Old Lewis Hotel At Maynard, 1904
Mrs. Tommie Lewis Deaton of Lynwood, Calif., furnishes this interesting
photo of the hotel operated by "Uncle Bill" Lewis and wife at Maynard in
1904. The wooden sidewalk at right, which ran beside the hotel was known
as "Lover's Lane," and led to the Ouichita Maynard Academy, which can be
seen in the Background. Professor Rorex was in charge of the academy at
the time the picture was made. On the downstairs porch of the hotel are
standing, from left, Miss Alberta Bass (teacher), Cady Scates, next unknown,
"Uncle Bill" Lewis, Mrs. Emily Lewis, Mrs. Rorex, Prof. Rorex, Ida Lewis
(Mrs. J.J.), J.J. Lewis, Lantie Martin, next 2 unknown, Raymond Reynolds
and Ben Woodall. Standing upstairs are, from left, Alf Lewis, George Lewis,
unknown, Ora Ford, Bush Kirkpatrick, Tommie Lewis, Herma Lewis, Minnie
Woodall, Lura PHipps, Bess Marsh (Mrs. Rorex's sister). Standing at right,
outside the gate are Elvis Abbott and an unknown boy. There was a big spring
at the back of the hotel (marked with an "X" at right, with roof built
over it). Students of the academy stopped to drink at this spring and they
would hide notes under the rocks. Rules were very strict, but romance always
found a way. Old Ouichita Maynard Academy is said to have also dispensed
a "lot of learning." Photo contributed by Dr.
