OBITUARIES

NOVA JEWEL STEIMEL, 67, of Pocahontas, died May 3, 1999, at St. Bernards Regional Medical Center. She was born June 2, 1931, near Holcomb, MO, a dau of the late John Henry and Ella Marie (Rasdon) Felkon. Sh is survived by her husband, Paul W. Steimel and is buried in St. Paul's Cemetery in Pocahontas.

ESSIE A. CROOM, 85, of Pocahontas, died May 2, 1999, at Randolph County Medical Center. She was born Sept. 28, 1913, near Ingram, a dau of the late Thomas G. and Vicy (Keech) Hurn. She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Leslie Hogan. She is survived by her husband, William Clowell Croom and is buried in Spikes Cemetery.

Mrs. GENNIE BAKER, 80, of Pocahontas, died April 27, 1999. She was born Feb. 10, 1919, near Ingram, a dau of the late William and Annie Cordell Rose. She was also preceded in death by her husband, James D. Baker and is buried in Randolph Memorial Gardens.

MEDA BELL WADDLE, 94, of Ravenden Springs, died May 4, 1999, at Pocahontas Nursing and Rehab Center. She was born Oct. 6, 1904, near Ravenden Springs, a dau of the late William Marion and Mandy A. (Allison) Sullinger. She is also preceded in death by her husband, James A. Waddle, and is buried in Yadkin Cemetery near Ravenden Springs.

JOHN WILLIAM GREVE, SR., 95, of Pocahontas, died April 28, 1999, at Randolph County Medical Center. Born Nov. 6, 1903, in Alton, Ill, he was a son of the late John William and Fannie (Holiday) Greve. He is survived by his wife, Beulah Lee Case Greve and is buried in Masonic Cemetery.

REATHEL L. CLINE, 84, of Pocahontas, died May 3, 1999, at Methodist Hospital, Jonesboro. She was born Feb. 8, 1915, near Sharum. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lester Perry Cline and is buried in Harmony Cemetery near Pocahontas.

JESSIE ANN PEMBERTON, 79, of Widefield, Colo., died April 6, 1999, at a hospital there. She was born Jan. 2, 1920, in Randolph County, the dau of the late Lloyd W. and Mary E. Mondy. She was a native of the Shiloh community and is survived by her husband, Noal Pemberton, whom she married July 10, 1948. She is buried at Evergreen Cemetery, Colorado Springs.

ARLENE CORZINE McGLOTHIN, 74, of North Little Rock, died April 30, 1999. She was born Aug. 18, 1924, in Texarkana to the late Arlie and Mariola Corzine. She is survived by her husband, Jack Clark (Burrow) McGlothin.

ELMER L. HILL, 73, of Rockford, Ill, died April 18, 1999, at his home. He was born Dec. 6, 1925 in Success, a son of the late Elmer O. and Stella Smith Hill. He married Maxine Price of Success on Sept. 8, 1945 and served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He is survived by his wife and is buried in Willwood Burial Park.

MARY J. "NETTIE" FORTNER, 86, of Ravenden Springs, died May 3, 1999, at Randolph County Medical Center. Born March 8, 1913, near Wilson, AR, she was a dau of the late David and Mary (Thiaville) Mitchell. She is survived by her husband, Charley Crockett Fortner and is buried in Masonic Cemetery.

JESSICA MOOREHEAD, 11, of Mountain View, granddaughter of local resident, Otis Baltz and great-granddaughter of Flora Baltz, also of Pocahontas, was killed April 23 near Mountain View when the truck in which she was riding was struck head-on by a utility trailer that had come unhitched from an oncoming vehicle. Harold D. Brewer, 33, Moorehead's uncle and driver of the truck was also killed. Two other passengers, Jarrett Moorehead, age 9, and Joshua Moorehead, age 7, both of Mountain View, were hospitalized. Jessica was born Nov. 18, 1987 at Calico Rock, a dau of Jack Moorehead and Chris Baltz Moorehead, both of Mountain View. She is buried in Bickle's Cove Cemetery.

RUTH YOUNG, 87, of Fairdealing, MO, died May 3, 1999, at Westwood Hills Nursing Cemter in Poplar Bluff, MO. Born May 17, 1911 near Peach Orchard, she was a dau of the late Samuel and Eva (Foshee) Maynard. Her husband, Melvin Young, preceded her in death May 11, 1975. She is buried in Masonic Cemetery in Naylor, MO.

Men in Service - - - Kenneth Michael Walker, a 1970 graduate of Ravenden Springs High School, receivd his commission as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army after completion of Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning, GA, Marcy 6. Lt. Walker's mother, Faye Fuller of Ravenden Springs, and his wife, Mary's parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. S. Pickett of Water Valley, were in Forth Benning for his commissioning.

DEATHS, Levi A. Hogue, 64, Rt. 2, Pocahontas; Mrs. Therma Million Bunker, 59, Denver, Colo.; Essie M. Saylor, 74, Marmaduke; Fermon James and Donald Obryan Prater, infant sons of Ricky and Linda Moore Prater, Rt. 1, Pocahontas; Mrs. Hazel Odom Prenger, 59, California, MO.; Christopher Allen and Billy Allen Ball, twin sons of Alton Leon and Mary Pitcher Ball of
O'Kean were born and died May 2 in Community Methodist Hospital in Paragould; Will M. Jean, 86, Lawrence County.

News from Men in Service --- Robert A. Baltz, son of Mr. and Mrs. Al Baltz of Pocahontas, has been commissioned in the California National Guard as a second lieutenant. --- Private First Class Silas Buckley, has been awarded the Combat Infantryman's Badge while serving in Korea. --- Cadet Clifton Lawson, Rt. 2, Pocahontas, will attend a six week ROTC summer camp at Forth Monmouth, New Jersey beginning June 16, 1951.

Mrs. Martha Frances Preston, 74, died at her home at Ravenden, April 3.

Lindorth C. Parish, 78, died at his home near Supply, Tuesday.

James Edward Johnson, aged 81, died April 18 in a Memphis hospital.

Mrs. Annabelle Fowler Cox, aged 71, died at her home at Supply, Monday.
 

IN THE LONG, LONG AGO, from files of May 12, 1927
Five persons were killed, many injured and thousands of dollars damage was done in Randolph County when a cyclone swept a hundred yard path from Attica to the State Line above Pitman. It appeared to attain its greatest strength in the Martin Spring community where it destroyed several buildings and took four lives. Mrs. Emma Daniels and two children and Amos Lemmons died after being caught in the wreckage of their destroyed home. At Maynard, it was reported that Jesse Harrold had died from injuries when the cyclone struck
the home of Richard Bemis.

Leslie McCandless, 25, drowned in a slough near Poluca on the F. Spinnenweber farm.

Mrs. Alabama Robinson, aged 80, died at her home in South Pocahontas.

ELMER L. HILL, 73, of Rockford, IL, died April 18, 1999, in his home. Born Dec. 6, 1925, at Success, he was the son of Ottis E. and Stella Mae Smith HIll. He married Maxine Price at Success, on Sept. 8, 1945 and she survives him. He was an Army veteran of WWII. He is buried in Wellwood Burial Park, Rockford.

LOY A. HOLDER, SR., 74, of O'Kean, died May 7, 1999, at his residence. Born Dec. 3, 1924, near Elm Store, he was a son of the late Horace and Laura (Stark) Holder. He is survived by his wife, Linda K. Austin Holder and is buried in Randolph Memorial Gardens.

IMO COX MALONEY, 56, of Maynard, died May 9, 1999, at Randolph County Medical Center. She was born March 1, 1942, at Maynard, a dau of William Cox of Maynard and the late Irene (Carter) Cox. She is buried in Cox Cemetery.

News of Men in Service.... Cpl. Preston B. Skaggs this week completed an 8-week course in the cooks and baker's school at Eta Jima, Japan. --- Paul Bargeman of Pocahontas, who is now in service in Italy, wrote to Mr. and Mrs. Burl Wiley stating that he had visited the grave of their son, Harold Wiley, in a cemetery at Nettuno, Italy, on April 26. Harold was killed in action in Italy during WWII.

Funeral services for Lindolph C. Parish, who passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Sherman Fowler, were held at the Grandview Church near Supply at 1 o'clock Thursday afternoon.

Dr. William Osler Loftis, 41, died in the Veteran's Hospital, Alexandria, LA, Saturday night.

Capt. Jesse C. Hayes left on Wednesday of last week for his new assignment in Maryland. (West Ingram News)

IN THE LONG, LONG AGO, from files of May 10, 1927
Earth tremors were added to the erratic weather conditions Friday morning between 2:22 and 2:35 in five states on the Mississippi River valley. The earthquake awoke about everyone in Pocahontas. Dogs and chickens were aroused and for a few minutes created a doleful din. No damages were reported.

Judge E. Foster Brown, 83, a Randolph County native and Confederate of the Civil War, died at the home of a son in Nashville, TN.

STANLEY CLEO MORRIS, 55, of Pocahontas, died May 14, 1999, at Randolph County Medical Center. He was born August 19, 1943, at Dalton, a son of Juanita (Crawford) Robinson of Pocahontas and the late Oscar Cleo Morris. He is survived by his wife, Cora Ann Roberts Morris ans is buried in Randolph Memorial Gardens.

FELIX VESTER WILLIAMS, 89, of Jackson, Tenn., died May 8, 1999, at Madison County General Hospital in Jackson, TN. He was born July 23, 1909, near Brockett, a son of the late Charles Luther and Anna Elkizabeth Buxton Williams. His wife, Margaret Elgie Brooks Williams also preceded him in death. He is buried in Jarrett Cemetery near Maynard.

LEON BELL, 83, of Paragould, formerly of Walnut Ridge, died May 13, 1999, at the Paragould Nursing Home. He was born at Dalton, the son of John and Bertha (Cook) Bell. He married Lillie Mae Golden on June 6, 1944 in Walnut Ridge and she preceded him in death on June 6, 1998. He is buried in Lawrence Memorial Park.

MARY L. WALKER, 61, of Little Rock, died May 11, 1999. She is survived by her husband, James C. Walker and is buried in Nelson Cemetery at Reyno.

JAMES ROY DRAPER, 88, of Maryland Heights, MO, died May 12, 1999 at Delmar Gardens South in St. Louis, MO. He was born Sept. 11, 1910, in Enfield, IL, a son of the late Harvey and Grace Laws Draper. He was alsp preceded in death by his wife, Doris Alberta (Gesell) Draper, and is buried in Hitt Cemetery near Success.

MEN IN SERVICE... Major Darrell E. Johnson has been awarded the Joint Service Commendation for the Director of the Defense Supply Agency, Department of Defense. Major Johnson received the commendation for service rendered at the Defense Depot, Memphis, Tenn., from January 1972 to February 1975. Johnson is married to the former Norma Sue Ward and plans to retire to make his home here. --- Senior Master Sergeant Aubrey H. White, son of Mrs. Myrtle White of Biggers, recently participated in "Gallant Field 75" a joint U.S. Readiness Command joint forces training exercise near Fort Bliss, TX.

Warren Lee Blankenship, aged 52, familiarly known as "W.L.B." to thousands of readers of this column, died in Kennedy General Hospital in Memphis at 9:30 Wednesday morning. Mr. and Mrs. Ora Allison of Dalton have received word that their son, Pvt. William A. Allison, has been reported missing in action in Korea.

MEN IN SERVICE....M-Sgt. Pedro Crismon and wife and son, Steve, of Fort Bliss, TX, are enjoying a visit with relatives and friend here. --- Sgt. Billy Swan has returned to Tampa, FL, after a furlough which he spent with family and friends in Pocahontas. He will be sent to a new assignment in Puerto Rico. --- William Jackson, 19-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Gola Jackson, has completed his Navy Boot Camp and has been assigned to the U.S.S. Bisbee and is now stationed in the Philippines.

William LaRock Stone, 73, died at his home on the Dalton Route at 11 o'clock Sunday night.

Mrs. Ella Adams, aged 74, passed away at her home at Reyno at 5 o'clock a.m., May 10.

Mont Moore Cook, aged 68, well-known farmer of Maynard, died at his home Saturday.

Alexander Sage, aged 96, died at his home in Pocahontas at 7 o'clock Sunday morning.

John H. Wolpers, aged 70, Poplar Bluff publisher and father of Mrs. O. W. McFall, died Sunday at his lodge on Lake Wappapello.

He is survived by his wife, Genevieve M. Combs Bounds and is buried in Walnut Grove Cemetery near Elm Store.

VERDA B. ELKINS, 93, of Doniphan, MO, died May 23, 1999, at her home. She was born Feb. 4, 1906 near Maynard and is buried in Washington Cemetery.

MYRTLE ROSIE TEEL, 89, of Pocahontas, died May 20, 1999 at Randolph County Medical Center. She was born Feb. 27, 1910, in Pocahontas, a daughter of the late Anson and Martha (Fair) Pendergrass and is buried in Thompson Cemetery.

MARK ANTHONY EVITTS, 21, of Imboden, died May 25, 1999, at the Med in Memphis, TN. Born Aug. 18, 1977, he was a son of Dorothy Ann and Dennis Ray Mangrum, who survive him. He is also survived by his maternal grandfather, Albert Franklin Evitts of Terre Haute, Ind.; his paternal grandmother, Sylvia Mangrum of Imboden; and his sister, Jennifer Rae Dustin of Long
Beach, CA. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Norman Mangrum and is buried in Hope Cemetery, Imboden.

Six young people from Biggers injured Thursday afternoon when the automobile they were in was struck by a transport truck near Current River bridge. Miss Theresa Smith, driver of the car and her passengers, June and Clarice Pettigrew, Glenna Faye Tyler, Sue Luter and bobby Hipp, all suffered injuries and were brought to Randolph County Hospital for treatment.

Ida Oakes, colored, died at her home in Walnut Ridge Monday. She was 77 years of age.

Mrs. Birdie Hufstedler Barden, aged 78, died at her home in Pocahontas Wednesday.

Mrs. Susan Garrison, aged 75, died at her home in Reyno Monday.

NEWS OF MEN IN SERVICE.... L. E. Dunn, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. L. E. Dunn of Pocahontas, entered the U.S. Navy on May 18, and is now at the U.S. Naval Training Center, San Diego, Calif. --- Mrs. Pauline N. Coffey, daughter of Oren E. Nevins, Pitman, and her two daughters, Rebecca Sue, 2 and Mary Katherine, 4 months, have arrived in the Philippines to join the head of the family, T-Sgt. Curtis W. Coffey, who is serving an overseas tour of duty with the U.S. Air Force. --- Cadet Thomas Z. James, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Z. James of Route One, is scheduled to graduate from the U.S. Military Academy in June. --- Sgt. Oliver R. Mullinax and wife of Fort Leonard Wood, MO, and Cpl. and Mrs. Lonnie Hill of Fort Hood, Texas, have been recent visitors here with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Mullinax and family. Judge Walter L. Pope and George M. Booth, two of the leading attorneys of Pocahontas, formed a law partnership beginning June 1, 1927.

Mrs. Daly Thompson was in New York City where she took a 10-weeks' special teachers course in music and dramatic art.

Born to Mr. and Mrs. Lester Childs, Sunday morning, a fine baby girl.

Mr. and Mrs. Claud Rice were the proud parents of a fine baby boy.

Mr. and Mrs. Rufe Burrow were proud parents of a find baby girl.

LORINE A. CARTER, 83, of O'Kean, died May 31, 1999, at Methodist Hospital in Jonesboro. She was born Oct. 10, 1915, in Randolph County, a daughter of the late James Franklin and Ora (Ford) Armstrong. Her husband, Clyde C. Carter, also preceded her in death. She is buried in Randolph Memorial Gardens.

VIOLET LEE JOHNSON, 71, of Biggers, died May 26, 1999, at Randolph County Medical Center. Born June 19, 1927, she was a daughter of the late Jessie and Mollie (Bradford) Robinson. She is survived by her husband, Sim Johnson and is buried in Randolph Memorial Gardens.

MRS. ELON S. TOWNSON, 90, of Pocahontas, died May 30, 1999. She was born in Andalusie, Ala., March 2, 1909, a daughter of the late William and Ivy Palmer Smith. She was preceded in death by her husband, J. T. Townson and is buried in Maynard Cemetery.

OPAL ESTER FERGUSON, 85, of Pocahontas, formerly of Jacksboro, Texas, died May 30, 1999. She was born Feb. 22, 1914 in Joy, Texas, a daughter of the late James and Ermin Shirley Sexton. She was preceded in death by two husbands, Hub Shaw and Paul Ferguson, and is buried in Joy Cemetery in Joy, Texas.

CLARENCE LEE SR., 86, of Hoxie, died May 29, 1999, following a lengthy illness. Born Aug. 20, 1912, at Pocahontas, a son of the late Al and Ellie Tyler Lee. He was united in marriage to Mary E. Stokes, Oct. 4, 1930, who survives him. He is buried in Masonic Cemetery at Pocahontas.

MRS. LINDA ODELL PERRY HUNNICUTT, 87, of Imboden, died May 29, 1999 at Randolph County Medical Center, following a lengthy illness. Born Jan 1, 1912, in Whitesville, Tenn., she was a daughter of Frank and Abby Mathis Perry. She moved to Lawrence County in the early life and was married to Frank V. Hunnicutt, who preceded her in death in 1965. She is buried in Opposition Cemetery.

MARK ANTHONY EVITTS, 21, of Imboden, died May 24, 1999, at The Med Center in Memphis, Tenn. Born Aug. 18, 1977, he was a son of Dorothy Ann and Dennis Ray Mangrum. He is also survived by his maternal grandfather, Albert Franklin Evitts of Terre Haute, Ind.; and his paternal grandmother, Sylvia Mangrum of Imboden. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Norman Mangrum. He is buried in Hope Cemetery near Imboden.

A memorial service will be held for LEWIS CONWAY HARPER on Saturday, June 5, at the Harper Cemetery. Mr. Harper died Feb. 23, 1999, and the body was cremated. The remains were returned to Randolph County for burial.

Social News.... Mrs. Dora Downey, an 84-year-old lifelong resident of the Dalton community whose home, dating back to 1823, is the oldest house in Randolph County, recently attended a birthday party at Norfork Lake for her sister, Mrs. Tola Shaver Massey.

Oscar Winchester, 67, retired farmer of Datto, died in Randolph County Hospital Sunday.

Mrs. Hettie Elizabeth Johnson, 69, died at her home near Corning, May 17.

The Rev. Clifton Lanier Davis, 61, died in Randolph County Hospital Monday.

Mrs. Birdie Hufstedler Barden, wife of H.M. Barden, passed away at their home in Pocahontas, May 30.

NEWS FROM MEN IN SERVICE.... Lieutenant David Dean Randle, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Randle of Pocahontas, was awarded the Taylor medal for being an outstanding math student when he graduated from Ole Miss College, Oxford, Miss, last week. He has been assigned as a pilot on the Carrier USS Midway. --- Pfc. Joe W. Snodgrass, Pfc. Charles Goodman and Pfc. Bill Million who are stationed at Camp Atterbury, Ind., spent the weekend with their parents in and near Pocahontas. --- Pfc. Lloyd E. Riney has graduated from the Armament Training School at Lowry Air Force Base. --- Pfc. Bob Harris, Randolph County's first casualty in Korean fighting, having been wounded in action July 20 near Taejon, Korea, has been discharged from the U.S. Army.

Four Pocahontas professional men were singly honored Thursday evening at Randolph Lodge #71, Free and Accepted Masons, in recognition of their 50 years membership in the Randolph Lodge. They were Dr. J.W. Brown, Dr. C.E. Suttle, Dr. W.E. Hamil and Dr. J.W. Ryburn.

A tax receipt belonging to Wm. Evans of near Brockett, whose home was wrecked in the tornado of May 9, was found in a field near Cape Girardeau, Mo., more than a hundred miles from the Evans home.

JESSIE L. GRAHAM, 77 of Sullivan, Mo., died May 29, 1999. He was born April 12, 1922, near Imboden to the late James and Mary (Patterson) Graham. He was a veteran of WWII with the 754th Bombardment Squadron and was awarded a Silver Service Star and a Bronze Service Star, along with a Good Conduct Medal. He marr Thetis O. Jones at Walnut Ridge on May 17, 1948, who preceded him in death on Jan 10, 1987. VFW services were conducted in I.O.O.F. Cemetery, where he is buried.

DOYL GENE BOUNDS, 75, of Dalton, died May 22, 1999, at his residence. He was born Feb. 11, 1924, at Elm Store, a son of the late Chesley I. and Ella (Looney) Bounds. He was a veteran of WWII. He is survived by his wife, Genevieve M. Combs Bounds and is buried in Walnut Grove Cemetery near Elm Store. The VFW Post 4556 Honor Guard conducted a graveside military
service.

RUTH V. JAMES, 84, of Pocahontas, died June 5, 1999, at Lawrence Hall Nursing Center in Walnut Ridge. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe W. James and is buried in Masonic Cemetery.

BURLEY NOBLIN, 91, of Pocahontas, died Sunday, June 6, 1999. He was a member of the Shannon Baptist Church. His wife, Viola Clark Noblin preceded him in death. He is survived by a son, Burley L. Noblin of Atlanta, Ga.; three daughters, Janis Campbell of Myrtle, Mo., Elizabeth Wilson of Phoenix, Ariz., and Joyce Weir of Walnut Ridge; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Graveside services were held Tuesday at Masonic Cemetery with Glen Campbell officiating. McNabb Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Submitted by Bridgette Jansen Cohen.

LORINE A. CARTER, 83, of O'Kean, died May 31, 1999, at Methodist Hospital in Jonesboro. She was born Oct. 10, 1915, in Randolph County, a daughter of the late James Franklin and Ora (Ford) Armstrong. Her husband, Clyde C. Carter also preceded her in death. She is buried in Randolph Memorial Gardens.

ROXIE EDITH HATLEY, 94, of Corning, died at Pocahontas Nursing and Rehab Center, June 7, 1999. She was a daughter of the late Edgar and Cora Tolliver Farrow. Her husband, Heck Hatley, died Nov. 27, 1986. She is buried in Corning Cemetery.

RALPH LEE HILL, 78, of Ravenden, died June 6, 1999. He was born Oct. 26, 1920, at Plymouth, Ill. He was preceded in death by his wife, Maxine Hill and is buried in Yadkin Cemetery.

MEN IN SERVICE.... Three brothers from Warm Springs enlisted in the U.S. Army on May 30. Gary Gabbert, a 1972 graduate of Maynard High School, enlisted for training as a wheel vehicle mechanic. William Gabbert enlisted for ground surveillance radar crewman. Dennis Gabbert enlisted for infantry and Europe. Bill and Dennis are 1975 graduates of Maynard High School. They are the sons of Mr. and Mrs. Marcus Lee McDaniel of Rt. 1, Warm Springs.

NEWS FROM MEN IN SERVICE... Pvt. Billy Rapert, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Rapert, is now stationed at Camp Gordon, Ga. --- Norman Baker, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ottis K. Baker, has re-enlisted in the Army and will be stationed at Fort Riley, Kan. Norman served 3 years overseas in WWII with the Seabees and participated in the invasion of Iwo Jima. His brother, Charles K. Baker, served with the U.S. Army Air Corps and lost a leg in fighting.
Another son of Mr. and Mrs. Baker, Dick, served for 8 months with the Infantry last year and received a medical discharge on Feb. 12. He now makes his home in Pocahontas.

Homer Cowley, 63, well-known farmer of Route One, died at his home Monday.

William Albert Damouth, 60, well-known farmer of Pocahontas, died at St. Bernard's Hospital in Jonesboro, Tuesday.

ELSIE MAE McCRIGHT, 73, of Pocahontas, died June 10, 1999, at her home. Born July 15, 1925, near Benton, she was a daughter of Monnie Gober Cason of Benton and the late William W. Gober. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Leonard McCright. She is buried in Randolph Memorial Gardens.

LEWIS DALTON HATCHER, 93, a longtime resident of Dalton, died at his home in Luna County, N.M., June 2, 1999. He was born June 16, 1905, at Imboden. He moved to Deming, N.M. in 1912 with his parents, Dr. J.O. Hatcher and Nell Dalton Hatcher. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Willie. A funeral service was held at Baca's Funeral Chapel in Deming with burial in Mountain View Cemetery there.

EARL THOMASZ, 85, of Attica, died June 1, 1999, at Heartland Health Care Center, Houston, Texas. He was born Feb. 7, 1914, near Attica, a son of the late Clayburn and Mary Jane (Johnson) Thomas. His wife, Virgin Allison Thomas, also preceded him in death. He is buried in Thomas Cemetery near Attica.

MARY VALERIE WILSON GRAMLING, 30, of Jonesboro, died June 9, 1999, in a two vehicle accident near Cardwell, MO. She is survived by her husband, Jim Gramling, and her parents, Dr. Mike M. and Mary Lou Wilson of Jonesboro, a paternal grandmother, Mrs. Joe T. Wilson, Sr. of Jonesboro and her maternal grandmother, Mrs. Helen Davis of Pocahontas. Emerson Funeral Home was in charge of funeral arrangements; the burial was private.

DELORES ALLEN, 93, of Maynard, died June 10, 1999, at Randolph County Medical Center. She was born June 3, 1906, near Success. She was preceded in death by her husband, Andy Allen and is buried in Pitman Cemetery.

Dr. Holt is stationed with the U.S. Navy at Camp Lejeune, N.C. Marine Corporal Michael E. Farewell, son of Mrs. Yvonne Nourse of Rt. 1, Ravenden Springs, was promoted to his present rank while serving at Marine Barracks, Naval Air Station, Lakehurst, N.J. Airman James J. Moore, son of Mrs. Norman R. Hufstedler of Rt. 1, Warm Springs, has graduated from the U.S. Air Force air traffic control and is being assigned to the Blytheville Air Force Base in Arkansas. Cadet Captain James C. Harper, grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Rex A. Harper, has been selected as the new Group Commander of Air Force ROTC at Michigan State University. Michael Abbott, son of Retired Major and Mrs. Clark J. Abbott of LIttle Rock, graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Spring, Colo., and received his commission as a second lieutenant in the regular air force. He is a grandson of the late Lehman and Loree Johnson Abbott of Maynard and a great-grandson of the late Tom and Minerva Johnson of Maynard.

C.E. Olvey, Jr. of Pocahontas was elected vice president of the Arkansas Association of Insurance Agents in Little Rock last weekend.

Miss Mary Phyllis Newberry, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Newberry, was among ten nurses who graduated from St. Anthony Hospital of Nursing at Dodge City, Kan., on May 20.

Mrs. Nannie Shaver Smith, aged 72, died at her home in Reyno June 13.

David Elisha Lincoln, 66, died at his home in Corning Thursday.

Mrs. Mary Frances Boston, 81, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Cline at Pitman, Monday.

HUBERT ELMO TAYLOR, 66, of Maynard, died June 16, 1999, at his home. Born July 20, 1932, near Supply, he was a son of the late Dewey and Essie (Pride) Taylor. He is survived by his wife, Ruby Cato Taylor and is buried in Ingram Cemetery.

MRS. EDNA HELPER, 88, of Muldrow, Okla., formerly of Walnut Ridge, died June 16, 1999, at Sparks Regional Medical Center in Fort Smith. Born in Ellsinore, Mo., she resided in Ravenden Springs for many years. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Clarence Mitchell in 1980, and her second husband, Paul Helper. She is buried in Randolph Memorial Gardens.

JOHN COLLIER, 68, of Glasgow, Ky., died June 16, 1999 at T.J. Samson Community Hospital there. The Biggers native was the son of the late Herman and Pearl (Kimble) Collier. He is survived by his wife, Shirley Kirby Collier and is buried in Glasgow Municipal Cemetery.

DOROTHY DOWNING, 65, of Imboden, died Jun 18, 1999, at St. Bernards REgional Medical Center, Jonesboro. She was born May 31, 1934, in Black Rock, the daughter of the late Carl and Mary (Pittman) Woodson. She was married to Bob J. Downing on Feb. 27, 1953, in Imboden. He preceded her in death on Jan 30, 1998. She is buried in Hope Cemetery.

BESSIE MARIE DAME, 85, formerly of Anderson, Ind., died at Rolling Meadows Health Care in LaFontaine, Ind., on June 10, 1999. She was born Dec. 26, 1913, in Pocahontas, a daughter of the late Ed and Zetty Melton Thornsberry. Her husband, Edd Dame, also preceded her in death. She is buried in Mississinewa Cemetery in Somerset, Ind.

Dear Editor,
I can remember when Pocahontas had two wells and one public spring, and people would haul water from Black River to do their washing. I also remember when 4 people put out the Star Herald every week. Mr. Blankenship always invited everyone to come in the Star Herald office and look around. I never will forget when George Turner drove the first car in Pocahontas. It was an old time Studebaker and he would charge 25 cents to take people out to Sand Hill and back. He also had the first steam popcorn and peanut roaster in town. I can also remember those wooden sidewalks. There were only wooden walks around the court square.

Miss Adelaide Schoonover, who has been named "Miss Pocahontas", is competing in the Miss Arkansas contest at Paragould yesterday and today. Miss Schoonover is an accomplished pianist.

Dr. E.W. McCleskey, prominent Pocahontas dentist, who recently received his call to military service, is now located at Cameron College, Lawton, Okla. Dr. McCleskey, who maintained a modern dental clinic on Broadway Street, closed the office until he completes his service with Uncle Sam, and expects to return to Pocahontas and resume his practice.

Fay Sallee has a pretty field of rice. It is the first time for rice to be grown around here. - Surridge News.

NEWS FROM MEN IN SERVICE.... Tommy Parker, son of Mrs. R.L. Parker, and who is doing duty aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS Boxer, writes that he recently spent a weeks vacation in Japan, and is now back on active duty in Korean waters. --- Pfc. Leo B. Rickman, who is stationed at Camp Carson, Colo., recently spent a 10-day furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Leo Rickman. --- Pfc. John Greve, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. John Greve of near Pocahontas, is among a group of veterans who are being returned to the United States from the Korean fighting front.

Urcie R. Phipps, aged 66, a native of Randolph County, died at South Gate, Calif., June 20.

Franklin Napoleon Snodgrass, aged 35, prominent young businessman of Biggers, died at Randolph County Hospital Friday.

SAVANAH LEOMA ELDRIDGE, 90, of Ravenden, died June 23, 1999, at Lawrence Hall, Walnut Ridge. She was born March 31, 1909, a daughter of the late Jeff and Etta (Clouett) McMillan. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alvis Burley Eldridge. McNabb Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements, no cemetery is mentioned.

CONA J. CONNER, 70, of Piedmont, MO, died June 24, 1999, in St. Louis, MO. She was born Nov. 2, 1928, in Maynard, a daughter of the late Delber and Effie (Templeton) Carroll. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Paul A. Conner, and is buried in Maynard Cemetery.

TIMOTHY RAY HILL, 38, of Nauvoo, Alabama, died June 21, 1999. He was born Oct. 5, 1960, in Pocahontas, a son of Clarence Hill of Pocahontas and the late Minerva Jarrett Hill. He was buried in Jarrett Cemetery with the VFW Post 4556 Honor Guard conducting military honors at the gravesite.

MARILYN K. KUETER TURNER, 51, of Paragould, died June 23, 1999, at St. Bernards Regional Medical Center, Jonesboro. She was born April 6, 1948, in Paragould, a daughter of the late Theodore Joseph and Gertrude Theresa Weyer Kueter. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Virgil Ray Turner. She is buried in St. Mary's Cemetery in Paragould.

DANNY ROBINSON, 54, died at his home in Fenton, Mo., June 19, after battling pancreatic cancer since January. He was a native of Pocahontas and the youngest son of the late Herbert and Myrl (Chastain) Robinson of here. He is survived by his wife, Sharon and is buried in Brush Creek Cemetery in Pacific, Mo.

RALPH "FUZZY" CARTER, 82, of Harrisburg, died June 23, 1999, at his home. Born in Maynard, he was a son of County Judge and Mrs. C. H. Carter of Maynard. He was a WWII Army Veteran. He is buried at Harrisburg Memorial Park Cemetery.

ZITA MARY DeCLERK BYRNE, 93, of Little Rock, died June 24, 1999. She was born in Pocahontas to Joseph Henry and Mary Anna Junkersfeld DeClerk on July 27, 1905. She was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Leo J. Byrne, whom she married Feb. 26, 1927. She is buried in Calvary Cemetery.

SHAVER LEE DUNN, 83, of Pocahontas, died June 28, 1999, at Randolph Home. He was born March 25, 1916, near Biggers and is buried in Randolph Memorial Gardens.

EARL EDWARD HALL, 89, of Camdenton, Mo., died June 25, 1999, in a nursing home there. He was born in Pocahontas Jan 2, 1910, a son of the late George Washington and Isabella Francis Capps Hall. He is survived by his wife, Edna Ann Hall and is buried in Camdenton.

HUBERT A. REAGAN, JR., 70, of Rockford, Ill., died June 26, 1999, at Swedish American Hospital. Born Sept. 27, 1928, in Senath, Mo., a son of Hubert A. Sr. and Anne (Eskew) Reagan. He is buried in Monroe Center Cemetery.

DALE WOODS, 57, of Corning, died June 29, 1999 at St. Bernards Regional Medical Center, Jonesboro. Born Dec. 1, 1941 in Bragg City, Mo., he was the son of the late J.T. and Cardelia (Smith) Woods. He is survived by his wife, Louise Woods and is buried in Hitt Cemetery at Success.

NEWS OF MEN IN SERVICE... Pvt. Edgar Throesch of Pocahontas has been selected to attend the Auto Mechanics School following the completion of basic training. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Throesch. --- Communist sho batteries are finding that it is unhealthy to fire on U.S. ships. Rudy V. Cook, seaman USN of Biggers, is helping to prove it aborard the destroyer U.S.S. Brinkley Bass. The target of enemy shore batteries in Wonsan Harbor, the ship was slightly damaged as Red shells slammed close aboard. In a return fire engagement, the Brinkley and other UN ships silenced the shore guns with a heavy barrage of shells. --- Mr. and Mrs. Estel Haris recently received a letter from their son, Seaman First Class Billy Jack Harris, who is now stationed in Japan stating that he was feeling fine and was enjoying life. He expects to fly home some time this month. --- Cp. Mack Archer Jr., of the U.S. Marines, is at home for a short leave with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Mack Archer, before receiving assignment to overseas duty.

Mrs. Marganie Jane Parker Samons, 73, died in Charleston, Mo., June 29 following a long illness.

Clifford Price closed a deal with E. L. Chastain in which the latter became the owner of the Price Cafe, located in the Sallee Building.

Born to Mr. and Mrs. George Stackhouse on Monday night, July 4, a baby girl.

Twin babies were born to Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Jansen on Monday, July 4th (Pat and Patricia).

Uncle Peter Daniels died at the home of his brother, Edmond, Sunday morning.

The remains of John Lane were taken to Ravenden Springs for burial in the Janes Cemetery.

ELLOUISE "MINNIE" MITCHELL, 56, of Pocahontas, died July 3, 1999, at her home. She was born April 4, 1943, in Kennett, Mo., a daughter of the late Ralph and Agnes Haynes Rogers. She is survived by her husband, Nelson Mitchell and is buried in Randolph Memorial Gardens.

MARTHA LOUISE GSCHWEND, 99, of Pocahontas, died June 30, 1999 in Randolph Home. She was born June 16, 1900 in Tempton, Mo., a daughter of the late Charles and Helen (Keochner) Steimel. Her husband, M. J. (Mott) Gschwend, also preceded her in death. She is buried in St. Paul's Cemetery, Pocahontas.

NORMA BEATRICE DORAN, 83, of Dalton, died July 1, 1999, at Randolph County Medical Center. She was born Jan. 24, 1916, near Mounds City, Ill., a daughter of the late Marion and Nora (Parker) Sisk. Her husband, Alfred Doran, also preceded her in death. She is buried in Walnut Grove Cemetery.

ETHEL MAE BENNETT, 74, of Dalton, died July 3, 1999, at the Regional Medical Center in Jonesboro. She was born June 27, 1925, near Dalton, a daughter of the late Whitfield and Laura Susan Boothe Taylor. She is survived by her husband, Willard Bennett, and is buried in King Cemetery.

RANDELL ELI ROGERS, 31, of Imboden, died June 29, 1999, at Harrisburg. He was born Aug. 19, 1967, in Jonesboro, a son of Lennie (Dickson) Fortson of Imboden and the late Borden Rogers. He is buried in Hope Cemetery near Imboden.

ANN B. PRIOLO, 76, died June 27, 1999. She was born in Pocahontas, the daughter of Thomas A. and Mary E. (Knotts) Simington. She moved to New Hampshire 21 years ago from Norwell, Mass, and was the widow of John Priolo, who died in 1974. She is buried in Cedar Grove Cemetery in Dorchester, Mass.

JAMES MARSHALL MALIN, 84, of Pocahontas, died July 6, 1999, at Randolph County Medical Center. Born Sept. 18, 1914, at Imboden, he was a son of the late Everett Truman and Emma Gertrude (Tipton) Malin. He was a veteran of WWII and is buried in Old Union Cemetery near Pocahontas.

MARY JOE COLE, 71, of Biggers, died July 2, 1999, at Randolph County Medical Center. She was born Oct. 27, 1927, in Monterey, Ark., a daughter of the late Aaron and Madolene Morgan McMullin. She is survived by her husband, Wilfred Cole and is buried in Randolph Memorial Gardens.

MARY MARGARET WILKERSON, 52, of Walnut Ridge, died July 4, 1999, at Randolph County Medical Center. She was born Oct. 24, 1946 in Randolph County, a daughter of Rosie Lee (Chism) Reese and the late John W. She is survived by her husband, Wear Wilkerson and is buried in Masonic Cemetery.

Mrs. LILY FREDDIE FOSTER, 80, formerly of Black Rock, died June 28, 1999, at the Walnut Ridge Nursing and Rehab Center, following a lengthy illness. Born Jan. 10, 1919, at Pocahontas, she was a daughter of the late Peter H. and Minnie Campbell Copper. She was married to Robert Lloyd Foster, July 25, 1935, who preceded her in death June 8, 1992. She is buried in Lawrence Memorial Park.

Mrs. EVA W. BROWN, 94, of Trumann, died June 27, 1999, at the family residence in Warm Springs. Born in Keensburg, Ill, she had lived in Trumann for the past 86 years, but was formerly of Lilburn, Mo. She was preceded in death by her husband, Stephen Nicholas Brown and is buried in Oaklawn Cemetery in Jonesboro.

Mrs. Ollie Jean Miller, 67, wife of J.M. Miller, died at her home at Imboden, Rt. 1, Saturday.

Mrs. Dora Frances Murray, 64, wife of J.N. Murray, died at their home on Route One Monday afternoon.

Funeral services for Marvin Poe, who died on June 28, from injuries suffered in a blast at Victor Metal Products Company in Newport, were held Sunday in Newport.

The Attica ball team won a ball game from Ravenden Springs Sunday by a score of 7-5.

Twenty businessmen of Pocahontas met last night in the State Bank basement for perfecting the organization of a Lions Club in our city.

Crying for rain is the order of the day.

Miss Gladys James won the cake at the pie supper Saturday which brought $10.85. The proceeds wil lgo to buy song books for the church. Twenty-six pies were sold which brought $13.80. This will go to help refence the White Cemetery. - OCONEE NEWS.

J. S. Swinney, aged 71, died Monday at his home in the New Home settlement on Elevenpoint.

Mrs. R. H. Smith, aged 34, died July 6. Funeral services were held at her home by Rev. Greenleaf. Burial was in Masonic Cemetery.

MRS. KAREN MARTIN WATSON, 53, of Black Rock, died July 5, 1999, at her residence of an apparent heart attack.  She was born at O'Kean.  She is survived by her husband, Jim Watson, and her mother, Virginia Martin of O'Kean.   She is buried in Lawrence Memorial Park Cemetery.

BESSIE I. LYNXWILER,  93, of Warm Springs, died July 6, 1999.  She was born in Union, on Jan. 30, 1906, a daughter of the late Thomas and Annette Bodkin Daniel.  She  was preceded in death by her husbands, Forrest Mooney, who passed away in 1930, Joe Thompson, who passed away in 1938, and Dewey Lynxwiler, who passed away in 1990.  She is buried in Brakebill Cemetery.

CAROLYN DEAN PORCHIE, 36, of Alton, Ill., died July 4, 1999, at St. Louis University Hospital.  She was born Nov. 18, 1962, in Rochelle, Ill., a daughter of Garland Stewart of Rochelle, Ill., and Mary Linda (Burtman) Ogle of Alton, Ill.  She is survived by her husband, Bill Porchie, as well as two step-fathers, Lester Ogle of Alton and Cecil Blackwell of Newton, Kan.  She is buried in Harmony Cemetery near Pocahontas.

WILLIAM WAYNE ELLINGTON, 52, of Imboden, died July 9, 1999, at ST. Bernards Regional Medical Center, Jonesboro.  He was born Sept. 16, 1946, near Pocahontas, a son of William Bryan Ellington of Ravenden and the late Louise Nichols Ellington.  He is survived by his wife, Lou Ann Ellington and is buried in Hope Cemetery near Imboden.

JANA LEA TRIBBLE, infant daughter of Gary Lee and Tanya Michele (Lynch) Tribble, was born and died July 9, at St. Bernards Regional Medical Center, Jonesboro.  In addition to her parents, she is survived by her grandparents, Johnnie Lee Tribble of Pocahontas and the late J.W. Tribble and Mr. and Mrs. Eldon Lynch of St. Louis, Mo; great-grandmothers, Mrs. Lula Dean and Ethel Stubblefield, both of Pocahontas.  She is buried at Randolph Memorial Gardens.

HAROLD GENE MATTHEWS, 40, of Harrison, formerly of Pocahontas, died July 7, 1999.  He was born in Pocahontas, on March 5, 1959, a son of the late Chestley and Glenda Etchason Matthews.  He is buried in Brockett Cemetery.

Slayton of Pocahontas have received word that their son, Pvt. Robert B. Slayton Jr., was wounded in action in Korea June 11.... M-Sgt. John Darrell Cordle has returned to his base at Randolph Field, Texas, after spending his furlough in St. Louis with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. S. D. Allen, and with his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. E.G. Ivy and other relatives on Route One, Pocahontas.... Pfc. Doyle McKinney, who is stationed at Scott Field, Ill., spent the weekend here with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Russell McKinney.... Second Lieutenant Clifford B. Melton, son of John W. Melton of Warm Springs Route, Pocahontas, has recently been recalled to active duty in the Air Force and assigned to Headquarters Squadron at McClellan Air Force Base, Sacramento, Calif.

A cucumber grown in the Dee Johnston garden, of the Straight Eight variety, measured 14 inches long and 10 inches in diameter and weighed 2.25 lbs. - Maynard News.

A civil engineer and a force of assistants arrived in Pocahontas and went to work on Hwy. 67 between here and the state line.

The Randolph County Medical Society held its annual banquet at the Southern Hotel in Ravenden Springs on July 21 at 7 o'clock.

The annual picnic and barbeque at Ravenden Springs was advertised for July 20 and 30 with Carson Higginbotham and manager.

Mr. and Mrs. Witt Waddell of Hamil were the parents of a baby girl.

AGNES MARY BERGMAN, 88, of Pocahontas, died July 18, 1999, at Randolph County Medical Center.  She was born Jan. 15, 1911, in Pocahontas, a daughter of the late Nicholas J. and Mary Catherine (DeClerk) Barthel.  Her husband, Joseph C. Bergman, also preceded her in death.  She is buried in St. John's Cemetery, Engelberg.

BAILEY DWAIN BROWN, 63, of Pocahontas, died July 14, 1999, at his home. Born Aug. 27, 1935, near Ravenden Springs, he was a son of the late Walter Lee and Gladys (Bailey) Brown.  He is survived by his wife, Bobbie Jean Rose Brown and he is buried in Yadkin Cemetery.

HAROLD GENE MATTHEWS, 40, of Harrison, a former resident of Pocahontas, died July 7, 1999.  He was born in Pocahontas March 5, 1959, a son of the late Chestley and Glenda Etchason Matthews.  He is buried in Brockett Cemetery.

SHANNA RAE WILSON, 19, of Pocahontas, died July 15, 1999, at Arkansas Children's Hospital, LIttle Rock.  She was born April 30, 1980, in Paragould, a daughter of Don and Becky Wilson of Pocahontas.  Her grandfathers, Cecil Wilson and V.L. Williams, also preceded her in death. She is also survived by her grandmothers, Ruby Wilson of Pocahontas and Willodine Williams of Riverside, Calif.  She is buried in Palestine Cemetery.

LYNDA EDWARDS, 51, of Victoria, Ark., died at her home July 13, 1999.  Born Feb. 5, 1948, at Datto, she was a daughter of Ray Houston Ingram and the late Mary Exie (Ferguson) Ingram.  She is also survived by her husband, Kerry Edwards, and is buried in Corning Cemetery.

JOHN HERMAN HALFORD, 80, of Success, died July 16, 1999, at Clay Healthcare Center in Corning.  He was born Sept. 5, 1918, at Reyno, a son of the late Daly and Willie (Poteet) Halford.  He was also preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Elizabeth (Jones) Halford.  He is buried in Nelson Cemetery near Reyno.

BENNIE TATE, 76, of Maynard, died July 15, 1999.  He was born in Waldo, May 21, 1923, a son of the late Andrew and Martha Bolt Tate.  His wife, Virgie Rhinehart Tate, also preceded him in death.  He was a veteran of WWII and was awarded the Purple Heart, a Good Conduct Clasp, Combat Infantryman's Badge and a WWII Victory Medal.  He is buried in Ingram Cemetery.

LAWRENCE W. DAVIS, 83, of Paragould, died July 18, 1999, at Arkansas Methodist Hospital there.  He was born April 14, 1916, in Missouri, a son of Kay Wesley and Rebecca Ann Lawrence.  He is survived by his wife, Orazetta Davis ans is buried in Masonic Cemetery, Pocahontas.

ELLA V. CROOM, 90, of Walnut Ridge, died July 13, 1999, at St. Bernards Regional Medical Center, Jonesboro.  She was born Feb. 2, 1909, near Middlebrook, a daughter of the late Rev. Larkin and Sally (Carter) Johnston. Her husband, Aaron Croom, also preceded her in death.  She is buried in Spikes Cemetery.

Four Engelberg Natives to mark 50 Years as Nuns... Four Benedictine nuns will return to their hometown of Engelberg Sunday to celebrate their 50th anniversaries in the sisterhood.  Sisters Rita Sparber, Edigna Sparber, Mathilda Sparber and Gabriel Koechner will renew their vows at the 10 a.m. Mass in St. John's Church.  The parish will honor them with a picnic in the afternoon.

MEN IN SERVICE... Army Private Richard D. Tarantino, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jay S. Riley of Pocahontas, completed the "One Station Unit Training" at Fort Polk, La. ... A Maynard man, Airman Martin R. Matheny, son of Mr. and Mrs. Archie J. Matheny of Rt. 1, Maynard, has completed a course in the preparation of personnel records and reports and now goes to Mildenhall RAF Station, England, for duty with a unit of the U.S. Air Forces in Europe. Matheny is a 1973 graduate of Maynard High School.... marine Private First Class Terry J. Jones, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alden Jones of Pocahontas, has reported for duty with the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing at the Marine Corps Air Station, El Toro, Calif.

Mrs. Marvin W. Sharp and three small children suffered fatal burns when their farm home on the Dalton Route, about 12 miles northwest of Pocahontas, was destroyed by the fire last Thursday.

The body of W.R. Toone, 28-year-old Marine veteran of Rector, who drowned in Black River near Knobel late Saturday, was found floating near Grady's Camp shortly before noon.

NEWS OF MEN IN SERVICE.... Pfc. Bill Rapert, who is stationed at Camp Gordon, Ga., is spending his furlough at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Rapert of Middlebrook.... Pvt. Hubert A. Brodell of Camp Gordon, Ga., is spending his furlough with his father, John Brodell, and his brother, Eugene Brodell and family and with other relatives in Randolph County.

Mrs. Leota Arvena Reynolds Seymour, 77, Reyno, passed away Sunday in Thayer, MO.

Tom W. Turner, aged 80, died in St. Louis, Saturday.

Herman Mofield, died in Anderson, Ind., July 11.

James Willis Collier, aged 70, died at his home on the Dalton Route Friday.

Mrs. Maude Wells Rickman died at her home near Dalton on her 83rd birthday, Saturday.

Several blocks of West Broadway STreet were opened between the Ford Motor Co. and the bridge on the Kolley property.  Also, the street for the Preston home to the Frisco tracks was opened at that time.

Thirty four pupils were enrolled in the Eleven Point School with Miss Essie Stubblefield as teacher.

Born to Mr. and Mrs. Walter Dunham at Old Jackson, July 21, a 11.5 baby boy.

JOHN ALLEN CRAWFORD, 39, of Pocahontas, died July 22, 1999 at Leesville, La. He was born in Randolph County, a son of Alta F. (Hogue) Crawford of Pocahontas and the late Johnny Ollie Crawford.  He is also survived by his wife, Julie Crawford and is buried in White Cemetery.

CLARA ADDLINE FULTNER, 84, of Pocahontas, died July 23, 1999, at Randolph County Medical Center.  She was born Feb. 15, 1915, in Lawrence County, a daughter of the late Henry and Addline (Kerr) Clements.  She is also preceded by her husband, Bob Simpson and is buried in Lawrence Memorial Park, near Walnut Ridge.

ALVIN WARD, 84, a lifetime resident of Imboden, died July 24, 1999, at St. Bernards Regional Medical Center in Jonesboro.  He was born Feb. 22, 1915, in Randolph County, a son of the late Charlie B. and Iva (Janes) Ward.  He married Ruth Propst on May 6, 1938 in Black Rock, who survives him.  Sh is buried in Hope Cemetery in Imboden.

WILLIAM AUDRIAN MILLION, 81, of San Antonio, Texas, died July 21, 1999.  He was born Feb. 16, 1918, in Pocahontas.  He is buried at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery with military honors.

GENEVA STARLING, 92, of Pocahontas, died July 20, 1999.  She was born in Birdell, July 23, 1906, a daughter of the late Horace and Birdie Hufstedler Barden.  Her husband, J. V. Starling, also preceded her in death.  She is buried in Masonic Cemetery.

HERMAN ALLEN "BUCK" DAUCK, 57, of Pocahontas, died July 24, 1999, at Eastern Ozarks Regional Health System in Cherokee Village.  Born July 22, 1942, in Randolph County, he was a son of the late Leo Marshall and Elma Mae (Penn) Dauck.  He is survived by his wife, George Ann Parish Dauck, and is buried in Masonic Cemetery.

VIRGINIA B. MARTIN, 82, of Walnut Ridge, formerly of O'Kean, died July 20, 1999, at St. Bernards Regional Medical Center, Jonesboro, following a lengthy illness.  Born Sept. 21, 1916, she was a daughter of the late John and Ruth (Baskey) Barham.  She was united in marriage to Charley Martin, Nov. 5, 1932, who preceded her in death Oct. 11, 1966.  She is buried in Lawrence Memorial Park.

VERNON EUGENE KENNER, 41, of Supply, died July 25, 1999, at St. Bernards Regional Medical Center in Jonesboro, following complications from surgery. He was born July 22, 1958, in Streator, Ill., and had spent most of his life in Ripley County, MO.  In March, 1991, he was married to Eddie Faye Skimahorn in Doniphan, MO.  He is buried at Shirley Cemetery in Missouri.

ROBERT SAMUEL WILLIAMSON, 34, of Gosnell, died July 20, 1999, at Mid-South Regional Medical Center in Memphis.  He was born in Pocahontas, a son of Bob and Nancy Dauck Williamson of Osceola.  He was also survived by his wife, Teresa Lynn Hall Williamson of Gosnell and is buried in Masonic Cemetery in Pocahontas.

MICHAEL A. "TONY" DeCLERK, 42, of Los Angeles, Calif., died July 3, 1999, at Cedars of Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles.  He was born Aug. 20, 1956, in Pocahontas, a son of Rainer and Sue DeClerk.  Funeral services were held at Blessed Sacrament Church in Hollywood, Calif., with Father Christopher presiding.

HAROLD MARION BLACK, 89, of Powell, Tenn., died July 19, 1999, at NHC Nursing Center in Oak Ridge, Tenn.  Born Aug. 19, 1909, in Pocahontas, he was a son of the late Charles Kimbler and Dixie (Robinson) Black.  He is survived by his wife, Mabel Wells Black, and is buried in Masonic Cemetery.

MEN IN SERVICE.... T-Sgt. William H. McIlroy received the Bronze Star Medal for meritorious achievements while serving with the 51st Fighter Interceptor Wing in Korea.  He is the son of MR. and Mrs. Frank McIlroy of Rt. 2, Pocahontas. --- Mr. and Mrs. Ora Allison of Dalton have received word that their son, Pvt. William A. Allison, is a Chinese prisoner of war.  He earlier had been reported as missing in action in Korea. --- Pfc. Harold Difani, who had been stationed at Fort Belvour, VA., is on furlough and visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Difani. --- Pfc. James W. Jansen has arrived in the states from Korea. --- Bennie Williams, S-A, who has been in the Korean war zone for some time, is now in Japan and writes that he may be in the states in October. --- Cpl. Leo Bergman, who has been serving with the armed forces in Okinawa, will arrive here today to spend a furlough with his family. --- Raymond Bly is spending his leave from the Navy with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Denton Bly and friends.

Newt A. Stubblefield, aged 80, died in a hospital in Washington Thursday night.

Henry John Gschwend, aged 65, a native of Pocahontas, died in Urbana, Ill., Monday.

Waldo Johnson, aged 56 of Little Rock, died in a hospital there Monday night.

John Stevens, aged 68, died at his home in Pocahontas Tuesday night.

ANNA MURIEL (McNEESE) ASHLOCK, 89, of Imboden, died Aug. 1, 1999 at her home.  She was born May 27, 1910, in Cushman, a daughter of the late John A. and Ella (Smith) McNeese.  She was married on April 19, 1930 to Clarence A. Ashlock, who also precedes her in death.  She is buried in Fairview Cemetery near Imboden.

BASIL FOSTER, 80, of Pocahontas, died at Randolph County Medical Center, July 28, 1999. He was born July 11, 1919, at Palatka, a son of the late Ruben Elmer and Edna (Edwards) Foster.  He is survived by his wife, Rachel (March) Foster.  He served in the U.S. Army and is buried in Blacks Cemetery near Palatka.

MRS. MERLE GLADYS GREENWOOD CASEBIER, 93, of Imboden, died July 31, 1999, at her home.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil Owen Casebier, on April 24, 1999.  She is buried in Farm Hill Cemetery near Harrisburg.

MILDRED DALE, 91, of Memphis, TN, died July 30, 1999, at St. Francis Nursing Home there.  She was born Oct. 27, 1907, in Ravenden, the daughter of the late Henry and Sally (Bottoms) Deyling.  She was married to Clarence Dale in January, 1930, at Memphis, and he preceded her in deaty on marcy 9, 1948. She is buried in Opposition Cemetery near Ravenden.

R. WANDA HEARING WARD, 80, of Abingdon, Ill., died July 30, 1999, at OSF St. Mary Medical Center in Galesburg, Ill.  She was born July 11, 1919, in Oregon County near Myrtle, Mo., a daughter of the late Edward and Bessie Brewer Hearring.  She is survived by her husband, Guy M. Ward and is buried in Abingdon Cemetery.

GLEN TIPTON RUFF, 85, of Maynard, died July 28, 1999, at Randolph County Medical Center.  Born Nov. 20, 1918, near Pitman, he was a son of the late Robert Lee and Effie (Costigan) Ruff.  He is survived by his wife, Mary Lawrence Ruff and is buried in Pitman Cemetery.

TOLBERT COLUMBUS BURNS, 91, of Rector, died at his residence there on July 29, 1999.  He was born July 8, 1908, near Knob, a son of the late Alexander "Fate" and Matilda Burns.  His wife, Blanche (Pierce) Burns also preceded him in death on Dec. 20, 1995.  He is buried in Mars Hill Cemetery near Crockett.

Adren Jackson, prominent businessman of Reyno, underwent the amputation of his left arm at Kennedy General Hospital in Memphis, Thursday, after the arm had been mangled by an automobile transport which sideswiped his car as he drove toward his home Wednesday night.

Raymond Jackson, young son of Mr. and Mrs. J.R. Jackson, is improving nicely from painful injuries suffered when he fell from the automobile of his grandfather, R.E. Sallee, about 3 p.m. Saturday.

David Bowlin entertained with a party at his home Wednesday, the occasion being his fourth birthday.

Roy Ford of near Delaplaine was awarded the 2-year-old Jersey cow, Bossy, given away by Million Motor Company last Saturday.

James Thomas (Tom) Johnson, 80, former resident of Maynard, died in Little Rock Saturday.

Cleo Bates, aged 59, died in Kennedy General Hospital in Memphis, July 25.

James A. Cooper, 91, died at Ravenden Springs Tuesday afternoon.

Earnest McCarroll, aged 58, well-known Pocahontas colored man, died at his home August 1.

Miss Cecilia and Andrew Wylllie have returned home from St. Louis where they attended a school for floral designing and purchased stock for the Pocahontas Floral Co.

The four-year-old baby of Mr. and Mrs. G. C. Terry happened to a very painful accident when she fell from the porch at the home of her parents and cut her hip on a broken fruit jar.
 

RANDOLPH COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY TO PUBLISH NEW BOOK OF FAMILY HISTORIES
The Randolph County, Arkansas, Historical Society has elected to publish a new book of family histories. The high quality, large hardbound book entitled Randolph County, Arkansas History and Families, will include a leathertone cover with gold embossing on the front and spine.  Included in the book will be a history of the county as well as histories of businesses, churches, clubs and organizations and special historical highlights but the bulk of the book will contain histories of Randolph County families, past and present.  Rose Publishing Company of Humboldt, Tenn., will be the publisher.  The company specializes in family history books and is currently publishing books for Greene, Lawrence and Carroll counties in Arkansas as well as in nearby states. Any family who now lives or has ever lived in Randolph County or has any family ties tothe county will be eligible to submit up to 500 words with one family photograph free of charge.  Additional photos can be included for $15 each and additional words are subject to a nominal charge of 15 cents per word over the 500 word limit.  The committee is asking those who submit family stories to submit them in a typed and double-spaced form if possible. In addition, the society will offer the books at a special pre-sale price of $49.95 (plus $5 shipping, if mailed). The book will give many Randolph Countians their first opportunity to have their family history published in a book of this type.  The book will place an emphasis on early family life enabling future generations to learn what life was like for their ancestors. OBITUARIES

CHARLES ARNOT ALLEN, 69, of Ravenden Springs, died Aug. 4, 1999, at Randolph County Medical Center.  He was born Oct. 20, 1929, in Independence, MO, a son of Mary Margaret (Baldwin) Blomquist of Pocahontas and the late Charles Berry Allen.  In addition to his mother, he is also survived by his wife, Evelyn Yamin Allen.  He is buried in Antioch Cemetery.

RONALD RAYMOND KELLIM, 59, of Pocahontas, Illinois, died July 29, 1999 at St. Joseph Hospital, in Highland, Illinois.  He was born in Pocahontas,
Ark., Sept 3, 1939, a son of the late Raymond Roy and Opal Merrill Driskill Kellim.  He was a Vetenam veteran.  Memorial services were held Tuesday afternoon at May Funeral Home, in Pocahontas, Ill.

BILL J. CREWS, 74, of Jonesboro, died Aug. 7, 1999, at St. Bernards Regional Medical Center there.  Born in Pocahontas, he was a son of Leonard and Mara Stubblefield Crews.  He served in World War II in the Merchant Marines.  He is buried in Masonic Cemetery in Pocahontas.

WILLA DEAN MORRIS, 66, of Hot Springs, died Aug. 6, 1999, at her home.  She was born March 20, 1933, in Walnut Ridge, a daughter of the late Guy Eugene and Thelma Zana (Sparks) Hawkins.  She is survived by her husband, Murl Morris, and is buried in Morning Star Cemetery in Hot Springs.

Death of Farmer Blamed on Herbicide
The Arkansas State Department of Health told the Star Herald this week that it had been confirmed that a farmer living near Pocahontas was the fatal victim of herbicide poisoning after using the poison to kill weeds in soybean crops.  Mitchell Earl Johnson, 59, of Rt. 1, Pocahontas, died July 0 at V.A. Hospital, Poplar Bluff, MO.  Cause of death was reported as "dinitrophenol poisoning."  Phil Peters, director of the Pesticide Project at the state Health Dept., warned that the herbicide, dinitrophenol, can be absorbed in lethal doses through the skin or by inhalation.  He said six drops of dinitrophenol concentrate ingested by a human would be lethal.

MEN IN SERVICE... Chief Warrant Officer W-2 Benton D. Eldridge, son of Mr. and Mrs. Roscoe Eldridge of Pocahontas, was presented a certificate at Fort
Rucker, Ala., last week for flying 3,000 hours without an accident... Pvt. William Eugene Kincade graduated from basic training at Fort Leonard Wood Mo., July 18.  Pvt. Kincade is the son of Glen Ray Kincade of Pomona, Mo., and Mrs. Ann Wells of Austin, Texas.

be sent to Fort Sill, Okla., for basic training.  They are Jesse Lynn Ewing of Maynard and Lovell Prater of Rt. 1, Pocahontas...  Pfc. Darrell R. Bruton, son of Mr. and Mrs. Enoch Bruton of Rt. 1, was recently promoted to the rank of Privage First Class at Fort Bragg, N.C...  Pfc. David C. Pratt, son of J.N. Pratt of Pocahontas, has recently completed his basic training at Sheppard AFB in Wichita Fall, Texas.  He is now studying radar machines...  Pfc. Harold Difani, who had been visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Difani, of Maynard Route, has gone to Seattle, Wash., where he expects to be shipped this week to Korea.

Terry Thompson, son of Mr. and Mrs. B.J. Thompson, sustained a broken arm when he fell from the Frisco railroad bridge while playing with several
playmates.

Chester Knowlton suffered a broken arm and Charlie Cox received injuries to a shoulder when a team ran away while hauling hay this week. -- East Supply

D. Lawrence Dalton and Irene Lamb were married in the courthouse here on the afternoon of August 10.

An airplane flying toward the northeast passed over Noland last Sunday about midday.

Mrs. Minnie Phillips of Noland was only slightly injured when she fell from a wagon in which she was riding.  The wagon wheel passed over her shoulder.
While falling, she threw her baby clear of the danger.  The infant was picked up uninjured.

Pat Jansen of the Jansen Chevrolet Co. broke his right arm below the wrist while attempting to crank an automobile.

PAULINE "POLLY" PETERSEN, 77, of Pocahontas, died at her residence near Birdell on Saturday, Aug. 14, 1999.  She was born Aug. 8, 1922 at Stuttgart,
a daughter of the late William Lawland and Lilly Bell Jackson Ragan.  She is survived by her husband, Larry Peterson, and is buried in Randolph Memorial
Gardens.

MARVIN HENRY LOONEY, 83, of Imboden, died Aug. 14, 1999, at the home of a son, David E. Looney, in Pocahontas.  He was born March 21, 1916, near
Dalton, a son of the late William Henry and Jessie V. (Binkley) Looney.  He was also preceded in death by his wife, Mayme Clarebelle Noble Looney.  He
is buried in Friendship Cemetery near Pocahontas.

EDWARD "ED" YOUNG, 81, of Imboden, died Aug. 12, 1999, at his residence. Born April 10, 1918 near Pocahontas, he was a son of the late William and
Rose (Shockley) Young.  He is survived by his wife, Elsie McCarroll Young and is buried in Shockley Cemetery.

CARL "ELIC" MORGAN, 73, of Corning, died Aug. 11, 1999, at his residence. He was born Aug. 28, 192 near Sharum, a son of the late Martin and Christina
(Burgess) Morgan.  He is survived by his wife, Laveta Tribble Morgan, and is buried in Randolph Memorial Gardens.

A.J. CRABTREE, JR., 66, of Imboden, died Aug. 15, 1999, at his residence. He was born May 20, 1933, near Ravenden, a son of the late Andrew Jackson
Sr. and Snoda Baker Crabtree.  He was a veteran of the Korean War.  He is survived by his wife, Sarah Ann Dunn Crabtree and is buried in Dunn Cemetery, with a VFW Honor Guard conducting graveside military services.

KATHERINE MARIE SWANK, 76, of Wichita, Kan., died Aug. 14, 1999 there. Broadway Mortuary in Wichita was in charge of funeral arrangements.

Child Hit by Car, Dies
Joseph Anthony Fields, 3-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Tommy Fields of Biggers, was killed instantly at 6:30 p.m., Saturday, when hit by a Toyota pickup at the intersection of the old airport road and Hwy. 67, just north of the bypass road into Biggers.  State Trooper Weldon Evans, who investigated the accident, said a witness to the accident told him the little boy was walking along the airport road with his 6-year-old sister and their dog when the boy stopped and looked on Hwy. 67 to see if the highway was clear before he crossed, and the boy let the first car pass, then without looking again, darted out on the highway and was hit by the second vehicle.

MEN IN SERVICE... Air Force Senior Master Sergeant Aubrey H. White, son of Mrs. Myrtle White of Biggers, was selected to participate in "Brave Shield
XII", a U.S. Readiness Comand joint exercise being held near Fort Hood, Texas.  Sgt. White graduated from Biggers High School in 1950...  The U.S. Air Force has promoted Clark L. Matheny, son of Archie J. Matheny of Rt. 1, Maynard, to the rank of Airman First Class while he is serving at Kelly AFB, Texas.  Matheny is a 1974 graduate of Maynard High School.  His wife, Rebecca, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Zan Brown of Rt. 2, Pocahontas.

NEWS OF MEN IN SERVICE...  Funeral services for Sgt. 1st Class Clarence Gene Brown, aged 21, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Brown of Pocahontas,  Route 1, were held Tuesday afternoon at the First Baptist Church.  Sgt. Brown was killed in action in Korea in February and the remains arrived in Pocahontas Monday...  Major James Ray Haynes writes to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Erman Haynes of Pocahontas, that he has arrived in Japan and overseas duty... Pfc. Charles W. Edson, 19-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Jess Prevett, is home enjoying a 30-day furlough after 11 months of combat duty in Korea...  Pvt. Charles W. Jones was honored Sunday when his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charley Jones of Rt. 1, Pocahontas, entertained several of his friends and relatives with a dinner at their home...  Pvt. Doyle Tarlton, son of Mr. and Mrs. H.D. Tarlton of Marked Tree, but formerly of Route 1, Pocahontas, is now located within 40 miles of the front lines in Korea...  Another step up the promotion ladder was taken by Benjamin L. Williams, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Williams of Engelberg, who was recently promoted to seaman aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Boxer...  Pvt. William R. Simington, 18,son of Mr. and Mrs. J.C. Simington of Attica, has completed his Air Force basic airman indoctrination at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas.
 

IN THE LONG, LONG AGO (from files of Aug .25, 1927)
Plans for a new free river bridge across Black River here are underway.  The old bridge had been built 25 years before and had been used as a railroad and wagon bridge for 10 years before the Frisco bridge was built. Increasing heavy traffic made the demand for a wider and more substantial bridge necessary.

O.C. Mock, assistant cashier of the Randolph County Bank, and his family, spent a vacation with his parents at Warm Springs.

Donald Jackson exhibited a stalk of cotton which had 24 grown bolls on it.  He said it was an average stalk picked at random and that his entire crop
was equally good.

Born to Mr. and Mrs. Rufus Valentine, on Aug. 16, a girl named Mary Louise.

Born to Mr. and Mrs. Clifton Harris of Stokes, a baby girl.

THELMA OLIVE LANE, 89, of Pocahontas, died Aug. 20, 1999, at Pocahontas Nursing and Rehab Center.  She was born in Couch, MO, Aug. 20, 1910, a daughter of the late John Lewis and Ada Sarah (Wheeler) Oneal.  Her husband Waymon Lane, also preceded her in death.  She is buried in Walnut Grove Cemetery.

PERRY JOE PACE, 81, of Pocahontas, died Aug. 18, 1999, at his residence.  He was born Aug. 9, 1918, in Pocahontas, a son of the late Noah Edward and Ora Wilma (Pyland) Pace.  He is survived by his wife, Virginia Elizabeth Cotton Pace and is buried in Masonic Cemetery.

ALICE NAOMI JAMES POYNOR, 94, of Jonesboro, died Aug. 16, 1999, at St. Bernards Regional Medical Center in Jonesboro.  She was born Mar. 22, 1905 in Pocahontas, a daughter of the late George and Myrtle (Luttrell) James. She is buried in Masonic Cemetery.

DELANO TENNISON, 58, of Houston, Texas, died Aug. 21, 1999, at Southwest Memorial Hospital there.  Born at Clover Bend, he moved to Houston about 20 years ago.    He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Pearl Tennison and is buried at Strangers Home Cemetery near Alicia.

BERNICE GATES FORTSON, 68, of Delaplaine, died Aug. 17, 1999, at St. Francis Hospital in Memphis, Tenn.  She was obrn at O'Kean, moved to Hammond, Ind., in the 1950's, and then moved back to Arkansas in 1971.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Fortson, in 1991.  She is buried in Jones Ridge Cemetery near Delaplaine.

Wolf, and his wife, Vickie, live in Pocahontas and Army Provate Homer E. Barnett, son of Mr. and Mrs. Eluia M. Barnett of Rt. 2, have recently completed One Station Unit Training at Fort Polk, LA...  Jackie L. Land, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bert Land of Maynard, was promoted to Army Private First Class while serving as a repairman with the 13th Corps Command...  Airman Larry W. Wright, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Wright of Pocahontas, has been selected for technical training at Keesler AFB, Miss., as a communications systems operator... U.S. Air Force Staff Sergeant Danny C. Rexroad, son of Mr. and Mrs. Berry Rexroad of Rt. 3, Pocahontas, has received the Distinguished Flying Cross at Camp New Amsterdam, Netherlands, for aerial achievement in 1973 while assigned to Ubon Royal Thai AFB, Thailand.

The remains of Pfc. Elishie M. Condict, 20-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. J.L. Condict of Pocahontas, who was killed in action in Korea in February, will
arrive at McNabb Funeral Home Monday and lie in state there until time for services on Tuesday.

Gordon W. Rice, son of Mr. and Mrs. Homer A. Rice of Pocahontas, has been promoted to Sgt. First Class in Korea.  Rice's unit is the infantry force
which made the spectacular capture of Pyongyang, the North Corean capital city.

Lloyd Lewallen drove by Friday morning and showed me a 78 lb. gar, measuring 6 feet, which he had hooked in Black River near the highway bridge in
Pocahontas.  He was so excited that he went out the next day and caught a mammoth one weighing 172 lbs., and measuring over 7 feet in length. -- HERE

Jacob Adolphus Waddle, 75 of Pocahontas, passed away at the home of his sister Friday.

Mrs. Minnie Duvall, 70, died at Randolph County Memorial Hospital Friday.

George McCarty, aged 74 of O'Kean, died Tuesday in a Jonesboro hospital.

Mrs. Rebecca McDaniel, who made her home in Pocahontas for several years, died at the home of a daughter in Oregon Monday.

John R. Johnson was appointed postmaster of Attica, succeeding Sular McNabb.

Joe F. Scott of Noland was in Pocahontas and exhibited the first open cotton ball.
George W. Hibbard, aged 81, of the Attica community, died at the home of his son, James, in Walnut Ridge, August 22.  He was a Civil War veteran.

Mr. and Mrs. Cloyd Martin of O'Kean are the parents of a 9 lb. girl born August 23.
