served as one of the pension examiners in the Central district. He had also served as post commander of the Hartshorne GAR Post.

He was a neighbor of Abraham Lincoln during early manhood and later held posts under him. He was one of the first physicians in Pittsburg County. He served on the board of pharmacy in territory days. Father of Mrs. Jennie Stevens of Ft. Smith, Mrs. Myrtle Fling of Oklahoma City, W. V. and John P. Savage of Hartshorne.
