The most disastrous flood in the history of the state swept Arkansas this month.
Randolph County had its share of the flood waters when Black River at Pocahontas
made a rise of 26.7 above the low water mark and the other rivers over the
county were proportionately high. Eleven Point was within two feet of the floor
of the bridge at Birdell. Fourche at Brockett was said to have been the highest
in the memory of inhabitants of that community. Current River flooding was
perhaps the most serious of all. This river flows through the Cherokee Bay
lowlands and its high water flooded land that was never inundated before. Above
Buttermilk Bend, on upper Black, the water went over the levee flooding out all
the section between Sharum and Holmes. The government gauge at Pocahontas showed
a rise of 13 inches past the rise made in the August 1915 overflow. Pocahontas
was completely shut off from the rest of the world except through telephone and
boat service.
