WILLIAM EDGAR SMITH McCLAIN HOUSE

This is the house that my Mother Neva Lee and her younger Sister Viva Dee Garrett lived in while they attended the 7th and 8th grade in Mansfield in 1911. They are in the school picture posted also on this site. Their Mother and Father were both deceased and they were being raised by their father's Sister Laura Garrett McClain. Laura was married to William Edgar Smith McClain and Uncle Smith built this house up on the ridge above downtown Mansfield. As you can see the house hung over the edge of the ridge and Uncle Smith stored apples back up under the house, it was so far off the ground that you could walk upright most of the way under the house.
