TRANSCRIBER'S NOTE: James A. Jones, 29 October 1837 - 10 April 1914, is buried at Cedar Grove Cemetery at Boothe, Scott County, Arkansas. Although he drew his pension from Sebastian County, he lived for some time in Scott County.

APPLICATION FOR PENSION

To the Honorable County Court of Columbia County,
Sitting as a Pension Board:
The undersigned, as an ex-Confederate soldier, hereby applies for a pension under the provisions of an act of the General Assembly of the State of Arkansas, entitled "An Act for the relief of Certain Soldiers of the late War between the States," approved April 1, 1891, upon the following grounds:

That he is a bona fide citizen of the State of Arkansas and has resided within the bounds of this State for more than twelve months next before the filing of this application;

That he enlisted as a soldier in the State of Ark. during the war between the States in Company G of the 3rd Regiment of Arkansas Infantry.

That while in the discharge of his duty as a soldier of said company and regiment in the service of the Confederate State of America, he received a wound in the right ankle joint. Fracturing the right Os Calcis(?)

That by reason of said wound and disability he is now indigent and incapacitated for manual labor;

That he is not receiving any aid from this State or from the United States, for such injuries, under any other statute, and that therefore he makes application for relief under the act aforesaid.

Jones under Acts April 1st 1891 and the proof in support of same and find that said applicant is a wounded Confederate soldier, is in indigent circumstances and wholly or partially incapacitated for manual labor and that his claim is just and that he should be allowed a pension.

I, J.A. Jones do solemnly swear that I served as a soldier in the army of the Confederate States, being a member of Third Regiment of Inft. from the State of Ark. called [blank]; that I was honorably discharged from such service on or about April 5th 1865 and did not desert the same; that I am now and for the past twelve months have been, a bona fide resident of this State; that I do not myself, nor does my wife, nor do we both together, own property, real or personal, or both, or money or choses in action in excess of the value of $400.00 (exclusive of household goods and wearing apparel), nor has either of us conveyed title to any property to enable me to draw a pension, and that neither I nor my wife is in receipt of any income, annuity, pension or wages for any services, the emoluments of an office in excess of $150.00 per year; that I am partially incapacitated to perform manual labor in any of the ordinary avocations of life and that such incapacity (or disability) is the result of wounds received in the service, being wound in ankle and chronic sore shin and general disability or of age, accident or disease, and that such disability is not the result of my own vicious habits still persisted in, so help me God.

I, W.W. Brown, a duly registered and practicing physician in Sebastian County, Arkansas, do hereby certify that I am well acquainted with J.A. Jones of Sebastian Co. Arkansas, who is an applicant for a pension under the Statutes of Arkansas.

That at his request I have made an examination of his physical condition and find:
State description and character of wound in right ankle and has a chronic ulcer in lower third of Right shin.

Physical condition and to what cause is his incapacity for manual labor attributable
To wound in right ankle and chronic ulcer on right shin and old age and that said disability is not the result of his own vicious habits still persisted in
Has no bad habits
Extent of disability two thirds

On this day personally came before the undersigned, a Notary Public within and for the Central District, J.F. Lowery, citizen of the United States, whom I certify to be [a] creditable person and worthy of confidence, who being duly sworn state that they are each personally well acquainted with applicant, J.A. Jones and have known him forty years, respectively.

That he was a Confederate soldier. Belonging to G Regiment of 3rd Ark. Inf. That as such soldier he served from 1861 to 1865. That he was honorably discharged (paroled or released) from such service, and did not desert the same. That he is now and has been for the last twelve months a bona fide resident of Arkansas. That he is incapacitated for manual labor by reason of Wound and that such incapacity (or disability) is not the result of his own vicious habits still persisted in. That to the best of our knowledge, all property owned by him and his wife, together, is not worth exceeding $400 (exclusive of household goods and wearing apparel). That neither he nor his wife is in receipt of any income, annuity, pension or wages for any services, or the emoluments of an office, in excess of $150 per year. That we have no interest in this claim.

I, B.B. Walker & W.H. Smith, a duly registered and practicing physician in Scott County, Arkansas do hereby certify that I am personally well acquainted with J.A. Jones of Boothe, Arkansas who is an applicant for a pension under the Statutes of Arkansas.

That at his request we have made an examination of his physical condition and find:
State description and character of wound: that applicant has received a gun shot wound through ankle joint causing varicoes vains which resulted in a cronic ulcer and a deformity of the foot

Physical condition and to what cause is his incapacity for manual labor attributable
That the applicant has catarrh [several words obscured by crease in paper] Bronchial Tubes also general disability due to old age Senile Bronchitus

and that said disability is not the result of his own vicious habits still persisted in
that the applicant is a Moral Man that his disability is not due to vicious habits that if such was the case we would likely know it.

Extent of disability
After an examination of applicant we attribute total disability in his case.

APPLICATION FOR INCREASE OF PENSION

STATE OF ARKANSAS,
County of Scott

I, J.A. Jones do solemnly swear that I am now, and for the past twelve months have been, a bona fide resident of this State; that I am now drawing a pension as an ex-Confederate soldier, under an Act of the General Assembly of 1901, having made my original application from the County of Sebastian; that I am still in indigent circumstances; that I do not myself, nor does my wife, nor do we both together, own property, real or personal, or both, or money or choses in action in excess of $400.00 (exclusive of household goods and wearing apparel), nor has either of us conveyed title to any property to enable me to draw a pension, and that neither I nor my wife is in receipt of any income, annuity, pension or wages for any services, the emoluments of an office, in excess of $150.00 per year; that I am incapacitated to perform manual labor in any of the ordinary avocations of life; that my disability has increased, and I am less able to perform manual labor than when my original application was made, by reason of increased age and disability. I am 70 years of age
and I hereby make application for an increase of pension, under Act of the General Assembly of 1907.

I, E.S.T. Campbell a duly registered and practicing physician in Scott County, Arkansas, do hereby certify that I am personally well acquainted with J.A. Jones of Hon, Scott Co., Arkansas, who is an applicant for an increase of pension under the Statutes of Arkansas.

That at his request I have made an examination of his physical condition and find:
State description and character of wound
Gun shot wound in right ankle. Chronic ulcer on right leg and chronic Bronchitis.

Physical condition and to what cause is his incapacity for manual labor attributable
He is feeble owing to advanced age (70 years) and is unable to perform but very little manual labor owing to the above mentioned causes
and that said disability is not the result of his own vicious habits still persisted in
He is a man of good habits.

Extent of disability
9/10 as compared to an able bodied man.

I, Mary J. Jones do solemnly swear that I was born the 4th day of September 1846 and that I am the widow of James A. Jones, who served as a soldier in the army (or sailor in the navy) of the Confederate States, his proof of service being now on file in the Auditor's Office, at Little Rock, he having been allowed a pension under Act of the General Assembly, approved March 11, 1901, while a resident of Sebastian County, Arkansas, that I am now, and for the past twelve months have been a bona fide resident of this State; that I do not own property, real or personal, or both, or money or choses in action, in excess of the value of $400.00 (exclusive of household goods and wearing apparel), nor have I conveyed title to any property to enable me to draw a pension, and that I am not in receipt of any income, annuity, pension or wages for any services, the emoluments of an office, in excess of $150.00 per year; that my husband died on the 10th day of April 1914 and that I have not since remarried, so help me God.
