OBITUARIES FROM POCAHONTAS STAR HERALD - SEPTEMBER 7, 2000

JOHN A.LAMAR SR, 79, of 2208 Pine Valley, Pocahontas, died Friday, Sept. 1, 2000, at Randolph County Medical Center. He was born May 18, 1921 in Lambert, Mississippi, a son of the late Percie Lee and Florence (Tyson) Lamar. He was a retired electrician. His wife, Marcella (Baltz) Lamar,also preceeded him in death. Funeral services were Monday in St. Paul's Catholic Church with burial in St. Paul's Cemetery.

BORDEN COX, 91, of Reyno died at Randolph County Medical Center, Tuesday, August 29,2000. He was born May 8, 1909 near Biggers, a son of the late William D. and Mollie Jane (Carter) Cox. He was a retired pipeline construction worker and farmer. Funeral services were held Friday at Ermert Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Johnston Cemetery near Reyno.

ANDY POWERS, 76,of Walnut Ridge, died Thursday August 31, 2000, at St. Bernards Regional Medical Center in Jonesboro. Born in O'Kean, he resided in Indiana for several years, moving to Walnut Ridge in 1972. Funeral Services were held Monday in House - Gregg Funeral Home in Walnut Ridge. Burial was in Lorado Cemetery.

CARROLL DEAN BONDS, 56, 4484 Highway 166 North, Maynard, died Friday, Sept. 1, 2000, at his residence. He was born May 24, 1944, near O'Kean, a son of Roy and Wanda E. (Lovell) Bonds. Funeral services will be held today(Thursday) at 11 a.m. in the Chapel of McNabb Funeral Home. Burial in Mt. Plesant cemetery.

LOOKING BACK - NEWS FROM THE PAST 24 YEARS AGO (from the files of Sep 9, 1976)

A Maynard man, Walker Peoples Jr., was shot monday night, and the office of Prosecuting Attorney John Craininforms the Star Herald that Donald Avery, also of Maynard, has been charged with second degree murder as a result of the shooting. Crains office said that Peoples was shot at approximately 8:30 p.m. and died at 9:15 p.m. at Randolph County Hospital.

Clarence E. Carlin, 59, who served as a civilian instrument instructor at the Walnut Ridge Air Base during its activation, was killed in a automobile accident at Nebraska City, Neb on Aug 30.

Eric LeRoy Martin, 55, died from injuries sustained in an automobile accident at Stanton, Tn. Sept 6.

George Henderson Mariott, 62, retired farmer and member of one of the county's pioneer families, died at Randolph County Hospital Sunday.

Cpl. Ray Coleman Snodgrass, who is stationed at Municipal Airport in Memphis, was a weekend guest of his parents Mr & Mrs. Joe Snodgrass.

Jackie Archer is able to walk again, after suffering a broken legs some time ago when he fell from a wagon loaded with hay. Dalton News

Born to Mr & Mrs Fred Johnston of Albertha, a girl. Mr & Mrs Xerxes Inness of Eleven Point were the parents of a baby girl, born Sep 6.

Neal Mock suffered a broken arm when he fell at the Warm Springs School.

Mrs Addie Cook of Oconee was bitten by a snake while picking tomatoes.


OBITUARIES FROM POCAHONTAS STAR HERALD SEPTEMBER 14, 2000

WALTER MONROE HILL, 71, a former resident of Pocahontas, died September 4, 2000 in Houston, Texas. He was residing with his sister, Bernice Bertone, in Houston where he was undergoing cancer treatments at the Houston Medical Center. He was born May 20, 1929, the eldest of 4 children born to the late Lonnie and Leo Hill of Pocahontas. Funeral services were held in Houston on Sept. 7.

DONNA LOUISE PERSFUL, 64, of Imboden, died Monday, Sept. 11, 2000, at her home. She was born July 18, 1936 in St Joe, Michigan, a daughter of Laura (Lyons) Archer of Lawrence, Mich. and the late Stanley Archer. The body was cremated.

Burglaries Solved....... Two arrests have been made in connection with recent burglaries in Pocahontas. Criminal Investigator J.D. Yancy told the Star Herald that recent break-ins at the Quick Shop, Parr Industries, Municipal Tennis Courts, (coin boxes) Pocahontas Frozen Food Locker, Childs Speed Wash, Adult Education Building and the local Pool Hall, as well as several vending machines about the city, have been solved. Yancy said it is expected that more arrests will be made, following further investigation.

The local Draft Board forwarded 10 men to Little Rock Tuesday morning for re-examination to determine their eligibility for induction into the armed forces. They were: Cleatus Scott of Dalton; William Jansen and John E. Rodgers of Pocahontas; William B. Poteet of Biggers; James W. McGlothlin and Robert McCandless of Rt. 1 Pocahontas; Richard A. Baltz of Engelberg Route, Pocahontas;; and Buddy Lambert of Makanda, IL.

Bill Swan, who was recently discharged from the U.S. Army, left last Wednesday for Fayetteville where he enrolled at the University of Arkansas.

A-2C Donald D. Crouch spent a 3-day weekend pass with his parents, Mr & Mrs J.O. Crouch in Pocahontas. A-2C Crouch recently completed his training at the Weather Observer's School at Chanute AFB, IL.

Harold Kenneth Stults, age 49, died at his home on the Engelberg Route Sept 16.
Thomas Arthur Blansett, age 71, was found dead in a field at his home in Pocahontas Wednesday afternoon.
George Washington smith, 69, of Warm Springs, died in Randolph County Hospital SUNDAY.
Joe Ab Spikes, 68, died at his home near Ingram Tuesday.

KATHLEEN O’DELL RANDLE, 75, of 1305 Broadway, Pocahontas, died Saturday, September 16, 2000, at her home. She was born October 11, 1924, a daughter of the late George and Florida (Hamilton) O’dell. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon in the Chapel of McNabb Funeral Home. Burial was in Randolph Memorial Gardens.

WILLA TYLER FORD, 93, of Pocahontas died Wednesday September 13, 2000, at Twin Lakes Nursing Home in Flippin. She was born December 10, 1906 in Old Reyno, a daughter of the late Arthur and Rosa (Boyer) Patterson. Funeral services were held Saturday morning in the Skaggs Church of Christ. Burial was in Masonic Cemetery.

KIMBERLY RENEE SIMPSON, 41, of Birmingham, Alabama, died Monday, September 18, 2000, at St. Bernards Medical Center, in Jonesboro. She was born May 4, 1959, in Walnut Ridge, a daughter of Billie M. Koons and Lovis (Fields) Koons, both of Pocahontas. Funeral services will be held today (Thursday) in the Chapel of McNabb Funeral Home. Burial will be in Randolph Memorial Gardens.

EARL HAMIL SLAYTON, 85, of 844 Country Club Road, Pocahontas, died Friday, September 15, 2000, at Randolph County Medical Center. He was born Feb. 11, 1915, in Pocahontas, a son of the late Robert Slayton. Graveside services were held Monday afternoon at Masonic Cemetery with McNabb Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

JOSEPH LEO SCHEID, 80, of Rockford, Ill., died Wednesday, September 13, 2000 at his residence. He was born Jan. 16, 1920 in Pocahontas, the son of Dr. Karl and Anne (Barthel) Scheid. Funeral services were held Friday in St. Rita Catholic Church in Rockford. Burial was in Arlington Memorial Park Cemetery there.

The Old Singing Association, in session at Maynard, elected the following officers: John D. Campbell, president; Dr. J. R. Loftis, vice president; John Q. Pond, chaplin; Ben Choate, secretary; Rufe Lacy, George Booth, Finis Deaver, Tom Robinson and Warren Blankenship, executive committee.

Mr & Mrs Millard Perrin went to Sparkman to teach school.

E.C. Mock and daughters, Misses Ailene and Leola, and Jesse Glover of Maynard went to Henderson , Tn. , where the Misses Mock entered Freed- Hardeman College.

About 90 of G.W. Kings friends gathered at his home at Bluff Springs on Sunday and gave him a surprise birthday dinner. It was his 57th birthday.

BOBBY JOE PRATER, 36, of 1305 Terrace Dr., Apt D, Pocahontas, died Sunday, Sept 24, 2000, at Randolph County Medical Center. He was born June 13, 1964 in Pocahontas, a son of Tommie V. (Huddleston) Becker of Hardy and the late Charles K. Prater. He was a painter. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon (Sept 27, 2000) in the McNabb Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Shiloh Cemetery.

TOMMIE TYLER GREER, 73, of Memphis, died there Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2000, at Baptist East. Born in the Palestine community in Randolph County, she was a member of the Second Baptist Church, and a member of the Rebecca Sunday School Class. Funeral services will be held Thursday Sept 28, 2000 at 2 p.m. , at the Germantown Parkway Chapel, and burial will follow in Memory Hill Gardens there.

WAFE E. WEATHERSPOOON, 77, of Pocahontas, died Tuesday Sept 12, 2000. He was born Sept 15, 1922 in Success, a son of the late W.E. and Jewell Taylor Weatherspoon. He served his country in World War II, was a musician and played several stringed instruments. Funeral services were held Sept 15, 2000 in the Chapel of Cox-Waymon Funeral Home. Burial was in Dalton Cemetery near Old Burr, Mo.

ALBERT PIERCE, 95, of Jonesboro, died Sept 21, 20000, at his home there. Born in Black Oak, Mr. Pierce lived most of his life in the Otwell-Valley View communities. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at Emerson Memorial chapel with burial following in McDaniel Cemetery. Local survivors include a son, G.W. Pierce of Pocahontas.

Marine Private First Class James H. Patterson, son of Mrs. Agnes Patterson of Ravenden Springs, has been promoted to his present rank while serving with the 1st Marine Brigade at Keneohe, Hawaii. P.F.C. Patterson, a former student at Oak Ridge Central School, joined the Marine Corps in January of this year.

Marine Corporal Terry J. Jones, son of Mr and Mrs Alden Jones of Pocahontas, has graduated from Non-Commissioned Officer School at the Marine Corps Air Station, Yuma, Ariz. A former student of Pocahontas high School, Jones joined the Marine Corps in February 1975.

Mrs Edna Morris Graham, age 66, died at Randolph County Hospital last Friday, after a weeks illness.

Patricia Jones, 5 year old daughter of Mrs Barbara Jones of the Maynard Route, died in Illinios Sept 28.

MISC.

Misses Lou Morris and Betty Holobaugh enterained with an informal supper and farewell party at the American Legion Hut Saturday night in honor of Ray Neal Rose who left Wednesday to enter military service.

Triplet calves, 2 heifers and a male, were born on the farm of Mr & Mrs Harold Bly, two miles west of Five Mile Springs, on Sept 21.

Everett Prevett, son of Mr and Mrs Jess Prevett, died from injuries received when he fell from a tree several hours earlier.

H.G. McNabb, funeral director, leased to old State Bank building and installed fixtures for a modern undertaking establishment.

Mrs Mary Campbell, age 88, died at her home near Birdell. When young, and during the Gold Rush, she and her parents made a trip to California in an ox .

Born to Mr & Mrs Bernard Difani, on Sept 12, a 12 pound boy, named Phil.


OBITUARIES - Pocahontas Star Herald, October 5, 2000  Funeral services for FELICIA ANN ELLIOTT, age 7, of Dalton, were held Sunday afternoon in the Chapel of McNabb Funeral Home with Paul Craig officiating. Burial was in the Gravesville Cemetery. Felicia was born August 20, 1990, in Poplar Bluff, Mo., a daughter of the late Carl Allen and Lisa Earlene (DuBois) Elliott.  VIDA MILDRED ROBERTS, 85, of Pocahontas, died Saturday, Sept 3, 2000, at the Pocahontas Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was born Nov. 18, 1914 in Pocahontas, a daughter of the late James Columbus and Sarah Elizabeth (Nelson) Johnson. Her husband, Thurman Roberts, preceded her in death. Graveside services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Gross Cemetery.  BOB LEMMONS, 64, of Springdale, died Sept. 16, 2000, at Northwest Medical Center there. He was born July 17, 1936, in Pocahontas, to Cobly and Edna Lewis Lemmons. He was a private club owner. Survivors include his wife Barbara Lemmons of the home. Graveside services were held Wednesday, Sept. 20, at Friendship Cemetery with Rev. Eddie Free officiating. Arrangements were by Sisco Chapel of Springdale.  WILLARD EDWARD KUEPFER, 67, of Ravenden Springs, died Wednesday, Sept 27, 2000. He was born in Pocahontas, Ill., Dec 6, 1932, a son of the late William and Eliza Hartman Kuepfer. He was a member of the Seventh Day Pentecost Church in Hoxie. Survivors include his wife Alice, of the home. Funeral services were held Sunday in the Chapel of May Funeral Home of Pocahontas, Ill.  Interment was in Jamestown Cemetery in Pocahontas, Ill. Local arrangements were by Cox-Waymon Funeral Home.  JOE A. EZELL, 58, of 735 Hwy. 328 West, Maynard, died Wednesday, Sept 27, 2000, at Randolph County Medical center. He was born Nov. 21, 1941, a son of the late Samuel Lewis and Henrietta (Huffman) Ezell. He was a farmhand. Graveside services were held Saturday afternoon in Overby Cemetery near Maynard with Howard Barr officiating. McNabb Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.  DANNY E. BROWN, 42, of 935 Diles Creek Road, Pocahontas, died Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2000, at the Memphis Trauma Center, of injuries sustained in a fall. He was a construction worker. Survivors include his parents, Ernest Brown and Dorothy Bertleson, both of Arkansas. A memorial service will be held Nov. 4 at 1 p.m., at 435 Diles Creek Road at the home of Chuck Brown.  FLORA MAE CRAWFORD, 95, of Pocahontas, died Saturday, Sept. 30, 2000, at Randolph Home. She was born May 18, 1905, at Dalton, a daughter of the late Johnnie and Jessie(Ladyman) Higgins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Homer Crawford. Funeral services were held Monday morning in the Chapel of Mcnabb Funeral Home.. Burial followed in Masonic Cemetery.  HAROLD LEON SNOW, 71, of Pocahontas, died Saturday, Sept 30, 2000.  He was born Oct. 26, 1928, a son of the late Freeman and Virgie Smith Snow.  Funeral services were held Monday, with Bro. Carl Massey officiating. Burial was in Clearview Cemetery. Services were under the direction of Cox-Waymon Funeral Home.  LORENE JONES, 85, of Southaven, Miss., died Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2000, at Baptist Memorial DeSota in Southaven. She was born in Doniphan, Mo., a daughter of the late Jerry and Frances (Pierce) Price. He husband Noel Jones preceded her in death. Funeral Services were held Friday afternoon in the Chapel of McNabb Funeral Home. Burial followed in Mt. Plesant Cemetery near Pitman.  DAVID EUGENE HILL, 61, of Jonesboro, died Sunday, Oct. 1, 2000, at his home there. He was born March 1, 1939, near Egypt, Ar., a son of Mallie Hill and the late Elmer Hill. He resided in Jonesboro for 53 years, retiring from the City Street Department. Survivors, in addition to his mother, include his wife Sybil Hill of the home. Funeral services were held Wednesday morning in Roller-Farmers Union Chapel in Jonesboro. Burial was in Pine Hill Cemetery there.

Men In Service ... Steven G. Franks, son of Mr & Mrs Leo G. Franks of Rt. 3 Pocahontas, has been promoted to Airman First Class in the U.S. Air Force while serving in Huntingdon, England. Franks is a 1975 graduate of Maynard High School.

Airman First Class John D. Brech, son of retired U.S. Air Force Master Sargeant And Mrs Lawrence P. Brech of Rt. 5 Pocahontas, is taking part in Crested Cap ''76, a NATO exercise in Germany. Airman Brech is a 1974 graduate of Maynard High School. His wife, Margaret, is the daughter of Mr & Mrs Dewrell Flanigan of Rt. 5 Pocahontas.

Mr & Mrs Johnny Ray Brown of Redwood, Miss., announce the arrival of a baby girl, Katrina Dawn, on Sept 29 at Vicksburgg, Miss. Grandparents are Mr. & Mrs. Ray B.. Brown of Rt. 4, and John R. Jones of Rt. 1 Walnut Ridge.

Sgt. & Mrs Joel Huggins of Washinton D.C., announce the birth of a son, John Paul, who was born Friday in Walter Reed Hospital there. The new arrival is a great-grandson of Mrs. Lila Sallee of Pocahontas.

Mr & Mrs Phillip Burton of Jonesboro announce the arrival of a son, born Monday, Oct 5. He has been named ben Spikes Burton. Paternal grandparents are Mr & Mrs E. Winston Burton of Jonesboro and Mr & Mrs Bill Spikes of Pocahontas.

Jesse C. Hayes, son of Mr & Mrs A. Hayes of Ingram, has been awarded the Bronze Star medal for exemplary conduct in ground combat against the armed enemy during the Rhineland Campaign in the European Theater of Operations in 1945.

Airman Thomas F. Parker, son of Mr & Mrs R.L. Parker of Pocahontas, has returned here aboard the aircraft carrier USS Boxer, Sept 26, after completing its third tour of duty in Korean waters.

ROY LEE TOWNSEND, 55, of Pocahontas, died Sunday, Oct. 8, 2000 at his home. He was born Jan 31, 1945, the son of the late Daily and Eda Frances (Howard) Townsend. Survivors include his wife Geraldine Haynes. Graveside services will be today (Thursday) at 2 p.m. at Spikes Cemetery with Tillman Wicker officiating.

TOMMY W. CRISHER, 62, OF Warm Springs, died Monday Oct 9, 2000, at randolph county Medical Center. He was born April 10, 1938, in Amagon. Survivors include his wife, Theresa Crisher of the home. graveside services will be held today (Thursday), at 2 p.m., in Johnson Cemetery at Cash, with Tim Forrest officiating. Roller-Farmers union Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

JEANITA MAE JOHNSON, 73, of Pocahontas, died Thursday oct 5, 2000, at St Bernards Regional Center, Jonesboro. She was born Oct 21, 1926, in Hoxie. She was a daughter of Edith Mae (Spargo) Tyler and the late William H. Tyler. She was preceded in death by her husband Albert E. Johnson. Graveside services were held Oct 10, st Randolph Memorial Gardens with Paul Craig officiating. McNabb Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

WETZEL S. MOORE, husband of Chrystal Moore of McAllen, Texas, died Oct 2, 2000 at McAllen Medical Center. He was born April 7, 1924, a son of Henry Moore and Verda Pyland Moore Hulse. The body was cremated.

International recognition for Pocahontas author......Gary Miller of Poocahontas has received Honorable Mention in a gravity essay contest. The Association for encouraging Gravity Research of Austin, Texas, sponsored the competition as part of this country's Bicentennial Celebration. Miller's paper, "Principle of Action Gravitation - A New Look at Gravitational Principles," presented a new theory of gravity originated by the author. Sir Issac Newton's universal law of gravitation and Albert Einstein's famous mass energy formula were both derived from a single basic law for the first time.

Mr & Mrs Alfred Kildow of Dalton became grandparents twice on Oct. 6, but the grandchildren are not twins. At 8:45 a.m. their daughter, Mrs Calvin (Brenda) Botard, gave birth to a girl, Anita Lynnette. At 2:41 p.m., their son Allen Kildow's wife Linda, gave birth to a boy named Derrick Allen. Miss Sue Thompson was honored Tuesday night Oct 7, when Miss Mary Jane and Ambertine Million enterained with a party at the Pearl Hogan home; the occasion being her 16th birthday.

A - 1C David L. Mitchell, who had spent an emergency leave here with his wife, Mrs Celeste Mitchell, and with other relatives in Pocahontas and Water Valley, left Sunday for his return to Florence Italy, where he is stationed.

James Polk Chesser, 83, well known Randolph County farmer, died at his home in Pocahontas Monday.

Glenn Francis Barnes, 62, retired Pocahonta hotel man, died in a Jonesboro hospital Thursday morning.

James C. Carter, 64, died at his home on Route 1 Thursday.

G.M. Throgmorton, cotton statistician for Randolph county, reported that there were 821 bales of cotton ginned in the county up to Oct 1 as compared with 751 bales up to Oct 1, 1927.

Forty children, each riding, pushing or pulling a gaudily decorated vehicle, took part in a "Kid Parade" staged by King's Famous Cash Store here Saturday. The parade formed at King's Store and marched around the square, returning to the store where prizes were awarded to the participants. Three first prizes were given, 2 one-dollar bills and a big doll, and each child in the parade got a box of candy.--

OBITUARIES FROM POCAHONTAS STAR HERALD - OCTOBER 19, 2000

JERALD STOCKWELL, 66, OF 703 Pine St. Pocahontas, died Thursday, Oct 12, 2000 at St. Bernards Regional Medical Center, Jonesboro. He was born Dec 28, 1933 in Randolph County, a son of Stella (Broadway) Stockwell of Ash Flat and the Thomas Oscar Stockwell. He was a retired shoe cutter from Brown Shoe Co. Survivors, in addition to his mother, include his wife Cleta "Sue" Barnes Stockwell. Funeral services were held Saturday morning in the Chapel of McNabb Funeral Home with Rev. John Turner officiating. Burial followed in Randolph Memorial Gardens.

FLOYD MARTIN SMITH, 56, of 203 Thomasville, Pocahontas, died Monday, Oct 16, 2000, at Randolph County Medical Center. He was born Sept 28, 1944, in Lansing, Michigan, a son of the late Troy and Marie (Mathis) Smith. He was a trucker. Survivors include his wife Verna R. Martin Smith of the home. Funeral services will be held today (Thursday) at 10 a.m., in the Chapel of McNabb Funeral Home with Sidney White officiating. Burial followed in Randolph Memorial Gardens.

CHRISTEEN A. ROWE, 75, of 2210 Johnson circle, Pocahontas, died Sunday, Oct 15, 2000, at randolph County Medical Center. She was born July 27, 1925, in Doniphan, Mo., a daughter of the late Richard Blaine and Gertie Lee (Bennett) Stone. She was a retired nurse. Her husband James P. Rowe preceded her in death. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Oct 21, at Sutton Freewill Baptist Church with Randy Scott officiating. Burial will follow in Hite Cemetery near Biggers under the direction of McNabb Funeral Home.

IRENE HULVEY, 82, of Pocahontas, died Saturday, Oct 14, 2000. She was born in Pocahontas, Nov 24, 1917, a daughter of the late J.L. and Hattie Brown Crawford. She was preceded in death by her husband Howard Hulvey. Funeral services were held Monday in the Chapel of Cox-Waymon Funeral Home with Dean Sullins officiating. Interment was in Thompson cemetery.

HERMAN BLACKWELL, 83, of 310, Oak St., Pocahontas, died Wednesday, Oct 11, 2000, at his home. He was born Nov. 16, 1916, in Warm Springs, a son of the late Jim and Sarah (Jones) Blackwell. He was a retired dock worker. Survivors include his wife Darlis Mae (Jones) Blackwell. Graveside services were held Friday afternoon in the warm Springs Cemetery with Darrell Fears officiating. McNabb Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

JOHN DONALD FLANNERY, 67, of Corning, died Tuesday, Oct 10, 2000, at St Bernards Regional Medical Center, Jonesboro. He was born July 25, 1933, in Delaplaine, a son of the late John Edgar and Addie Katherine (Blackwood) Flannery. He was a farmer. his wife Dorothy Jean Walker Flannery preceded him in death. Funeral services were held Friday in the Chapel of McNabb Funeral Home with Blue Hothouse officiating. Burial followed in Jones Ridge Cemetery near Delaplaine.

PARK EXPANDING....Grant for $477,800.00 for OLD DAVIDSONVILLE - The Ozark Foothills Resource Conservation and Developement Project has announced a plan to further develop Old Davidsonville State Park as a water-based recreation area. Planned facilities include a 12-acre lake, two miles of nature trails, 20 picnic sites, 25 trailer camer units, boat launching facilities on Black River, sanitary facilities, electric service, parking areas and fencing. Total estimated cost of the measure, which includes purchase of approximately 38 acres of land, is $477, 800.00.

Navy Boiler Technician Fireman Warren C. Ragan, son of Mr & Mrs Loyd Ragan of Route 2, and whose wife, Lisa, is the daughter of Mr & Mrs Kenneth Tyler of Route 4, all of near Pocahontas, participated in exercise "Bonded Item" in the North Sea. Ragan is serving aboard the amphibious transport dock USS Raliegh, homeported in Norfolk, Va. Ragan is a 1975 graduate of Pocahontas High School and entered the Navy in July 1975.

Arthur Lewis Weatherford, aged 60, died at his home on Rt.1, North Little Rock, Sunday.

Thomas Alexander Fowler, aged 66, of Supply, died suddenly Friday after he had been stricken with a heart ailment near Biggers.

David Burns Brady, aged 76, of Imboden died at his home monday.

Frank Wilson of near Clearview brought to the Star Herald office a dozen of the largest wild persimmons ever grown around here. The largest was 7 inches in circumference and weighed 6 ounces.

The Hoxie High School Watchdogs ran wild in the Pocahontas-Hoxie football game played at Hoxie and rolled up a 60-0 score against the local eleven.

SUSAN MCARTHY, 92, of Maynard, died Sunday, October 22, 2000, at Outlook Point, Pocahontas. She was born March 29, 1908, in Coaldale, Pa., a daughter of the late Frank and Susan (Maholic) Durilla. Her husband, John McCarthy preceded her in death.. She was a retired R.N. The body was cremated.

LULA BELL DEAN, 83, of 1006 Wyatt St., Pocahontas, died Tuesday, October 17, 2000, at Pocahontas Nursing & Rehab Center. Born Jan. 2, 1917 in Pocahontas, she was a retired nurse's aid. Her husband pringle dean preceded her in death. Funeral services were held friday afternoon in the Chapel of mcNabb Funeral Home with Arvil Tribble officiating. Burial followed in Randolph memorial Gardens.

CARROLL RAY BOLIEN, 35, died Friday, October 13, 2000, in McAlester, Okla. Born October 7, 1965, in Walnut Ridge, , he was a son of Bob Bolien of Ravenden Springs, and Ina Sue Garigin, of McAlester, Okla. Survivors include his wife Shirley (Adems) Bolien.Funeral services were held October 17 at the First Free Will Baptist church of McAlester. Burial was in Memory gardens.

MILDRED DELENA CREMEENS, 80, of St. Louis, Mo., died sunday October 22, 2000, at Christian Hospital N.E. there. She was born August 20, 1920, in Black Rock, a daughter of the late Fred and Lena (Blansett) Brandon. She was a retired inspector. Survivors include her husband Virgil Cremeens of the home. Graveside services were held at Old Union Cemetery near Pocahontas Tuesday afternoon. Mcnabb Funeral home was in charge of arangements.

GEORGE JORDAN, 94, died October 20, 2000, at Lawrence Hall Nursing Home in Walnut Ridge. He was born October 15, 1906, in Carter County, Mo., and had made his home i8n Pocahontas since moving there from Missouri in the 1960s.. He was a retired carpenter. he was preceded in death by his wife Gladys Carmickle Jordon. Graveside services were held Monday, October 23, at 2 p.m. at the Macedonia Cemetery in Grandin, Mo.

GORDON DEE LANE, 50, of Warrenton, Mo., died at his home there monday, October 23, 2000. He was born November 5, 1949, in New Madrid, Mo., a son of Hazel (McCallister) Lane and the late Dual Gordon Lane. He was retired from General Motors. Survivors, in addition to his mother who resides in Reyno, include his wife Barbara Lane of the home Graveside services were held Wednesday afternoon at Corning Cemetery, with Ermert Funeral Home of Corning in charge of arrangements.

WARREN R. PERSFUL, 65, of Gobles, Mich., formerly of Decatur, Mich., died Friday, Sept 22, 2000, at his home. He was born Sept. 21, 1935 in Pocahontas, a son of the late Jasper and mary (Wheeler) Persful. He was a machinist for K & M Machine and Fabricating of Cassopolis for 33 years. Survivors include his wife Adell Gustafson Persful. The body was cremated. Newell Funeral Home of Decatur was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. & Mrs. Harold Ungerank are announcing the arrival of their fourth child, a son, Matthew Joseph, at Randolph county Hospital on Oct. 24.

MEN IN SERVICE

Sergeant Bobbie J. Hennings, son of Mrs Naomi Hennings of Route 1, Maynard, recently took part in "Giant Voice '76" the Strategic Air Command's bombing and navigational competition held at Barksdale A.F.B., La.

IN THE LONG AGO (from files of Oct 30, 1952)

The Cox Cotton Company of Pocahontas, owners of the Manson Gin, located about 5 miles from here, suffered an estimated $50,000 loss when the gin building there was destroyed by fire at noon last Thursday.

The local draft board forwarded three men to Little Rock Monday morning for re-examination to determine their elgibility for services in the armed forces. They were: William Fay Kirby, James R. Massey, Dalton Route, Pocahontas and Clarence H. Sullinger of O'Kean.

Deloss Walker left Wednesday, Oct 22, for induction into the Army and is at present located at Ft. Sill, Okla. He is a son of Mrs Dora Walker of O'Kean.

Mr Ratha Cox, 55, prominrnt citizen of reyno, died at his home saturday from heart trouble.

Miss Lucille Brown, daughter of Jim Brown of dalton, won 21 blue ribbons at the Randolph county Fair of 1928.

A wooden shoe last, apparently hand carved and evidently very old, was brought to the Star Herald by Ina Clark who lives east of town on the Carter farm.

Born to Mr & Mrs Benton Holt of Warm Springs, a boy named J.R.

Mr & Mrs W.R. Perdue of Smethwick were the parents of twin babies, a boy and a girl. This is the second pair of twins in the Perdue family.

BERTHA ELLEN LOWERY, 71, of 464 Cagle Road, Pocahontas, died Sunday, October 29, 2000, at her home. She was born Feb. 22, 1929, near Dalton, a daughter of the late Rufe and Alma (Nimmo) McManners. Her husband, Clinton Lowery, preceded her in death. Graveside services were Wednesday afternoon at Sutton Cemetery with Neil Inness officiating. McNabb Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

ETHEL L. MIDGETT, 85, of Walnut Ridge, died Wednesday, October 25, 2000, at Beverly Health Care in Jonesboro. She was bornnnn April 9, 1915 in Crawford County, Mo., a daughter of the late George Billingsley. Her husband, Henry A. Midgett, preceded her in death. Funeral services were held Saturday morning in the Church of God in Walnut Ridge. Burial followed in Strangers Home Cemetery near Alicia with McNabb Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

ELEWESE LOUISE ROSE, 78, of 905 Van Bibber, Pocahontas, died Wednesday October 25, 2000, at her home. She was born Nov. 19, 1921, in the mcIlroy community, a daughter of the late Albert I. and Virginia (Lamb) Romines. Survivors include her husband Lowell Rose of the home. Funeral services were held Friday afternoon in the Chapel of McNabb Funeral Home. Burial followed in Masonic Cemetery.

LEWIS G. "Slim" DOVER, 67, a resident of Aurora, Ill., died Wednesday, October 25, 2000, at Vencor Hospital in Sycamore, Ill. He was born June 6, 1933 in Harrisburg, a son of the late Huler and Daisy Dover. Survivors include his wife Mary Lou (Brown) Dover. Betty Lou Holobaugh, daughter of Mr & Mrs Jim Holobaugh of Pocahontas, left Wednesday, Oct. 29, for Bainbridge, Maryland, where she will receive her nine weeks "boot training" and begin her career as a Wave in the United States Navy.

Recent deaths reported in Randolph County were those of Mrs J.E. Prevett, 58, of Warm Springs and W.T. Vinson, 45, of Rt. 1, Walnut Ridge.

United States voters have elected Herbert Hoover to the office of President of the United States. He defeated Democratic candidate Alfred E. Smith of New York, who was supported by Arkansas voters by a considerable margin.

Following the resigination of County Judge George W. Million, Gov. Parnell appointed Joe S. Decker of Pocahontas to fill the vacancy during the remaining two months of Judge Million's term.

PHILLIP EDWARD RAGLIN, 19, of Pocahontas, died Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2000, at Elvis Presley Trauma Center in Memphis. Phillip was injured on Oct. 7 in an accident involving a piece of farm machinery at his father's farm on Hwy. 304 east of Pocahontas. Phillip was a 1999 graduate of Pocahontas high School. He was born Sept. 6, 1981 in Pocahontas, a son of Charlie Raglin and Vicki (Prince) Raglin, both of Pocahontas. Funeral services will be held today(Thursday) at 10 a.m. in Skaggs Church of Christ with Gerald Fears officiating. Burial will follow in Masonic Cemetery under direction of McNabb Funeral Home.

WALLACE "Wally" CLINTON DEARLOVE, 65, of Swedeborg, Mo., died saturday, Nov. 4, 2000, in the University of Missouri Medical Center, Columbia, Mo. He was born Dec. 31, 1934 at O'Kean, a son of the late John and Marie Martin Dearlove. He was a U.S. Army veteran. Survivors include his wife, Lillie Dell Smith Dearlove of the home. Funeral services were held Nov. 8 in the Crocker Chapel of the Birmingham - Martin Funeral Home with Pastor Doug Jacobson officiating. Graveside services with full military honors, were held in the Sutton cemetery near Pocahontas.

THELMA MAXINE COMBS WILDRICK, 79, of Imboden, died Tuesday Nov. 7, 2000, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital in walnut Ridge. She was born April 30, 1921 in Black Rock, a daughter of the late Henry and Mary Belle (Hasselback) Combs. Her husband, William B. Wildrick, preceded her in death. Funeral services were held Friday in the Higginbotham Chapel of Walnut Ridge with Rev Joe Loghry officiating. Burial followed in the Hope Cemetery near Imboden.

JACKIE JUANITA PEARSON, 83 of 35 Hwy. 328 East, Maynard, died Saturday, Nov. 11, 2000, at St. Bernards Regional Medical Center in Jonesboro. Born July 15, 1917 near Maynard, she was a daughter of the late Sam and Viola (Templeton) Killough. Survivors include her husband C. V. Pearson of the home. Graveside services were held Tuesday at Ingram Cemerery near Maynard. McNabb Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

GENEVIEVE DRURY, 79, of 2111 Dalton St., Pocahontas, died Monday Oct. 23, 2000, at the University of Arkansas Medical center in Little Rock. Born Aug. 30, 1921 in Pocahontas, she was a daughter of the late Charles and Annie (Sago) Johnston. Her husband Charles Drury preceded her in death. Funeral services were held Oct. 26 in the Chapel of McNabb Funeral Home with G.W. Allison officiating. Burial followed in Masonic Cemetery.

NELLIE VICTORIA CLARK, 84, of Pocahontas, died Saturday, Nov. 11, 2000, at her home. She was born Sept. 16, 1916 in Savannah, Tn., a daughter of the late John William and Adline Tabitha (Dennis) Todd. Survivors include her husband, Clarence Clark of the home. Funeral services were held Sunday in Sutton Freewill Baptist Church with Randy Scott officiating. Burial followed in Thompson Cemetery.

MAXINE CREWS MATTESON, 83, of Ventura, Ca., died Nov. 10, 2000. She was the daughter of the late Leonard and Mara Stubblefield Crews. She was a graduate of Pocahontas High School. Her husband, Jack Matteson, preceded her in death. a memorial service will be held for her on Nov. 25 in Ventura, Ca.

JESS PAUL WOLF, 70, died Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2000, in Camp Verde, Ariz. He was born Dec. 14, 1929, in Pocahontas. Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Dorothy Marilee Wolf. Memorial services were held Oct. 28 in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Camp Verde. Westcott Funeral of Camp Verde was in charge of arrangements.

HOWARD RIO LYNCH, 90, of Pocahontas, died Saturday, Nov. 11, 2000, at st. Bernards Regional Center in Jonesboro. He was born July 1, 1910, in Randolph County, a son of the late James Henry and Myrtle Beegle (Daisy) Lynch. His wife elsie Lynch preceded him in death. Funeral services were held Wednesday in the Chapel of McNabb Funeral Home with Jerry Collins officiating. Burial followed in Harmony Cemetery.

SIMUEL JOHNSON, 85, of 31 Scott St., Biggers, died thursday, Nov. 9, 2000 at his residence. He was born dec. 8, 1914 in Biggers, a son of Samuel and Ader Johnson. His wife Violet Johnson preceded him in death. Funeral services were held Tuesday in the Chapel of McNabb Funeral Home with David Edington and Larry Rogers officiating. Pfc Lovell Prater, 21 year old Randolph County man, was among 44 military men killed in the crash of a C-119 Flying Boxcar on a Korean mountian last Thursday. Young Prater was a son of Mrs Eva Bates of Rt 1 Pocahontas and the husband of Mrs Mona Johnston Prater of Biggers.

William C Jansen, 22, son of Mr & Mrs Martin Jansen of Pocahontas is completing his basic airman indoctrination training at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas.

Louis Ivo Thiele, 15 year old son of Mr & Mrs Mike Thiele of the Maynard Route, was killed shortly before 7 O'clock Sunday morning when the family car, driven by his brother, ran off highway 115 and overturned near the Mansker Creek bridge.

Mr & Mrs John Owens Washam are the parents of a daughter, named Judy Kay, born in Randolph County Hospital November 10.

Jean Long, Betty Elkins, Martha Story, Nancy Lemmons, and Norma Ward will be the five young ladies who will lead the cheering section for the Redskins at the homecoming game, November 27, when the Redskins meet the Walnut Ridge Bobcats on the local field.

O M Spencer purchased a corn crusher and grist mill from Joe Jarrett, Monday. He will grind corn meal for the public. - Richardson News.

Dr J E Smith, Reyno Physician and owner of the Reyno Drug Store, is in a Memphis hospital following an attack of illness that is baffling to his physician.

Claud Bailey won the main prize, a Jersey heifer, at Randolph County's fourth Dairy Day in Pocahontas, Wednesday.

VERNON JAMES "JIM" KING JR., 56 of Pocahontas died suddenly at his home on Friday, November 17, 2000. He was born October 31, 1944 in Memphis, a son of Vernon James King of Pocahontas and the late Martha (Pickens) King. In addition to his father he is survived by his wife Jacqueline Smith King of the home; a son Winston King and a daughter Martha Ellen King. Graveside services were held Monday morning at Randolph Memorial Gardens. McNabb Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

KERMIT VINSON, 65, of Jacksonville, died Wednesday, November 15, 2000, at Baptist Hospital in Little Rock. He was born September 17, 1935 in Newport, Tenn. Survivors include his wife Marion Louise Williams Vinson of the home. Funeral services were held Saturday morning in the Chapel of McNabb Funeral Home. Burial followed in Jarrett Cemetery near Maynard.

HENRY ARTHUR "ART" DENTON, 92, of Walnut Ridge, died Sunday, November 19, 2000, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital in Walnut Ridge. He was born October 28, 1908, in Mountain View, Mo., a son of the late Anderson and Pearl (Yarber) Denton. survivors include his wife, Clara Naomi Connelly Denton of the home. Funeral services were held Tuesday morning in the Chapel of McNabb Funeral Home. Burial followed in Greene County Memorial Park.

REAR ADM. BEN BROWN PICKETT, U.S. Navy retired died Tuesday, October 24, 2000, in Williamsburg Community Hospital. He was 85. Rear Adm. Pickett was born and raised in Pocahontas. Survivors include his wife Virginia King Beathard Pickett of Williamsburg. Burial was private. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, December 2, at Abingdon Espicopal Church, Gloucester, Va. Hogg Funeral Home, Gloucester Point, Va. were in charge of arrangements.

She preceded him in death. Funeral services were Friday at Friendship Methodist Church in Ravenden. Burial was in Friendship Cemetery. WILLIAM H. "BALDIE" COX, 79, of Pocahontas, who recently won re-election to his eleventh term as a Randolph County Justice of the Peace, died Wednesday, Nov 22, 2000, at St Bernards Regional Medical Center in Jonesboro. He was born May 25, 1921 in Clay County, a son of the late Jess and Dora Cox. Survivors include his wife Alta Marie Griggs Cox of the home. LEO B. RIEVES, an 88-year-old retired farmer of Corning, died Tuesday, Nov 21, 2000, in the Three Rivers Healthcare, Poplar Bluff, Mo. He was born March 26, 1912, at Maynard. On Apr 21, 1933, he was married to Geraldine Spencer, who proceded him in death. On Sept 9, 1978 he married Oneta Haley Bradfore, who survives. MAXINE M. ROOK, , 80, of Pocahontas, died Sunday, nov 26, 2000, at her home. She was born May 29, 1920, near Noland, a daughter of the late Emmitt and Maude (Bates) Hufstedler. She was a retired teacher at Noland and a member of the Westridge Church of Christ. She was McNabb Funeral Home. Burial followed in Hufstedler Cemetery near Noland.

THELAM L. JOHNSTON, 98, of Corning, died nov 21, 2000, at Arkansas Methodist Hospital in Paragould. Touch calling permits customers to push buttons emitting a musical tone instead of twirling a dial. Studies have shown that fewer dialing errors are made with touch calling abd it is faster, easier and more convenient that conventional dial telephones.

A thief or thieves entered the store of J.F. Jackson, which houses the post office at Eleven Point and made away with about $60.00 in cash, merchandise, and stamps.

The store of Rufe Wooldridge at Eleven Point was entered by robbers who got away with about $70.00 worth of dry goods.

He was born Feb 17, 1912 at Salem, Mo, the son of the late William Perry and Cynthia Elizabeth Meade Lundry.

CHESTER JONES, 86, of Pocahontas, died Friday, December 1, 2000. He was born July 29, 1914, at Brookings, a son of the late Lucy (Phillips) Starling. He was a retired carpenter. Survivors include his wife, Ruth Edna (Lewis) Jones of the home. Funeral services were held Monday at the Ermert Funeral Home Chapel in Corning. Airman First Class John D. Brech, son of Retired Air Force Master Sergeant & Mrs Lawrence P. Brech of Rt. 5, Pocahontas, has arrived for duty at Blytheville Air Force Base. Airman Brech is a air traffic control specialist, a 1974 graduate of Maynard High School and is married to the former Margaret Flanigan, daughter of Mr & Mrs Dewrell Flanigan.

Timothy W. Huskey, 21, son of Mr & Mrs Donnie L Huskey of Imboden, was recently promoted to Army Corporal while serving as a gunner in the 8th Infantry Division in Mannheim, Germany.

Army Private John P. Allred, whose wife, Carmen, lives in O'Kean, recently was assigned as a chaplain's assistant with the 1st Infantry Division Artillery at Ft. Riley, Kansas. Private allred is a 1976 graduate of Walnut Ridge High School.

George F. Lemmons, 80, a active photographer in Pocahontas for about 35 years, died at his home in Pocahontas Saturday..

Nathan Edgar Smith, 74, died at his home in Pocahontas on Monday.

Alfred Andrew Griffith, 84, well-known retired farmer , died at the home of az son , J.Q. Griffith, Dec 1

Sanford U. Riggs, 77, died at his home in Hoxie Friday.

Amos Clinton Lester, 23, died at his home in Ravenden Wednesday afternoon.
 
 

Mr & Mrs H. Gardner McNabb have named their baby son Michael Lehman. He was born at Randolph County Memorial Hospital here on Wednesday night of last week.

S-Sgt. Willard Kincade returned to the States Tuesday after spending the past 17 months in overseas duty in Korea.

Cpl. Jimmy Brooks is expected to be home with his parents, Mr & Mrs Aaron Brooks and family during the holidays.

We are glad to see Edsel Brooks back home after a three year absence. He has been in Germany. Edsel is the son of Mr & Mrs Ryburn Brooks. ----- Maynard News.

Born to Mr & Mrs Alvin Cude of Old Jackson, on Dec 3, a baby girl.

Mr & Mrs Ed Tyler of Noland had a new baby girl born at their home Sundy morning.

Dr. J.E. Smith of Reyno, who had been ill in a Memphis hospital and Dee McCrary of Biggers, who was taken to a Memphis hospital following a gin accident, have returned to their homes.
