APPLICATION FOR PENSION

STATE OF ARKANSAS}
County of Scott}
I, Willis Elwood do solemnly swear that I served as a soldier in the army of the Confederate States, being a member of Co. "B" 17th Regiment of Infty. Vols. from the State of Arkansas; that I was honorably paroled from such service on or about the close of the war in the spring of 1865 and did not desert the same; that I am now, and for the past twelve months have been, a bona fide resident of this State; that I do not myself, nor does my wife, nor do we both together, own property, real or personal, or both, or money or choses in action in excess of the value of $400.00 (exclusive of household goods and wearing apparel), nor has either of us conveyed title to any property to enable me to draw a pension, and that neither I nor my wife is in receipt of any income, annuity, pension or wages for any services, the emoluments of an office, in excess of $150.00 per year; that I am incapacitated to perform manual labor in any of the ordinary avocations of life and am partially blind and that such incapacity (or disability) is the result of neuralgia in eyes while in service which injured my eyes and my eyes have never been good since, and sometimes now I can scarcely see anything - and lameness and injury to feet caused by working in hot sand during my service in army as I believe, and my feet have given me pain and suffering ever since the war to the present time & at times I can scarcely walk and am unable to do any kind of work except a little hoeing and from advanced age my age now being about 60 years as well as I remember, and general debility and that such disability is not the result of my own vicious habits still persisted in, so help me God.

We, the undersigned, sitting as a Pension Board for Scott County, do certify that we have examined the application of the within named Willis Elwood for pension, under Act of the General Assembly of the State of Arkansas, as approved March 11, 1901, and the proof in support of same, and find that said applicant is a diseased and disabled Confederate soldier, is in indigent circumstances, and wholly incapacitated for manual labor, and that his claim is just, and that he should be allowed $100.00 pension.

My name is Willis Elwood. I am 60 years old. I live at Bates, Arkansas. I joined the Confederate Army at Gum Springs, 5 miles from Ft. Smith in 1862, Company B - 17th Ark. and served constantly until the close of the War. Was paroled at Jackson, Miss. in 1865. I am now unable [to] work at manual or physical labor, am very near blind, and do not own real estate or personal property at all, am entirely dependent on my daughter Mrs. Golden who lives at Bates, Ark.

My name is J.E. Johnson. I am 53 years old. I live at Bates, Arkansas. I am acquainted with Willis Elwood, have known him since the year of 1860. he (Willis Elwood) was said to have joined the army joined the army Rebble Army at or near Ft. Smith Sebastian County Arkansas in the year of 1862. I afterwards saw him with the Rebble Army in the year of 1864.

On this day personally came before the undersigned, a Notary Public within and for the County of Central Dist. and Indian Territory, Sylus Goforth, citizen of Heavener, I.T., whom I certify to be a creditable person and worthy of confidence, who being duly sworn, states that he is personally, well acquainted with applicant Willis Elwood and have known him for 50 years.
That he was a Confederate soldier. Belonging to Company "B" 17th Regiment of Ark. Infty. Vols. That as such soldier he served from about the year 1861 to the close of the war in Spring of 1865. Hardy, citizens of Bates, Ark., whom I certify to be creditable persons and worthy of confidence, who being duly sworn, state that they are each, personally, well acquainted with applicant Willis Elwood, and have known him for 18 or 19 years, respectively.
That he is now and has been for the past twelve months a bona fide resident of Arkansas. That he is incapacitated for manual labor by reason of old age and being unable to work, and that such incapacity (or disability) is not the result of his own vicious habits still persisted in. That to the best of our knowledge, all property now owned by him and his wife, together, is not worth exceeding $400 (exclusive of household goods and wearing apparel). That neither he nor his wife is in receipt of any income, annuity, pension or wages for any services, or the emoluments of an office, in excess of $150 per yea. That we have no interest in this claim.

I, W.T. Atkins, a duly registered and practicing physician in Scott County, Arkansas, do hereby certify that I am personally well acquainted with Willis Elwood of Bates, Arkansas, who is an applicant for a pension under the Statutes of Arkansas.
That at his request I have made an examination of his physical condition, and find: State description and character of disease or disability: that he has chronic sore eyes and Rheumatism and is unable to do manual labor.
Physical condition and to what cause is his incapacity for manual labor attributable: Chronic sore eyes and Rheumatism and that said disability is not the result of his own vicious habits still persisted in.
Extent of disability: Totally unable to do manual labor

APPLICATION FOR INCREASE OF PENSION

I, Willis Elwood do solemnly swear that I am now, and for the past twelve months have been, a bona fide resident of this State; that I am now drawing a pension as an ex-Confederate soldier, under an Act of the General Assembly of 1901, having made my original application from the county of Scott; that I am still in indigent circumstances; that I do not myself, nor does my wife, nor do we both together, own property, real or personal, or both, or money or choses in action in excess of the value of $400.00 (exclusive of household goods and wearing apparel), nor has either of us conveyed title to any property to enable me to draw a pension, and that neither I nor my wife is in receipt of any income, annuity, pension or wages for any services, the emoluments of an office, in excess of $150.00 per year; that I am incapacitated to perform manual labor in any of the ordinary avocations of life; that my disability has increased, and I am less able to perform manual labor than when my original application was made, by reason of increased age and being so diseased and infirm that I am totally incapacitated to perform manual labor and I hereby make application for an increase of pension, under Act of the General Assembly of 1907.

I, Mary Elwood do solemnly swear that I am the widow of Willis Elwood, who served as a soldier in the army (or sailor in the navy) of the Confederate States, his proof of service being now on file in the Auditor's office, at Little Rock, he having been allowed a pension under Act of the General Assembly, approved March 11, 1901, while a resident of Scott County, Arkansas, that I am now, and for the past twelve months have been a bona fide resident of this state; that I do not own property, real or personal, or both, or money or choses in action, in excess of the value of $400.00 (exclusive of household goods and wearing apparel), nor have I conveyed title to any property to enable me to draw a pension, and that I am not in receipt of any income, annuity, pension or wages for any services, the emoluments of an office, in excess of $150.00 per year; that my husband died on the 5th day of Jan. 1912 and that I have not since remarried, so help me God.
