OBITUARIES

LISBETH LYNN "LIBBY" PUGH, 51, of Walnut Ridge, died Dec. 28, 1999, at the home of a daughter in Wynne.  She was born sept. 25, 1948, in Jonesboro, a daughter of Betty Sue (Brewer) Lewallen of Pocahontas and the late Lloyd Leo
Lewallen, Sr.  She is buried in Masonic Cemetery.

BILLY JOE COUNTS, 70, of Pocahontas, died Jan 1, 2000, in Okeechobee, Fla. He was born Sept. 24, 1929, in the Water Valley Community, a son of Loretta (Wilkerson) Counts of Pocahontas and the late Frank Jefferson Counts.  He is
survived by his wife, Wanda Williams counts and is buried in Masonic Cemetery.

A memorial service for DENA GODWIN HATTENSTEIN will be held Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock at Cache River Pentecostal Church on Highway 228 West in Sedgwick.

LOUIS JOHN SORG, 86, of Belvidere, Ill, died Dec. 30, 1999, at Park Strathmoore Nursing Home in Rockford, Ill.  He was born Sept. 18, 1913, in Carthage, MO, a son of the late Herman Joseph and Anna (Junkersfeld) Sorg. He is survived by his wife, Erma White Sorg and is buried in St. Paul's Cemetery, Pocahontas.

MILDRED WEIR, 87, of Fairfield Glade, Tenn., formerly of Walnut Ridge, died Dec. 25, 1999, at the Wharton Nursing Home in Crossville, TN.  She was born June 14, 1912, in Black Rock, a daughter of the late Wade and Louise Weir
Foster.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Levi Weir, and is buried in Oak Forrest Cemetery near Black Rock.

HOBERT MOORE, 82, of Corning, died Dec. 29, 1999, at Pocahontas convalescent Center.  He was born April 12, 1917 in Bethel Springs, Tenn., a son of the late Oce and Mollie Eubanks Moore.  His wife, Mary (Landreth) Moore, preceded him in death May 19, 1998.  He is buried in Richwoods Cemetery in Corning.

DENA ENGLEHAUPT, 86, of Granville, Ill., died Dec. 28, 1999.  She was born Sept. 22, 1913, in Mark, Ill., a daughter of the late Joseph and Eda Moscardini Paganelli.  Interment was in Sacred Heart Cemetery there.

MEN IN SERVICE...  Army Private Doyle W. Guilliams, son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Guilliams, Route 1, Ravenden, recently was assigned to the 17th Field Artillery at Fort Sill, Okla....  Airman Hal K. Bryant, son of Robert N. Bryant of Rt. 1, Corning, has graduated from the U.S. Air Force munitions maintenance course at Lowry AFB, Colo.  His mother, Mrs. Shirley J. Bryant, resides on Rt. 1, Pocahontas....  Stephen Wayne Cassidy, Kevin W. McCullough and Charles Wayne Fortson have enlisted in the U.S. Air Force's Delayed Enlistment Program.  Cassidy is a senior at Maynard High School and McCullough and Fortson are seniors at Biggers-Reyno High School.

MEN IN SERVICE...  Sgt. Frank W. Gunn was promoted to Staff-Sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps in Korea. --- Sgt. Charles E. Lamb was a member of an Air Force crew which recovered the bodies of 28 persons from a mountainside in
Arizona. --- Seaman First Class Billy Jack Harris has returned to his ship, the USS Montrose in California after a 5-day leave with his parents. --- Pfc. Billie Joe Henson enjoyed a weekend pass and spent it here with his mother, Mrs. Marvin Waymon. --- Pvt. Bobbie Jean Henson is now en route to Korea.

The local draft board forwarded four registrants to Little Rock today for re-examination.  They are Coy Cato, Burley Dalton, Rawleigh Rogers and Oral K. Carson.

Mrs. Margery Elizabeth Stone, 79, died at her home on the Dalton Route Sunday.

Mrs. Hattie Edrington, 77, died at her home in Pocahontas Thursday.

Terry and Rufe Waldron opened a new grocery store on the corner of Marr and Pyburn Streets, opposite the opera house.

Mr. and Mrs. Lucian Dean of Old Union ar the proud parents of a fine baby girl, born Jan. 7.

Mr. and Mrs. Jewel Starling of Fairview announce the arrival of a fine baby boy, born Wednesday.

OBITUARIES

GALE BENNETT, 94, of Pocahontas, died Jan. 5, 2000, at his residence.  Born April 2, 1905, near Fender, he was a son of the late Thomas and Zona (Holmes) Bennett.  A lifetime resident of Randolph County, he is survived by his wife, Gladys Wheeless Bennett.  He is buried in Randolph Memorial Gardens.

GOLDIE MARIE MILLER, 88, of Bradford, died Jan. 5. 2000, at White County Medical Center in Searcy.  She was born May 8, 1911, in Joplin, MO, a daughter of the late Fred and Mary Jane (Smith) Stacy.  Her husband, Thomas Clay Miller, preceded her in death.  She is buried in Masonic Cemetery.

SALLIE MAE CHESSER, 78, of Search, died Jan. 4, 2000, in Oakdale Nursing Center in Judsonia.  Born at Sedgwick to George and Jannie Davis, she resided in Walnut Ridge, and then in Pocahontas, for 30 years before moving to Search in 1991.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond chesser, in 1992, and is buried in Chesser Cemetery near Noland.

ROBERT E. (BOB) PYLAND, 69, of Springfield, MO., died Monday, Jan. 3, 2000, in St. John's Regional Health center there.  He was born April 13, 1930, at Noland, a son of the late P.E. and Gladys Louise HOlmes Pyland.  He was well-known in Missouri, Arkansas, and the Southern States as a professional trainer of Tennessee Walking horses.  In addition to his parents, two brothers, Joe and Danny Earl Pyland, also preceded him in death.  He is survived by his wife, Heidi; a son, Bobby Joe Pyland, and a step-son, Barry Lee, all of the home; two daughters, Debbie Horine of Sringfield, and Becky Davis of Marshfield, MO.; two sons, Rob Pyland, and Dan Pyland, both of Ozark, MO; four grandchildren; two sisters, Mignon Smith of Black Rock, and Phyllis Kyger of St. Louis, MO; and a brother, Ed Pyland of Napa, Calif. Funeral services were held Jan. 6 in Walnut Lawn DeGraffenreid-Wood Funeral Home Chapel in Springfield.  Burial followed in Patterson Cemetery there.  Submitted by his daughter, Becky Pyland Davis.

JUNE AGNES MAYLAND, 89, a resident of Walnut Ridge, formerly of Strawberry, died Jan. 9, 2000, at Lawrence Hall Nursing Center in Walnut Ridge.  She was born May 4, 1911, in Saffel.  she was the daughter of Dan and Ida (Hoggard)
Eagan.  She married Harvey cline Mayland on June 4, 1928, in Lynn.  Funeral services were arranged by Higginbotham Funeral Home in Walnut Ridge.

NEWS OF MEN IN SERVICE....  Mr. and Mrs. J.O. Allison of Dalton received a letter from their son, Pvt. william A. Allison, who is a Chinese prisoner of  war...  Sfc. James E. Hoelscher of Pocahontas hs been promoted to the rank of Master Sergeant in Headquarters Company, 142nd Field Artillery...  T-Sgt. S.L. Bounds, son of Mr. and Mrs. L.A. Bounds has recently been promoted to the rank of Master Sergeant in the U.S. Air Force...  Sgt. Hugh Barham of the 6th Air Postal Squadron and his brother, Cpl. Grover M. Barham of the U.S. Marine Corps, were on leaves and spent the holiday with relatives at O'Kean.

Mrs. Elizabeth Fowler Redwine, 83, died at her home at Maynard Friday.

Andrew McCarroll, 72, Lawrence County farmer and retired automobile dealer, died at his home at Black Rock Thursday.

Mrs. Rosetta Cox, aged 51, passed away at her home here Thursday.

Mrs. Anna DeClerk Baltz, aged 51, died in St. Bernard's Hospital, Jonesboro, Tuesday.

Mr. and Mrs. John Johnson of Shannon were the parents of a big 11 pound baby boy.

Born to Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Mays of Manson, Saturday, a 9 pound baby boy.

OBITUARIES

PATSY RUTH BYRD, 59, of Imboden, died Jan. 15, 2000.  Born at Imboden, she resided in Pocahongas before moving back to the Imboden area.  Her parents were the late Eugene and Mabel Stratton.  She is survived by her husband, James R. Byrd, and is buried in Hope Cemetery near Imboden.

JOHN LLOYD DOVER, 57, of Williford, died Jan. 15, 2000, at Eastern Ozarks Regional Health System in Cherokee Village.  He was born April 12, 1942, in Greenfield, a son of the late Huler and Daisy (Lillard) Dover.  He is survived by his wife, Carol Ann Baldridge Dover, and is buried in Perry Cemetery near Williford.

CHARLES ROLAND COOK, 79, of Pocahontas, died Jan. 12, 2000.  He was born in Chicago, IL., on Sept. 30, 1920, a son of the late Roland and Lenore Hogan cook.  He was a veteran of WWII, receiving several awards and medals, including a Purple Heart.  He is survived by his wife, Bonnie D. Cook and was buried in Masonic Cemetery with the VFW Post 4556 Honor Guard conducting military honers at the gravesite.

VIRGIE ANN (MOORE) NEWSOM, 74, of Fayetteville, died at Washington Regional Medical Center in Fayetteville, Jan. 12, 2000.  She was born Feb. 13, 1925, near Success, a daughter of the late Charles and Georgia Pepper Moore.  Her husband, James William Newsom Sr., preceded her in death.  She is buried in Corning cemetery.

HAROLD H. STRINGER, 82, of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., died Dec. 22, 1999.  He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Martha Stringer.  He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Gladys Surles Stringer, and is buried in Beal Memorial Cemetery there.

LILLY MAY BAKER, 80, of Malvern, died Jan. 12, 2000, in Hot Spring County Medical Center.  She was born Feb. 3, 1919, to Andy and vaner Jones Manis in Elijah, Mo.  She is buried in Antioch Cemetery near Pocahontas.

THELMA BARTHENE TAYLOR, 74, of Waterford, Mich., died Jan. 11, 2000, at Lourdes Nursing Home there.  She was born Aug. 16, 1925 in Pocahontas, a daughter of the late Shelby Otto and Eular Elizabeth Banks Wicker.  She is survived by her husband, Buddie Frank Taylor, and is buried in Masonic Cemetery.

RUTH ANN REDUS, 50, of Cattle creek Road, Pocahontas, died Jan 15, 2000, at St. Bernard's Regional Medical Center, Jonesboro.  She was born dec. 25, 1949, in Pocahontas, a daughter of Edsel and Margie Lee (Thompson) Ballard. She is buried in Spikes Cemetery.

OBITUARIES

A.L. "PETE" McFALL, 92, of Pocahontas, died Jan. 20, 2000, at Randolph County Medical Center.  Born July 31, 1907, in Annapolis, MO, he was a son of the late John and Estella (Palmer) McFall.  His wife, Edna Watson McFall, also preceded him in death.  He is buried in Randolph Memorial Gardens.

JESS ROGERS, of Pocahontas, died Jan 18, 2000, in Baptist Central Hospital, Memphis, TN.  He was born June 6, 1927, near Corning, a son of the late Willby and Della (Ray) Rogers.  He is survived by his wife, Karen Hollaway Rogers and is buried in Lawrence Memorial Park in Walnut Ridge.

PEARLIE JANE GALBREATH, 95, of Pocahontas, died Jan. 14, 2000.  She was born at Richwoods, June 17, 1904, a daughter of the late Lewis and Lou Hall Galbreath.  She is buried in Randolph Memorial Gardens.

LOUISE SMITH EASON, 68, of Pocahontas, died Jan. 18, 2000, in Regional Medical Center of NE Arkansas, Jonesboro.  She was born Oct. 14, 1931, in Black Oak, a daughter of the late Frank and Lizzie (Ball) Miller.  She is survived by her husband, thurman Eason and is buried in Masonic Cemetery.

C. E. "BUCK" ROUSH, 74, of Pocahontas, died Jan. 16, 2000.  He was born Sept. 17, 1925, a son of the late Otis and Florence Riley Roush.  He served his country as a navy Sea Bee during WWII and was a member of the Eastern Star and a 32nd Degree Mason.  His is survived by his wife, Joyce Roush, and is buried in Masonic Cemetery, where graveside military services were conducted.

ISHMAL R. SHEPHERD, 71, of Lincoln, Ill., died Jan. 2, 2000, at Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital in Lincoln.  He was born may 17, 1928, at Supply, a son of the late Oraus and Wonda Allison Shepherd.  He married Lois Nail on Nov. 3, 1948, in Ravenden, who survives him.  He is buried at Oakview Cemetery in Armington, Ill.

ROSA LEA JACKSON, 94, of Reyno, died Jan. 22, 2000, at Pocahontas Nursing and Rehab Center.  She was born June 14, 1905, in Randolph County.  Her husband, Earl Jackson, preceded her in death.  She is buried in Johnston Cemetery near Reyno.

IVA CHRISTINA KERLEY, 92, of Maynard, died Jan. 23, 2000, in Randolph County medical Center.  She was born April 26, 1908, near Maynard, a daughter of the late James Conway and Elizabeth Alice (Carroll) Jarrett.  Her husband, Otis Byron Kerley, also preceded her in death.  she is buried in Jarrett Cemetery near Maynard.

JAMES C. KERLEY, 54, of Maynard, died Jan. 18, 2000.  He was born Dec. 22, 1945, in Maynard, a son of the late Otis and Iva Kerley.  He is survived by his wife, Enola Kerley.  His body was cremated, with Cox-Waymon Funeral Home of Pocahontas in charge of arrangements.

JOHN DEE CASTEEL, of Rock Island, Ill., died Jan. 17, 2000 at the Tulsa, Okla. Cancer Center.  He was born May 23, 1929, at Shirley, a son of the late Carl and Ethel Brown Casteel.  She was a veteran of the Korean Conflict and also served in Japan.  He is buried in Sutton Cemetery.

LeROY STONE, 73, of Russellville, formerly of Pocahontas, died Jan. 23, 2000, at St. Mary's Regional Medical Center there.  A son of the late Marion E. and Lillian Beatrice Greer Stone, he was born July 19, 1926, at Chase, Kan.  He was a decorated U.S. Army veteran of WWII, receiving a Bronze Star while serving overseas.  He is survived by his wife, Orella "Sunny" Stone, and is buried in Rest Haven Memorial Park in Russellville.

The local draft board forwarded eight registrants to Little Rock yesterday for Armed Forces physical examinations.  They were:  Walter L. White, Cloyce E. Odom, John O. Washam, Billie G. Nelson, Billy R. Jones, Guthrie Parrish, Billy Cremeens and Weir R. Swann.

NEWS OF MEN IN SERVICE...  ---Cpl. and Mrs. Oliver Kerfoot Jr. arrived here last week and are enjoying a visit with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Kerfoot, Sr., and sister, Miss Wanda, and with her parents, the Rev. and Mrs. Curtis O. Bryant and family of Paragould.  Cpl. Kerfoot has been stationed at Camp Edwards, Mass., for the past 10 months. ---  Mr. and Mrs. Tom Getson of O'Kean have receivedword that their son, Thomas C. Getson, has been promoted to the rank of corporal while serving in the Army in Korea. ---  Sgt. Theron R. Rice, son of Mr. and Mrs. Homer Rice, has has just completed a course at Fort Benning, Georgia. --- Undergoing recruit training at the U.S. Naval Training Center, San Diego, Calif., is Billie
Castleman, Seaman recruit, USN, of Pocahontas. ---  Pvt. Ernest Sorg, Route 2, Pocahontas, recently arrived in Japan from Korea with the 1st Cavalry Division. ---  Pfc. Donald L. Roberts, whose wife, the former Miss Betty Crapo, resides on Route 1, Walnut Ridge, is now serving as a clerk at a headquarters in Korea.

William Robert Haney, aged 66, died at his home in O'Kean Jan. 26.

Frank J. Richardson, aged 33 of St. Louis, died in a hospital there January 24.

Mrs. Mary Arena Robinson Wisner, aged 80, died at her home at Reyno Saturday.

Rev. W. L. Oliver, aged 80, former pastor of the First Methodist Church in Pocahontas, died in a Memphis hospital Sunday.

Jeff Gentry, aged 48, died in St. Louis Wednesday.
 

IN THE LONG, LONG AGO, from files of Feb. 2, 1928
County Agent W.B. Proctor says the time will soon be here when farmers who are planning to use commercial fertilizer should be deciding what kind and the amount they are going to use.  He recommends 12-4-4 for hill cotton and 10-4-4 for the bottoms section and Cherokee Bay section.

There will be an avoirdupois box supper at the Noland School February 9th. Women, weigh and bring a box.  Men, bring money.

DEBRA LYNN JOHNSON, 37, of Little Rock, formerly of Pocahontas, died Jan. 27, 2000, at the Univ. of Ark Med Center.  Born April 12, 1962, in Pocahontas, she was a daughter of Wiley Marion and Dora Bell (Cannon) Johnson of Pocahontas.  She is buried in Masonic Cemetery.

HARRY A. ROSS, 77, of Pocahontas, formerly of Waterloo, Iowa, died Jan. 24, 2000, at Regional Medical Center in Jonesboro.  He was born May 10, 1922 in Innisfail, Alberta, Canada, a son of the late Thomas A. and Elsie G. Cook Ross.  He is survived by his wife, Joyce M. Ross, and is buried in Garden of Memories Cemetery in Waterloo.

LULA GRAHAM McILROY, 103, of Pocahontas, died Jan. 27, 2000, at Pocahontas Nursing & Rehab Center.  She was born Jan. 4, 1897, in Lees Chapel, Ark., a daughter of the late James and Joan (Tatum) Graham.  She is buried in Masonic Cemetery.

CHARLES A. WELLS, JR., 66, of Rockton, Ill., died Jan. 1, 2000, at Fair Oaks Health Care Center there.  Born June 12, 1933 in Walnut Ridge, he was a son of Charles A. Sr. and Effie Agnes (Finley) Wells.  He married Patsy E. Eubank in Pocahontas on Dec. 31, 1953.  He was an army veteran and is buried in Sunset Memorial Gardens there.

MARION FRANCIS BLACKBURN, 80, of Biggers, died Jan. 25, 2000, in Randolph Home.  She was born March 18, 1919, in Biggers, a daughter of the late Harry Houston and Eunice (Morrow) Hensley.  Her husband, Elmer "Bill" Blackburn,
also preceded her in death.  She is buried in Randolph Memorial Gardens.

RALPH JOHNSON, JR., 76, of Pocahontas, died Jan. 28, 2000, in the Regional Medical Center of NE Ark, Jonesboro.  He was born Jan. 9, 1924, in Cherry  Valley, a son of the late Ralph Sr. and Annie Barkley Johnson.  He is survived by his wife, Gertrude Thornberry Johnson, and is buried in Chesser Cemetery near Pocahontas.

HARRY LEE "WOLF" DUNN, 62, of Corning, died Jan. 31, 2000, at Doctors Regional Medical Center in Poplar Bluff, Mo.  Born March 4, 1937 in Reyno, a son of Clifford Otto "Tip" Dunn and Minnie Lee (Sanders) Dunn.  He is buried
in Williams Cemetery in Corning.

Damon Jones, son of T.A. Jones of Pocahontas, was promoted to Army Specialist Four, Jan. 9, while serving with the 197th Infantry Brigade at Fort Benning, GA.

Shell.  The following were volunteers for immediate induction:  Ray E. Morris, Loyd Blackwell and Auduel Clark. Billy Joe Swan has been promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant while serving in Puerto Rico. Roy Baker, fire controlman second class, USN is serving aborad the landing ship USS Gunston Hall with the UN Blockading and Escort Force off the coast of Korea.

Mrs. E. E. Ensor, 57, died at her home in Lordsburg, NM, Sunday.

Grove Cleveland Clary, 55, of Ravenden, died Feb. 2.

Jeff Gentry, 48, died in St. Louis Wednesday of last week.

James Arnold, aged 63, died at his home near Delaplaine this morning.

John W. Vermilye, aged 92, died in St. Louis Tuesday.

At the election held in Pocahontas Tuesday to draw in the city limits, the vote was unanimously in favor.  The property to be excluded from the city limits is all the territory east of the west bank of Black River and all that territory east of the west side of Highway No. 67 from the creek below the high school property to the northern city limits.  This will save the city $30,000 by making the state responsible for the building and maintenance of Highway No. 67.

VIVAL GLADYS SEAWEL, 84, of Maynard, died Feb. 5, 2000.  She was born June 20, 1915, near Ingram, a daughter of the late Jacob Marion and Mary Ellen Hawk Elkins Condict.  She was a descendant of Randolph County pioneers Byrum Condict, John Shaver, Henry Waddle, Franklin Hawk and James Bigger.  She is survived by her husband, Quimby Seawel, and is buried in Palestine Cemetery.

JESSIE EVELYN O'DELL, 84, of Pocahontas, died Feb. 2, 2000, at Randolph Home.  She was born Feb. 12, 1915, near Portia, a daughter of the late William Cam and Katie (Hancock) Helms.  She is buried in Masonic Cemetery.

JIM BELL, 89, of Pocahontas, died Feb. 5, 2000, at Randolph Home.  He was born April 24, 1910, a son of the late John and Bertha (Cook) Bell.  He is survived by his wife, Lena Bell, and is buried in Wells Cemetery.

SHIRLEE HUCKABEE GOFF, 80, of Pocahontas, died Feb. 2, 2000, at Regional Medical Center of NE Ark, Jonesboro.  She was born may 13, 1919, in Randolph County, a daughter of the late Charles H. and Maggie (Dean) Haynes.  She is survived by her husband, Woodrow Goff, and is buried in Randolph Memorial Gardens.

EMMA P. BELL LUCAS, 95, of Ravenden, died Feb. 3, 2000, at Fulton County Hospital in Salem.  She was born Jan. 2, 1905, in Watertown, NY, the eldest daughter of Harry Bell and Ellen (Nellie) Tenney Bell.  She married Arthur A. Lucas on Sept. 27, 1927, in Toledo, Ohio, and they were married 47 years until his death.  Graveside services were held at Jeff Cemetery in Oregon County, MO.

ZANIEL FRANKLIN DEAN, 82, of O'Kean, died Feb. 6, 2000, at St. Bernards Regional Medical Center in Jonesboro.  He was born Sept. 28, 1917, in Pocahontas, a son of the late James Robert and Nellie Katherine (Shelton) Dean.  He is survived by his wife, Martha Artie Burgess Dean, and is buried in Randolph Memorial Gardens.

A new baby girl arrived at the home of Matt Luter in Old Reyno. Chas. Nicks is the new clerk in Smith's Drug Store in Biggers. The highway from Biggers, north, is in the first stage of construction. Many men and teams are at work every day.  All obstacles have been removed and a dump thrown up.  Detouring is necessary and we feel that, after all these years of waiting, sometime a highway may run through Cherokee Bay.

OBITUARIES

JAMES L. (SAM) DICKSON, 78, of Black Rock, died Feb. 9, 2000, at the Veterans Hospital in Little Rock.  He was born on Jan 19, 1922 in Ravenden, a son of the late William J. and Elsie (Dent) Dickson.  He was united in marriage to Cleda (Knauss) Dickson, Feb. 19, 1943 and she survives him.  He was a WWII Army Veteran and is buried at Pleasant Grove  Cemetery near Annieville.

LEVADA MAE ROBINSON, 69, of Pocahontas, died Feb. 11, 2000, at her home. Born May 3, 1930, in Pocahontas, she was a daughter of Theo (Lott) Hogan Spohrer of Vancouver, Wash., and the late Fred Hogan.  She is survived by her husband, Rev. Lowell Robinson, and is buried in Randolph Memorial Gardens.

LEO THIELEMIER, 79, of Memphis, Tenn., formerly of Pocahontas, died Feb. 8, 2000, at Baptist East in Memphis.  Born Oct. 31, 1920, he was a son of the late Will and Katharine Ungerank Thielemier of Pocahontas.  He was a World War II Army Air Corps veteran, a member of the St. Louis Catholic Church, ad a 4th Degree member of the Knights of columbus.  He was owner and manager of Safety Lights Inc. of Memphis, until his recent retirement, when his three sons took over the business.  He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Bernice Junkersfeld Thielemier of the home; three sons, Michael Thielemier,
Curt Thielemier and Steve Thielemier, all of Memphis; four brothers, Andy Thielemier of St. Louis, MO., and Raymond Thielemier, Dick Thielemier and Bob Thielemier all of Pocahontas; a sister, Wilma Wren of Pocahontas and seven grandchildren.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers and an infant sister.  Funeral services were held Feb. 11 at St. Louis Catholic Church in Memphis with Father James Carroll of Shelby, Tenn., officiating.  He was assisted by several close priest friends of the Memphis area.  Sister Henrietta Hockle, O.S.B., of Jonesboro, did the readings at the Mass.  Entombment was at Memorial Park Mausoleum in Memphis. Pallbearers were his nephews, Wayne, Dennis, Doug and Gregg Thielemier, Steve Wren, Andy Lloyd, Dr. Tom Elmore, John Elmore, Jerry Junkersfeld and Joe Booker.  Submitted by Bridgette Jansen Cohen.

EARL BAILEY of Beach Grove, formerly of Warm Springs, died Feb. 14, 2000.  He is buried at Mt. Zion Cemetery, Walcott.

Christopher John Steimel, 23, died Feb. 8 in Rogers.  He was a 1994 graduate of Pocahontas High School and was valedictorian of his graduating class.  He was born March 8, 1976, and is the son of Hugh Jr. and Theresa Steimel of Pocahontas.  He is survived by his wife, Stephanie Steimel of Fayetteville and is buried in St. Paul's Cemetery, Pocahontas.

Bobby Joe Davis, 12-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Davis or Reyno, drowned in Current River about 9:30 Monday morning after the automobile he was driving plunged off the ferry boat at Richardson's Ferry.

NEWS OF MEN IN SERVICE...  Commissaryman Howard E. Leach, USN, and his wife, Nancy, are the parents of a baby born Jan. 26, at the US Naval Hospital in Memphis, TN. Pvt. Virgil E. Ingram has started training at the Ordinance Replacement Center.  Two Maynard men, Clark D. Lincoln and Paul J. Killough, are undergoing recruit training at the US Naval Training Center in San Diego, CA.

Essie Mae Garland, 14-day-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Garland of Biggers, died at Randolph County Memorial Hospital Friday.

Mrs. Minnie Alice Kercheval, aged 81, died at her home in Pocahontas, Feb. 15.

Alfred Norman has sold the Attica store and post office to Raymond Elkins. --- Attica News.

About four inches of snow fell here Saturday, making it the second snow of the winter.  The first one fell Nov. 1 and was about three inches deep. --- Ravenden Springs News.

C.J. STEIMEL, infant son of Christopher J. and Stephanie L. Jones Steimel of Fayetteville, died Feb. 8, 2000, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rogers.  He was born Feb. 12, 1999, in Colorado Springs, Colo.  Survivors include his mother; grandparents, Hugh and Theresa Steimel of Pocahontas; Debbie and Steve Goines of Rogers, and Larry and Linda Jones of Westville, Okla.; also great-grandparents, Frances Steimel, Walter and Pat Green, all of Pocahontas, Luther and Donna Jones of Westville, and Veda Goines of Bentonville.  He is buried in Rogers Cemetery.

JOHN CHARLES "J.C." HOGGARD, 72, of Pocahontas, died Feb. 19, 2000, at Central Arkansas Hospital in Searcy.  He was born may 15, 1927, in Calamine, a son of the late John Newton and Ruby Mae (Brown) Hoggard.  He is survived by his wife, Betty Jane (Thompson) Hoggard, and is buried in Randolph Memorial Gardens.

THOMAS EUGENE HARPER, 79, of Pocahontas, a former resident of Maynard, died Feb. 15, 2000, at St. Bernards Regional Medical Center in Jonesboro.  He was born Sept. 3, 1920, near Stokes, a son of the late George Thomas and Laura
Mae (Davis) Harper.  His wife, Nancy Lucille Kerley Harper, also preceded him in death.  He is buried in Maynard Cemetery.

LENA ARLENE STARLING, 85, of Pocahontas, died Feb. 18, 2000, at St. Bernards Regional Medical Center, Jonesboro.  She was born July 24, 1914, in Randolph County, a daughter of the late Tom and Annie (Galbraith) Horsman.  Her husband of 65 years, Glen Starling, also preceded her in death.  She is buried in Hope Cemetery near Imboden.

THELMA ROZELL LAMBERT, 85, of 3876 Hwy. 251, Pocahontas, died Saturday, Feb. 19, 2000, at Randolph County Medical Center.  She was born June 28, 1914, in Randolph County, a daughter of the late Peter Simpson and Melinda "Dolly" (Golden) Tyler.  Her husband, John Benjamin Lambert, sons Jerome, Dennis, Wendell and John Lambert, brothers, Henry, Carl, Harvie, Bill, Amos and Hardy Tyler and a sister, Maudie Bickers, also preceded her in death.  She is survived by three sons, Dean Lambert, Elby Lambert and Charles Lambert, all of Pocahontas; two daughters, Lois Wantland and Barbara Lacy, also of Pocahontas; a sister, Lola Ingram of Senath, MO; 14 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.  Funeral services were held Monday in the Chapel of McNabb Funeral Home with Jame Knotts officiating.  Burial followed in Masonic Cemetery.  Pallbearers were Bill Rapert, Dean Lambert, Jr., Jim and Tony McCall, Jamie Sanders and Chris Lambert.  Submitted by her granddaughter, Rebecca Lambert.

RAY NORMAN BEGY, 86, of Maynard, died Feb. 20, 2000.  He was born May 25, 1913, in Chicago, a son of the late Frederick and Bertha Unruh Begy.  He served his country in WWII as a Marine.  He is survived by his wife, Irene Begy, and is buried in Maynard Cemetery.

WILLIAM CLARK COX, 98, of Maynard, died Feb. 19, 2000, in Randolph County Convalescent Center, Pocahontas.  He was born Jan. 28, 1902, at Supply, and had been a lifetime resident of Randolph County.  On April 28, 1923, at Corning, he married Irene Carter, who preceded him in death on Oct. 16, 1984.  He is buried in Macedonia Cemetery.

AUDREY ELIZABETH (SELLERS) POTEET, 93, a resident of the Pocahontas Nursing and Rehab Center and a former life-time resident of Imboden, died Feb. 20, at the Home.  Born Feb. 22, 1906 at Imboden, she was the daughter of William
Charles and Mary Susan (Compton) Sellers.  She was also preceded in death by her husband, Onie Lee Poteet on March 9, 1993.  She is buried in Hope Cemetery at Imboden.

WILLIAM HUGH HIGGINS, 71, OF Pocahontas, died Feb. 19, 2000, at Randolph County Medical Center.  He was born Sept. 3, 1928, in Greene County, a son of the late Hugh D. and Jessie (Hollifield) Higgins.  He is survived by his wife, Mary Lou (Dean) Higgins, and is buried in Randolph Memorial Gardens. 

WAYMON E. ALLEN, 71, of Reyno, died Feb. 16, 2000.  He was born Oct. 29, 1928, in Walnut Ridge, a son of the late Clarence and Addie Magie Allen.  He is survived by his wife, Louise Allen of Reyno, and is buried in Maynard Cemetery.
 

24 YEARS AGO, from files of Feb. 26, 1976.
Tornadic Winds Hit County...  A storm swept through Randolph County at approximately 1:30 Saturday morning damaging property in many parts of the county and injuring several persons.  A large portion of the Skylark Drive-In Theater screen was torn away, mobile homes occupied by the Gene Gentry and "Fats" Waller families at O'Kean were destroyed as was a mobile
home near Old Davidsonville State Park.  The home occupied by the Gene Cullum family at O'Kean was picked up from its foundation by high winds, then deposited intact on the ground nearby.  Other homes in Pocahontas, on Highway 304 and Highway 90 South were also damaged.

A fire Wednesday morning totally destroyed the Ozark Freight Lines Terminal in the East Gate Plaza.  The 2,400 square-foot steel building was engulfed in flames when Pocahontas volunteer firemen arrived in response to an alarm at 8:50 am.

Mr. and Mrs. W.H.Gregory of Attica received word Friday that their son, J.D. Gregory, had been killed in an automobile crash near Plainview, Texas.

Fire of undetermined origin totally destroyed the Seagraves and Jackson sale barn in Pocahontas about 9:30 Tuesday night.

Mrs. Evelyn Sisson, aged 71, died at the home of a stepdaughter in Kennett, MO., Monday.

Mrs. Elvira McDonald, 72, died at her nephew's home at Attica Tuesday.

Preston Skaggs is at home on a 30-day furlough after serving overseas for Uncle Sam. --- West Ingram News.

Howard Rapert of Maynard has been signed to a St. Louis Cardinal contract. Rapert has three years experience with the Maynard High School squad and tossed a one-hit game last season in high school competition.

Billy Templeton has been chosen with 43 other boys as a member of the All-American Football team.

Harold Miller, who has been stationed on Adak Island for the past 15 months, has received his discharge and is now at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Miller. --- Gladesville News.

Wear K. Schoonover of Pocahontas won two very distinctive honors at the University of Arkansas.  Besides his proficiency in athletics, Wear was one of 15 sophomores who made the honor roll during the first semester.  He was ranked as a "superior student." 

Born to Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Bradley of Maynard, a daughter named Frances Lucille on Feb. 27.

FANNIE ERA BROADWAY, 71, of Pocahontas, died March 4, 2000, at her residence. She was born March 10, 1928, in the Holmes Community, a daughter of the late James Frank and Winnie Nell (James) Ellis, She is survived by her husband, Jerrell Broadway and is buried in Randolph Memorial Gardens.

ROSE ETHEL WAGNER, 89, of Pocahontas, died Feb. 29, 2000, at St. Bernards Regional Medical Center in Jonesboro, AR. Born Nov. 25, 1910 in Pocahontas, she was a daughter of the late Frank and Anna (Holenstine) Junkersfeld. Her husband, George Wagner, preceded her in death. She is buried in Sutton
Cemetery.

LEAMON ENGLAND, 79, of Bonne Terre, MO, died Feb. 25, 2000. He was born June 13, 1920, a son of the late Porter and Amy Brewer England. He is buried in Walnut Grove Cemetery near Elm Store.

EXIE M. HUDDLESTON, 88, of Lawrenceville, Ill., a former Pocahontas resident, died Thursday, March 2, 2000, at United Methodist Village in Lawrenceville. She was born Feb. 24, 1912, in Pocahontas, a daughter of the late Hardy and Malinda Jackson Tyler. Her first husband, Golmon Wooldridge, and her second husband, Ed Huddleston, a brother, and a sister also preceded her in death. She was a member of the Northside Free Will Baptist Church. She is survived by a daughter, Fern Waggoner of Lawrenceville; two brothers, Bernie Tyler of Fairfield, Ill., and Woodrow Tyler of West Salem, Ill.; one grandchild and one greag-grandchild. Funeral services were held Sunday at Northside Free Will Baptist Church in Pocahontas. Burial was in Masonic Cemetery here.  (FULL OBITUARY)

LILLIAN LOUVANNA SAMONS, 88, of Maynard, died March 1, 2000, at Randolph County Medical Center. She was born Oct. 22, 1911, in Lesterville, AR, a daughter of the late George Washington and Amanda Jane (Davidson) Jones.  Her husband, Owen Samons, preceded her in death. She is buried in Ingram Cemetery.

OPAL IMOGENE JENKINS, 74, of Pocahontas, died March 3, 2000, at Hendersonville Hospital in Hendersonville, TN. She was born Jan. 30, 1926, near Warm Springs, a daughter of the late John and Dessie (Pickrum) Looney. She is buried in Randolph Memorial Gardens.

LINNA MAE (INGRAM) CUNNINGHAM, 69, of Tulsa, OK, died March 5, 2000. Born March 16, 1930 in Warm Springs, she is the daughter of the late Della Rosetta Coe and James Floyd Ingram. She and her husband moved to Oklahoma 41 years ago where they made their home in West Tulsa and Jenks. She
married Gordon Adrian Cunningham, who survives her, on Sept. 20, 1947 in Pocahontas. She is buried in Calvary Cemetery in Tulsa.

STEVEN KENDALL WILSON, 49, of Hermitage, TN, died March 2, 2000. He is survived by his wife, Ruth Anne Wilson, his parents, J.B. and Marion Wilson; his grandmother, Stella Allen; and father and mother-in-law, Sam and Syble Brown. He is buried in Hermitage Memorial Gardens there.

TROY DALE McINTIRE, 28, of Pocahontas, died Feb. 29, 2000. He was born in Little Rock Sept. 5, 1971, a son of James and Marilyn McCoy of Pocahontas.  He is also survived by his wife, Michele McIntire and is buried in Chesser Cemetery.

CARL HAMLIN, SR., 87, of Brookings, died March 3, 2000. He was born Nov. 1, 1912, near Sharum, a son f the late Jim and Mattie (Pickett) Hamlin. He is survived by his wife, Willie Mae (Higginbotham) Hamlin and is buried in Pirtle Cemetery.

The Martin & Fisher Agency, local insurance firm, celebrated its 20th anniversary in march.

Little Max Rhea Hamm, son of Mr. and Mrs. Crawford Hamm of Middlebrook, was badly burned when he fell into the fire. His burns were treated by Dr. Finney of Maynard, then he was taken to Poplar Bluff for further treatment.

Mr. and Mrs. Ed Reed of Gladesville were the proud parents of a new girl.

OBITUARIES

EURSKIN EUGENE MELTON, 75, of 2347 Biggers-Reyno road, Biggers, died Thursday, March 9, 2000, at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau, MO. He was born Dec. 23, 1924, near Biggers, a son of the late George Washington and Clara (Bay) Melton. He was a retired farmer. A son, Steve Melton, and a grandchild also preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife, Mary Frances Melton of the home; seven sons, Kevin Dorris of Van Buren, Mo.; Darrell Melton of Maynard; Wayne Melton of Durham, NC; and Joe Melton, Danny Peoples, Gene Peoples and Len Peoples, all of Pocahontas; seven daughters, Pat Cato of Alma, Janice Judd of Lafe, Sharon Ross of Pocahontas, Tina Templeman of Biggers, Melinda Maxwell of Centerville, MO, and Samantha Melton and Jamie Newton, both of the home; three sisters, Arlene King of st. Louis, MO, Christine Riney of DeSoto, MO, and Retha Marie White of Oklahoma City, Okla; 30 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Monday in the Chapel of McNabb Funeral Home with Larry rogers officiating. Burial was in Overby Cemetery near Maynard. Pallbearers were James Melton, Tim Blackwell, Mike Layton, Greg Melton, Brian Judd and Joe Turner. (FULL OBITUARY)

AUBREY BROOKS, 77, of Pomona, Calif., died March 12, 2000, at Christian Heritage Care Center, in Upland, Calif. She was born June 16, 1922, near Water Valley in Randolph County. Her parents were the late James Myrton and Virginia Mae Perrin Blansett. She is buried in Pomona Valley Memorial Park there.

CORRECTION... The following has been added to the obituary of March 2, of Leamon England who died Feb. 25, 2000. His wife, Ilean (Johnson) England; a son, Jerry England; a brother, Freamon England of Dalton' and a sister, Beatrice Holder of Overland, MO, all preceded him in death. He is buried in Walnut Grove Cemetery, south of Myrtle, MO.

24 YEARS AGO (from files of March 18, 1976)
Ten police cadets received graduation certificates March 10 in ceremonies at Black River Vo-Tech School. They are Gary Collins of Ravenden Springs, Randy Weisenbach, Larry Ewing and David Rodgers of Maynard, and Bill Masiongale, Dwaine Reeves, David Steimel, Charles Grant and Glen DeClerk of
Pocahontas.

Workmen replacing porches, steps and sidewalks leading into the Old Randolph County Courthouse found a portion of the old fence that once surrounded the courtyard being used as a reinforcement for the porch. The Restoration Committee planned to replace the old fence, but until now, no one had been able to give an accurate description of the fence.

MEN IN SERVICE... Airman A. Guarnett, son of Mr. and Mrs. Hershell G. Guarnett of Pocahontas, has graduated from the Air Training Command's basic course for electronic specialists at Keesler Air Force Base, Miss.

DEATHS... Roscoe Lee, 75, Rt. 5, Pocahontas; Mrs. Oriole Bishop, 72, Rt. 4, Pocahontas.

Mrs. Alice Pulliam, 77, died at her home in Warm Springs March 17.

Mrs. Beulah Wagner, aged 51, died at her home in Delaplaine Tuesday.

Ed Million, 70, died at this home on Route 2, Sunday.

William Henry Lacey, 65, well-known Warm Spring's farmer died in Veteran's Hospital in Little Rock March 14.

Uriah Shepard, age 71, died at his daughter's home in Pocahontas Friday.

Janice Potter, 6-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Potter, was the winner of the mystery song over KPOC Sunday. PETTIT NEWS.

OBITUARIES

JOHN DAVID "J.D." GRAHAM, 70, of Pocahontas, died March 19, 2000, at St. Bernards Regional Medical Center in Jonesboro. He was born Dec. 16, 1920, near Hoxie, a son of the late Paul Marion and Mary Ann (Smith) Graham. He was the former owner and manager of Graham's Stores and a former manager of Van Atkins here. He is survived by his wife, Fannie Jackson Graham and is buried in Randolph Memorial Gardens.

WOODROW HANFORD CAMPBELL, 83, of Pocahontas, died March 18, 2000, at Pocahontas Nursing and Rehab Center. He was born Feb. 12, 1917, in Randolph County. His parents were Robert and Virginia Brewer Campbell. He is survived by his wife, Ina Evelyn Scott Campbell and is buried in Bellah Cemetery in Myrtle, MO.

BARBARA JUNE JOHNSON, 58, of Pocahontas, died March 13, 2000, at Randolph County Medical Center. Born March 22, 1941, she was a daughter of the late Albert Lee and Naomi (Bramlett) Johnson. She was retired from the U.S. Navy and is buried in Masonic Cemtery.

JOANN BRUTON, 66, of O'Kean, died March 16, 2000, at St. Bernards Regional Medical Center, Jonesboro. She was born June 12, 1933, in Randolph County, a daughter of the late George William and Myrtle (Williams) Thompson. She was preceded in death by her husband, Darrell Bruton, and is buried in
Sharum Cemetery near O'Kean.

LEHMAN DORIS JOHNSON, 71, of Pocahontas, died March 19, 2000, at St. Bernards Regional Medical Center, Jonesboro. He was born April 9, 1928, in Lawrence County, a son of the late Charles and Verlie (Berry) Johnson. she is survived by his wife, Mary (Matlock) Johnson and is buried in McIlroy Cemetery.

LELIA EMMA BLACKSHEAR, 98, of Pocahontas, died March 14, 2000, at Randolph Home. She was born Sept. 11, 1901, in Randolph County, a daughter of the late James Jefferson and Mary Elizabeth (Bryant) Caffrey. She is survived by a daughter, Mildred Morrow of Pocahontas; and two granddaughters.
Graveside services were held Saturday at Brockett Cemetery with Gerald Fears officiating. McNabb Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. (Full obituary)

JAMES CARROLL POWELL, 77, of Alexander, Ark., died March 17, 2000, at St. Vincent's Medical Center in Little Rock. Born Jan. 30, 1923, near Biggers, he was a son of the late Charles E. and Hattie (Davidson) Powell. His first wife, Emaline Wright Powell, also preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife, Loretta Powell, and is buried in Hite Cemetery near Biggers.

FRED E. BALTZ, 53, of Memphis, Tenn., died March 13, 2000, at Methodist Hospital North, there. He is survived by his wife, Pat Baltz; his mother, Lenora Baltz; and was preceded in death by his father, Joe P. Baltz. He is buried in Memory Hill Gardens there.

LEO FRANK JUNKERSFELD died March 13, 2000 after a gallant battle with cancer, in Bellingham, Wash., where he had moved to be near his son and family. He was born in Pocahontas, a son of the late William and Caroline Bauer Junkersfeld Jan. 3, 1910. In 1933 he married Savilla Mays of Pocahontas. They were married 62 1/2 years until Savilla's death in 1996. He served his country in WWII in the Army Air Corps and stayed in the Air Force Reserve and retired as a lieutenant colonel.

The local draft board forwarded two groups of men to the Examining and Induction Station in Little Rock this morning. The first group will be inducted into the Armed Forces. They are Coy B. Cato of Maynard, Opal K. Carson of O'Kean, Cloyce Odom of Reyno and Charles Robinette, Rt. 1, Walnut Ridge. The second group will be examined to determine their eligibility for induction. They are Charles K. Rose, Clarence Shults and Arvice Virgin of Pocahontas; Paul Bennett of Rt. 1, Berthal Station of Rt. 1, Delaplaine; Tedrick Barkley of Middlebrook; Billie J. Johnson of Biggers; Perry Murphy of Rt. 1, Warm Springs; Willis Cook, Dalton Route.

Mrs. Rachel Anderson, 78, of Imboden, died in a Little Rock rest home Thursday.

Arley Banks Collins, 63, died at his home on Route Two Sunday.

Mrs. Josie Beasley, 72, Fairview Community, died en route to Randolph County Hospital Tuesday.

Mrs. Criss Swindle of District 88 suffered a broken arm and bruises when hooked by a cow.

Born to Mr. and Mrs. George Holland of Brakebill, a 9-lb. girl.

F.E. Throgmartin of Vernon entertained a jolly bunch Saturday night with his Victrola.

Born to Mr. and Mrs. Will Riddle of near Ravenden Springs on March 8, an 8-lb. baby girl.

Miss Gay James of Surridge was absent from school on account of having measles.

OBITUARIES

ELMER SCOTT MOORE, 85, passed away at his residence in Milford, Calif., March 11, 2000. He was born in Pocahontas Feb. 13, 1915, and had been a resident of Lassen County since 1963. He and his wife, Roberta, usually visited in September to attend the Moore-Graham Reunion. He is buried in Diamond Crest Cemetery in Johnstonville, Calif.

EDITH WINELAND, 85, of Pocahontas, died June 4, 1999. She was born in Chicago, Ill., March 17, 1915. She was a member of the Baptist church in Tichnor. She was preceded in death by her husband, Seth Lawrence Wineland, and a son, Delano Levy Wineland. A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 1, at 1 p.m. at Riverfront Park in Pocahontas. All friends and relatives are invited to attend. The body was cremated. (Full obituary)

Two earthquakes the night of March 24 were measured at between 4.5 and 5 on the Richter scale as they shook states throughout the Mississippi River basin along the New Madrid Fault. The only damage reported in Randolph County was that telephone service was disrupted for approximately one hour.

The body of Omer Childs, aged 60, who with his brother, Lester childs, were conceded to have drowned in Black River, near Hoover's Landing last November 29, was found floating in Black River near Pocahontas late Tuesday afternoon.

Troy L. Butler, aged 51 of Pocahontas, died in Randolph County Hospital Wednesday following a long illness.

Mrs. Minerva Jane Knotts, 86, died at her home near Attica Monday.

Benjamin Harrison Haney, 61, died at his farm home near O'Kean Tuesday afternoon.

Reefer Lindsey, 44, died in Randolph County Hospital Sunday morning after suffering a stroke.

NEWS OF MEN IN SERVICE... Pfc. O'Dean Johnston has returned to his base after a furlough which he spent with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Daily Johnson of Biggers. --- Pfc. David Pratt arrived in Pocahontas Tuesday night to spend a 10-day furlough with his father J.N. Pratt. --- Pfc. Lendel H. Vester, son of Mr. and Mrs. W.R. Vester of Pitman, is now undergoing treatment in the Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, DC. --- Mr. and Mrs. E.L. Perrin of Pocahontas have received a letter from their son, Jerry D. Perrin, who is located with the U.S. Air Force in Japan.

Jace Looney had 30 panels of his rail fence to burn while forest fires were raging near Gladesville.

Mr. and Mrs. Claud Stokes were the parents of a new baby at the home in Old Jackson.

Alvin Cude of Old Jackson suffered a badly cut foot.

J.O. Fullerton of Jacksboro, Tenn., was selected as county agent for Randolph County following the resignation of W.B. Proctor.

LORETTA COUNTS, 88, of Pocahontas, died March 31, 2000, at Randolph Home. Born May 3, 1911, in Randolph County, she was a daughter of the late Jim and Nell (Brackett) Wilkerson. Her husband, Frank Counts, preceded her in death. she is buried in Masonic Cemetery.

JOSHUA TYLER CLINE, still-born son of Lonnie and Arlene Cline of Maynard, was born and died March 27, 2000 in Jonesboro. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his paternal grandparents, Vernon and Dorothy Cline of Maynard, and maternal grandparents, B.W. and Jewell Bennett of Pocahontas; paternal great-grandmother, Sally Cline of Maynard; maternal great-grandparents, Clarence Evans of Pocahontas, and Ruford and Lorraine Bennett of Myrtle, MO. He is buried in Maynard Cemetery.

LAURA PETTYJOHN HOOTON, 101, of Clifton, Texas, formerly of Randolph County, died March 30, 2000, at Clifton. Her husband, Burlie Hooton preceded her in death. She is buried in Old Union Cemetery here.

HULEN DENNIS JOHNSON, 75, of Pocahontas, died March 22, 2000, at Pine Land Health Care Center in Mountain Home. He was born Oct. 17, 1924, in Randolph County, a son of the lateDennis Fulton and dona Lee (Kirby) Johnson. His wife, Dessie Roberson Johnson, also preceded him in death. He is buried in
Nelson Cemetery near Reyno.

JOHNY DEAN DAIL, 52, of Ravenden, died March 23, 2000, at St. Bernards Regional Medical Center in Jonesboro. He was born May 16, 1947, near Ravenden, a son of Mildred C. (Bailey) Dail of Ravenden and the lateJohn R. Dail. In addition to his mother, he is also survived by his wife, Maletta Joan (Dixon) Dail. He is buried in Dail Cemetery.

EVAH EVELYN FOSTER, 82, of Pocahontas, died March 20, 2000, at the St. Bernards Regional Medical Center in Jonesboro. she was born June 11, 1917, at Swifton, a daughter of the late Fred and Maude Grey Henderson. She married Charles Tess Foster July 25, 1931 and he preceded her in death March 10, 1990. She is buried in Milligan Camp Ground Cemetery near Strawberry.

EVA RUTH CHRISMAN, 74, of Imboden, died March 29, 2000, at Randolph Home. Born Aug. 19, 1925, in Detroit, Mich., she was a daughter of the late Otto and Emma Esch. She is survived by her husband, Cyral Chrisman and is buried in Hope Cemetery near Imboden.

Mrs. Sarah Shaver, aged 79, widow of Thomas Shaver, died at the home of a son at Sikeston, MO.

Mrs. Samantha Upshaw Robinett, aged 74, widow of Joseph H. Robinett, died in St. Louis Tuesday.

Mrs. S.L. O'Baugh of Beaumont, TX, spent Wednesday in Pocahontas with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. L.F. Blankenship.

The Pocahontas Lions Club, working with County Judge Million, sponsored a campaign to beautify the courtyard in Pocahontas.

OBITUARIES

THALIA ANN RING, 59, of Pocahontas, died April 8, 2000, at her home. Born Aug. 4, 1940, in Alton, MO., she was a daughter of Letha (Blankenship) Payne of Doniphan, MO, and the late Hubert Lawrence Jobe. Her foster parents, Ben and Freccie Wilkerson, also preceded her in death. She is buried in Mt. Zion Cemetery, near paragould.

ONA A. WELLMAN, 70, of Norfolk, VA, died April 5, 2000, at her residence there. She was born in Nelsonville, AR. Funeral services were held at Smith and Williams Funeral Home in Norfork Chapel.

OPAL C. ROGERS, 84, of Pocahontas, died April 10, 2000, at her residence. She was born March 29, 1916, near Water Valley, a daughter of the late Thomas A. and Maude (Fondran) Blansett. Her husband, William Burley Rogers, also preceded her in death. She is buried in Masonic Cemetery.

VENA STACY, 85, of LaFayette, Tenn., formerly of Pocahontas, died April 6, 2000, at St. Thomas Hospital there. She was born June 2, 1914, a daughter of the late Mose King. Her husband, Daley Stacy, also preceded her in death. She is buried in Randolph Memorial Gardens.

LEWIS MILLARD CHILDRESS, 84, of Houston, TX, died March 30, 2000, there. He was born Oct. 22, 1915 in Denton, a son of the late Samuel Kent and Audrey Erwin Childress. He served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII where he fought in front line combat in Okinawa. He married Imo Jean Williams on
Feb. 23, 1938 in Arkansas who survives him. He was buried in Houston National Cemetery with military honors under the auspices of American Legion Post 521 Honors Team of Pasadena.

24 YEARS AGO (from files of April 15, 1976)
Walter H. Rowland, 46, of Pocahontas, was killed and two persons were injured Saturday night in a head-on collision on state Highway 115, two miles north of Maynard, State Police said. The injured were Thurman Ward, 41, and his wife, Mrs. Patsy Ward, 39, both of Warm Springs.

MEN IN SERVICE... Airman Danny R. Haley, son of Mrs. Melva J. Haley of Maynard, has graduated at Keesler AFB, Miss., from the basic course for electronic specialists. He is a 1975 graduate of Maynard High School. --- Ronald James Williams of Route 4, Pocahontas, enlisted in the U.S. Air Force April 2.

NEWS OF MEN IN SERVICE... Sgt. N.H. Wiley, has returned to his home station at Columtus, Ohio, after a period of four months temporary duty in England. --- Cpl. Doyle McKinney recently arrived on Guam and is assigned to the 54th Strategic Reconnaissance Squadron Weather. --- Cpl. Charles W. Jones was with the U.S. Forces that routed the Aggressor Army to conclude exercises in central Texas. --- Pfc. Edward Moore and wife are enjoying a 30-day furlough in Pocahontas with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Moore. Pfc. Moore recently returned to the states after having spent 10 months in Korea.

Burl R. Wiley, aged 56, died suddenly at his home here Thursday night.

Miss Beatrice Loftis was employed to teach the summer terms of school at McIlroy Dist. No. 84.

Born to Mr. and Mrs. Denton Bly, Saturday morning, an 8-lb boy.

Born to Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Pierce of Elmont on April 10, a girl named Wanda Geraldine.

In a message to the Star Herald, Congressman W. A. Oldfield stated he had secured the passage in the House of Representatives, a bill authorizing a free bridge across Current River at Biggers.

ROBERT LEACH BATY, 83, of Pocahontas, died April 16, 2000, at his home.  Born June 17, 1916, in Prague, Okla., he was a son of the late William Robert and Sara Agnes (Laffaveras) Baty. He is survived by his wife, Victoria Abraham Baty. He is buried in Piggott Cemetery.

THOMAS ELBERT COOPER, 94, of Ravenden Springs, died April 13, 2000, at Randolph Home. He was born Dec. 6, 1905, a son of the late James Archie and Mahala (Baldridge) Cooper. He is buried in Bradford Cemetery.

BESSIE ORLEANE DEAN, 69, of Walnut Ridge, died April 16, 2000. She was born July 25, 1930, in Pocahontas, a daughter of the late Felix Levi and Elsie Mae (Dixon) Rennick. She is survived by her husband, Hardee Elmo Dean and is buried in Masonic Cemetery.

SAGE MICHAEL ANDERSON, new-born infant of Windell and Jennifer Wolf Anderson of Pocahontas, died April 12, 2000. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his paternal grandparents, William and Judy Cook of Paragould, maternal grandmother Frances Wolf of Pocahontas, paternal grand-parents Hanzel Guinn and Irene Cook of Paragould, maternal great grandparents, Delbert Lundry of West Plains, MO, and Anna Mae Lundry of Pocahontas. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Yeaman "Mootch" Wolf and his paternal grandfather, Edgar Boyd Anderson. He is buried in Harmony Cemetery.

JAMES EDWARD HILL, 70, of Marksville, La., died April 9, 2000. He was born in Randolph County Jan 28, 1930, a son of Alza Hill of Biggers and the late Jess Hill. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Stella (Jo) Hill and is buried in Cushman Cemetery.

MEN IN SERVICE... Airman Apprentice Linda Lou Abernatha, USN, presented a Plane Captain Certificate for the TA-4J aircraft at Roosevelt Naval Station near San Juan, Puerto Rico, March 28. Linda is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fate Swann of Reyno, and is the first female plane captain at the station.

Crawford, Maynard Route, is serving on the mudbogged eastern front in Korea with the 25th Infantry Division. --- Airman Second Class Bill Frank Crismon arrived home Tuesday for a 15-day furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Crismon at Attica. --- Raymond L. Bly, Airman USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Denton Bly of Pocahontas, is on the USS Antietam, which was taken from a mothball fleet to operate in Korean waters. --- Charles Perrin, who is stationed with the U.S. marines in California, spent last week here with his wife, Lavetta, and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Adam Perrin (PITTMAN NEWS). --- Bill Rapert of the U.S. Army is spending this week with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Rapert. He will return to an Army base in North Carolina (PITTMAN NEWS). --- Private Billy Joe Counts and Mrs. Counts of Virginia visited for a short while last week with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.S. Williams and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Counts (DAVIS NEWS).
 

IN THE LONG, LONG AGO from files of April 26, 1928
Mr. and Mrs. Wes Bennett Jr. are the proud parents of a baby boy born Tuesday night.

Born to Mr. and Mrs. Clem Cox of Knobel, on April 16, a 12-lb. boy named Edward Clement Jr.

Dr. J.R. Loftis reports the arrival of a baby boy to Mr. and Mrs. Ray Ivy on the John Holland farm in the bottoms.

Mr. and Mrs. Francis Wisdom of Biggers are the proud parents of a new baby girl.

Mr. and Mrs. Tommy Kidd of Brakebill are the proud parents of a fine baby  girl.

While plowing on the John A. Fender place on Village Creek, George Purdy unearthed a human skull and part of a skeleton on a spot where a house had stood several years before. The skull has a hole in one side of it.

OBITUARIES

CLEO BERTINUS JETER, 85, of Pocahontas, died April 22, 2000, at Randolph County Medical Center. He was born Nov. 1, 1914, in Bartlesville, Okla., a son of the late Sebron George and Maggie Lee (Watson) Jeter. He is survived by his wife, Wilma (Lee) Jeter and is buried in Masonic Cemetery.

TOMMY LEWIS "HOOK" HOOKER, 47, of Pocahontas, died April 23, 2000, at St. Bernards Regional Medical Center, Jonesboro. He was born in Harrisburg, a son of the late Raymond L. and Ivory Thompson Hooker. He is survived by his wife, Sylvia Meridith Hooker and is buried in Holly Springs Cemetery in Harrisburg.

JOSEPH ELDON BRANSCUM, 81, of Ravenden Springs, died April 21, 2000, at Randolph County Medical Center. He was born July 31, 1918, in Stone County, a son of the late Tram and Viola (Roper) Branscum. He was a WWII veteran and a member of the VFW and DAV. He was united in marriage to the former Onita Ellis on July 13, 1946, in Ash Flat and she survives him. He is buried in Wiles Cemetery in Ash Flat.

GLYN BOWERS HOOTON, 77, of Paragould, died April 22, 2000, at his residence. He was born June 6, 1922, in Altus, Okla., a son of the late William Ross and Della Bowers Hooton. He was a WWII veteran and is buried in Warrens Chapel Cemetery there.

LULA WHITLOCK, 85, of Dexter, Mich., died April 13, 2000, at Annapolis Hospital there. She was born Sept. 15, 1914, in Ripley County, MO, a daughter of the late John and Delema (Jackson) Venable. She was married to Harold R. Whitlock on Sept. 14, 1935 in Arkansas and he survives her. She is buried in Washtenong Memorial Park there.

FRANK McKNIGHT JR., 75, of Arnold, MO., died April 21, 2000. He was born in Black Oak, Jan. 23, 1925, a son of the late Frank Sr. and Nova Jane (Gilmore) McKnight. He was a WWII veteran. He is survived by his wife, Ila Mae McKnight and is buried in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery.

E.W. AARON TUCKER, 83, of Ravenden, died April 22, 2000, at Arkansas Methodist Hospital in Paragould. He was born April 1, 1917, near Evening Starr, a son of the late Emil Wayne and Augusta (Pugsley) Tucker. He is buried in Bond Cemetery there.

SYLVIA MARIE FITZGERALD, 88, of Pocahontas, died April 19, 2000, at her home. Born Feb. 28, 1912, she was a daughter of the late James and Susan (Trawl) Garrison. Her first husband, Charles Fitzgerald, and her second husband, Lee Mont Fitzgerald also preceded her in death. She is buried in Tune Cemetery in Salem.

FREDDIE BARNETT, 80, of Pocahontas, died April 20, 2000. He was born near Ingram, Sept. 14, 1919, a son of the late Joe and Bertha Shocklee Barnett. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nadine Barnett, and is buried in Palestine Cemetery.

LEONA JANE BLEDSOE PELLETIER, 74, of Athens, GA, died April 17, 2000, there. A native of Pocahontas, she was a daughter of the late Judge John Louis Bledsoe and Maude Noe Matthews Bledsoe. She is survived by her husband, S. William Pelletier and is buried in Oconee Hill Cemetery.

ELSIE LUCILLE BAKER, 84, of Dalton, died April 20, 2000, at Randolph Home. She was born Feb. 7, 1916, in Randolph County, a daughter of the late James Steven and Zillah N. (Chester) Brown. Her husband, Carl Baker, also preceded her in death. She is buried in Reynolds Cemetery near Dalton.

EMMETT J. MARLETT, JR., 74, of St. Louis, MO, died April 18, 2000, at South Point Hospital there. Born Oct. 25, 1925, near Warm Springs, he was a son of the late Emmett J. and Easter Bell (Dalton) Marlett. He is buried in Dalton Cemetery.

Franks, son of retired Navy Chief Petty Officer and Mrs. Leo. G. Franks of Route 3, Pocahontas, has graduated from theU.S. Air Force radio equipment repairman course at Keesler AFB at Biloxi, Miss. Airman Franks is a 1975 graduate of Maynard High School.

NEWS OF MEN IN SERVICE... Charles W. Edson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jess Prevett of Biggers, is serving his second enlistment and is a veteran of the Korean War. He is stationed at Fort Bliss, Texas. --- Corporal Billy G. McMullin, son of Mr. and Ms. Frank McMullin, Water Valley, has graduated from the XVI Corps Leaders' School at Camp Matsushima, Japan. --- Recently advanced to the rank of fireman, aboard the heavy cruiser USS Pittsbufg, was Samuel P. Blackwell, son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard L. Blackwell of Warm Springs.

Mrs. Emma Johnson Carter, former resident of Pocahontas, died in Los Angeles, Calif., Wednesday.

Mrs. Vada Pulliam Long, aged 53, died at her home here Monday.

Chess French, aged 71, well-known Delaplaine resident died April 19.
 

IN THE LONG, LONG AGO (from files of May 3, 1928)
Taylor Lindsey, a Pocahontas High School senior, won a cup in Latin at the school contests at Newport. Jess Lester tossed the discus 113 feet, breaking the district record by 1 foot, 7 inches and winning our only first place in track at the meet.

Born to Mr. and Mrs. Hiram Brown on Wednesday morning of this week, a baby boy.

Born Sunday, April 22, a seven-pound boy (Eugene) to Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Emmons of Elmont.

A light frost fell at Noland on the night of April 27.
