CERTIFICATE OF CONFEDERATE PENSIONER
I, W.A. Bates, Guardian of Sarah J. Malone, a resident of the County and State aforesaid, do solemnly swear that I clearly and fully understand the questions above
set forth and that I have truthfully and to the best of my knowledge and ability given the answers set opposite each question.

TO THE HONORABLE MEMBERS OF THE STATE CONFEDERATE
PENSION BOARD
I, W.A. Bates, of Waldron, Scott County, Arkansas, after being first duly sworn states that I am 62 years of age, and have lived in Scott County, Arkansas, all my life,
and have known the pensioner Sarah J. Malone and her husband Free Malone Sr., all my life.
The said Free Malone Sr., was a Confederate Pensioner on the pension roll of Scott County, Arkansas, and he and his wife have lived in Waldron, Arkansas every [sic] since
I can remember. At the time of the death of Free Malone Sr., about April 24th, 1926, and thereafter his pension was allowed to Sarah J. Malone his widow, who had lived with
him continuously all those years in Scott County, Arkansas.
That the property of said Sarah J. Malone at death of her said husband consisted of an Old Wooden Hotel and Lot in Waldron, Arkansas, upon which they had lived and occupied
as Homestead for many years, and that about April 3rd, 1926, Sarah J. Malone deeded said property to her children, namely, Mrs. Lena Bates, Little Rock, Arkansas, Mrs. Ora
Hamilton of Kansas City, Mo. Mrs. Ione Maxwell, Holland, of Los Angeles, Cal. Mrs. Cora Rogers of Concord N.H. Free Malone Jr., Heavener, Oklahoma, Otto Malone, Oil City,
Kansas and Ben H. Johnston a grand son of Little Rock, Arkansas, which deed is recorded in Book 50 pages 238 and 239 Scott County, Arkansas. Which deed reserves to the Grantor
the use and benefits of said premises during her natural life time. This with some personal property house hold goods and money was all she had.
That about December 3rd, 1928, Sarah J. Malone was adjudged incompetent, and was entered in the Vaile Sanitarium at Independence, Missouri for care and treatment, and that
W.A. Bates the affiant herein was duly appointed guardian for said Sarah J. Malone and her estate by the Probate Court of Scott County, Arkansas and is now the duly appointed
qualified and acting Guardian of said estate.
That as such guardian he rented the said Hotel for the sum of $75.00 per month, but that the tenants have been falling behind with their rents for the reason business is so
dull it will not pay the rents contracted, and the Estate is behind with insurance premiums and the rents received will not pay for the care and treatment of the said Sarah J.
Malone, and pay the taxes and insurance on the Hotel and Lot. That she has no personal estate except about the value of $400.00, and she is in need of her pension to pay for
her care and treatment at said Sanitarium, as she is an invalid now about 86 or 88 years of age, confined to her room and bed most of the time is the reports I have from the
Sanitarium, and requires the attention of a nurse, and some times a Doctor to treat her.
That she has no income except the rents from the use of said Hotel and that is insufficient to pay her care, treatment and expenses much less the taxes and Insurance on the
building, and the property is in need of repairs that her estate is not able to make from the rents of the same.
WHEREFORE, said Guardian prays the Honorable State Pension Board to re-instate her pension.
Respectfully Submitted,
(Signed) W.A. Bates
