Note: Augusta Ann Smith was the widow of Joseph A.J. Smith. Her maiden name was
Holbird. She was a daughter of James Jerome and Elizabeth O'Neal Holbird.
PROOF OF PROPERTY

On this day personally came before the undersigned, a Justice of the Peace within and
for the County of Scott and State of Ark, the undersigned two citizens of Scott Co.,
Ark., whom I certify to be creditable persons and worthy of confidence, who being duly
sworn, state that they are each, personally, well acquainted with applicant Augusta
Ann Smith, widow of Joseph A.J. Smith, deceased, and have known her for 9 years,
respectively.
That she is now and has been for the past twelve months a bona fide resident of
Arkansas. That she is incapacitated for manual labor by reason of old age, and poor
health and that such incapacity (or disability) is not the result of his own vicious
habits still persisted in. That to the best of our knowledge, all property now owned
by him and his wife, together, is not worth exceeding $400 (exclusive of household goods
and wearing apparel.) That neither he nor his wife is in receipt of any income, annuity,
pension or wages for any services, or the emoluments of an office, in excess of $150 per
year. That we have no interest in this claim.

WIDOW'S APPLICATION FOR PENSION - #4968

Augusta A. Smith do solemnly swear that I am the widow of Joseph Andrew Jackson Smith who
served as a soldier in the army of the Confederate States, being a member of Capt. S. Peirce (?)
& Loving's (?) - Company B in Col. Waterhouse's Regiment and Walking (Walkers) Brigade Infantry Vols.
from the state of Texas; that he was honorable discharged (paroled or released) from such service at
the close of the war on or about the spring of the year A.D. 1865, and did not desert the same; that
I am now, and for the past twelve months have been, a bona fide resident of this State; that I do not
own property, real or personal, or both, or money or choses in action, in excess of the value of $400.00
(exclusive of household goods and wearing apparel), nor have I conveyed title to any property to enable
me to draw a pension, and that I am not in receipt of any income, annuity, pension or wages for any
services, the emoluments of an office, in excess of $150.00 per year; that my said husband died after
the close of the war on the 12th day of February, 1869, a tree falling on him and resulting in his death,
and that I have not since remarried, so help me God.

PROOF OF SERVICE FOR WIDOW

On this day personally came before the undersigned, a Justice of the Peace within and for the County of
Scott and State of Arkansas, James J. Holbird, a citizen of Gate, Scott Co., Ark., whom I certify to be
a creditable person and worthy of confidence, who being duly sworn, states: That he was personally, well
acquainted with applicant's husband Joseph Andrew Jackson Smith and knew him for years prior to his death
which occurred about Feb. 12, 1869. That he was a Confederate soldier. Belonging to Company B as well as
I remember in Walkers Inf. Col. Waterhouse Reg. & Roberts Brigade, Texas Infantry Vols: That as such soldier
he served from March 8th, 1862 to the close of the war in Spring of 1865. That he was honorable discharged
(paroled or released) from such service and did not desert the same. That he is now dead and that his widow
has been for the past twelve months a bona fide resident of Arkansas. That to the best of my knowledge, all
property now owned by his widow is not worth exceeding $400 (exclusive of household goods and wearing apparel).
That his widow is not in receipt of any income, annuity, pension or wages for any services, or the emoluments of
an office, in excess of $150 per year, and that she has not since remarried. That I have no interest in this claim.

acquainted with applicant Augusta A. Smith, widow of Joseph A.J. Smith, deceased, and have known her for 60 & 38
years, respectively.
That said widow is now and has been for the past twelve months a bona fide resident of Arkansas. That she is

We, the undersigned, sitting as a Pension Board for Scott County, do certify that we have examined the application
of the within named Augusta A. Smith for pension, under Act of the General Assembly of the State of Arkansas, as
approved March 11, 1901, and the proof in support of same, and find that said applicant is the widow of a
Confederate soldier, is in indigent circumstances, and that her claim is just, and that she should be allowed
$50.00 pension.
