Hughes
aka
County Cemetery or Potter's Field
Information from: Centennial Edition of the "Benton Courier", and Mrs. Loyce Edgin, who cataloged the cemetery in 1975. She said, "The Hughes
Cemetery is one of the oldest cemeteries in Saline County. It was given to the County by the Hughes family. Several years ago the cemetery was
filled with only a few burial places available". Mrs. Edgin added. "Most of the people who are buried there have few if any family remaining.
The cemetery is poorly kept, most of the graves are unmarked and because of the condition of the cemetery, it is very difficult to know who is
buried where."
Directions from the Saline County Court House: Take Market Street to Woodlawn, turn right, cross the railroad tracks and turn back to the right.
The cemetery is located on the old Hughes farm, two (2) miles Southwest of the Court House.
The oldest marked grave is presently that of Lucinda N. Moore, who died, February 9, 1872. The graves of Green B. Hughes, his wife, and Sam
Steele and his wife who had large impressive tombstones, are no longer marked. Apparently the stones were stolen for use some place else.
