MT. MORIAH COMMUNITY CHURCH
Present-day Mt. Moriah Church is located in Dutch Creek Valley on Highway 80 about 15 miles east of Waldron. The current building has been in this location since about 1969. My grandmother told me that the last funeral service preached in the previous church was my grandfather's (Oscar Hale), and he died in March 1969. Present ministers are the Reverend David and Mrs. Hinds.
Previous to 1969, the building was a white, clap-board structure built on columns of rocks. You entered through a vestibule into one large room. After an introductory session of greeting and singing hymns, everyone would split in various Sunday School classes and spread out to areas around this room. Mildred Wagner taught the adults for many years; my grandmother, Dollie Hale, was the church secretary and ordered all the church literature and gave a treasury report each Sunday before worship service; my grandfather, Oscar Hale, always sang in the choir as well as my great aunt, Mervie Bayrd Hale; Bessie Wade Hale was the Sunday School teacher for many years of the grade school children. Each year during the summer, Vacation Bible School would take place as is the custom of many churches. Contributed by Barbara Hale Reynolds. Photo contributed by Charlene Holland.
