SCHMIEDING, Howard Allen Sr.

Word was received in Mena Sunday evening of the death about
2:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon of Howard Allen Schmieding, Sr. ,
65-year old former Mena resident, which occurred at Portales,
N.M. He was the father of Mrs. Richard W. St. John. Death was
attributed to a heart attack. For some 25 years, Mr. Schmieding
was an engineer with the Arkansas Highway department and the
Arkansas Game and Fish Commission. He lived in Mena from 1934
until 1938 and was local resident engineer for the Highway
department while highway 71 was being relocated between Mena and
Fort Smith. The family came to Mena from Searcy, Ark. and after
leaving here lived in Hot Springs for a while then later in
Little Rock, until Mr. Schmieding retired two years ago and
moving to New Mexico. He is survived by his wife, two daughters,
Mrs. St. John of Mena and Mrs. H.W. Chevalier, Lake Charles,
LA., and a son Howard A. Schmieding, Jr. of Portales, N.M.
Funeral arrangements were incomplete Sunday night. Mr. and Mrs.
St. John left Monday morning for Portales.

SNITKER, Mrs. Arlie Vern

Mrs. Arlie Vern Snitker, 75, of Kansas City, Missouri, and
former resident of Octavia, died Monday morning in a Kansas city
Hospital. She was born July 24, 1905 at Cove. Funeral service
was held at 2 p.m. Thursday afternoon in the Octavaia Baptist
Church with the Rev. Lowell Snitker and the Rev. Robert Tommason
officiating. Interment was in the Octavia Cemetery under the
direction of Beasley-Wood Funeral Home. Pallbearers were John R.
Maggard, Sr., David K. Maggard, J. Roger Brown, David J. Brown,
Allen W. Grayatt and John R. Maggard, Jr. Mrs. Snitker was the
daughter of the late William Weatherbee and Mrs. Docia Fortner
Weatherbee. She was a member of the Tabernacle Baptist Church
and had been the wife of Walter Snitker for the last 52 years,
having been married February 6, 1929 at Chilicothe, Texas.
Survivors are her husband, Walter A. Snitker, Kansas City,
Missouri; two sons, Dr. Gaylord D. Snitker, Tulsa Okla., and
Dwight W. Snitker, Otturnwa, Iowa, three daughters, Mrs. Juanita
Maggard, Kansas City, Missouri, Mrs. Wilma Brown, Lees
Summit, Missouri and Mrs. Nancy Gravatt, Sedaine ?

STANDRIDGE, Eaphy Henry (Bill)
Surnames: Tate, Jones, Domerese, Phillips
Eaphy Henry "Bill" Standridge, age 94, died at 6:00
a.m. on November 25, 2001, while at Johnson County Regional
Medical Center in Clarksville, Arkansas. He was preceded in
death by his wife, Gladys Novina (Phillips) Standridge in July
of 1987 and ten brothers and sisters.He was the son of Isaac
Newton Standridge and Alice Eliza (Tate) Standridge originally
from Rome, Georgia.
Mr. Standridge is survived by 2 sons: Newton Standridge and wife
Carol (Jones) Standridge of Norwalk, Iowa, and Dennis Standridge
and wife Kathy (Domerese) Standridge of Clarksville, Arkansas,
as well as 4 grandchildren: Steven and Michael Standridge of
Norwalk, Iowa, and Mark and Amber Standridge of Clarksville,
Arkansas.
Bill was born and raised in the Opal Community near Mena,
Arkansas, living throughout the Western United States as he
worked on various construction projects including the
construction of Vallecito Dam in Colorado from 1938 to 1941. He
enlisted in the Navy at the onset of WWII surviving serious
naval battles including the Battle of Kula Gulf during (which)
the USS Helena was sunk by Japanese torpedos on July 7, 1943,
and the near sinking of the light cruiser USS Houston on October
14, 1944. During this valiant service to our country, Mr.
Standridge received among his commendations, two purple hearts
and the nickname "Bill" while helping to operate what
was said to be the "fastest gun on the fightingest ship in
the Pacific."
Bill and Gladys were married while on leave during the war and
settled back area following the war. Mr. Standridge worked in
hospital maintenance supervision most of the rest of his life.
Retiring in 1966, he lived in Waldron and later Clarksville,
Arkansas.
Bill was a member of the VFW, American Legion and the Missionary
Baptist Church. He was an avid hunter and dog trainer/breeder
while living in Waldron, Arkansas, where he enjoyed hunting fox,
deer, wolf, and turkey.
Funeral servies were Monday, November 26, 2001 at 2:00 in the
Beasley-Wood Funeral Home Chapel in Mena AR. Interment followed
in the Lower Big Fork Cemetery in Opal, Arkansas, under the
direction of the Beasley-Wood Funeral Home.

STANDRIDGE, Mrs. J. C.
Surnames: STANDRIDGE, LACKEY, WALKER
Funeral service for Mrs. Minervia Ann Standridge, widow of the
late Jacob C. Standridge, who died at her home at Opal shortly
before noon Saturday, was held Sunday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock
at the Lower Big Fork Church with Rev. L.D. Summers officiating.
Burial at Lower Big Fork Cemetery was directed by the
Beasley-Wood Funeral Home. Pallbearers, all great-grandsons,
were, Gerald and Robert Lackey, Elgin and Sonny Standridge, Ivan
and Elvis Walker. Mrs. Standridge was born December 22, 1848, in
Gainesville, GA, and came to Polk County as a young woman. She
was married to Mr. Standridge in 1866 and he preceded her in
death 21 years ago. She spent 73 of her 94 years in the
community in which she died. She was next to the oldest resident
of the county and is survived by one daughter, Mrs. William R.
Lackey, Opal. 24 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

STEPHENS, John Henry
Surnames: Stephens, Thompson, Harrison, Thomas
John Henry Stephens, age 84, resident of Wickes, died Thursday,
Dec. 11, 1997 at the McClellan V.A. Hospital in Little Rock. He
was born August 11, 1913, in Mulberry, Kansas to the late Harry
Webster Stephens, and the late Jessie Evelyn Thompson Stephens.
Mr. Stephens served in the U.S. Army signal Corp. He was also a
radio and TV repairman, and of the Methodist faith. Survivors
include a daughter, Myrtle Thomas, Jay, Oklahoma, and four
grandchildren, Melinda Thomas, Cody Thomas, Sharon Thomas and
Chritina Thomas, all of Jay. Graveside services were held
Sunday, Dec. 14, 1997 at 1:00 p.m. at Oak Grove Cemetery in
Wickes with Bro. Mike Wilson officiating. Interment followed the
service. Beasley-Wood Funeral Home of Mena in charge of
arrangements.

One of the old settlers of the Oden community died March 8,
(1917) at the home of his son near McAllister, OK where he had
gone last fall. The remains, accompanied by 2 sons, Jake and
Frank, reached Mena and were taken to the old home where burial
was Sunday at Macedonia cemetery. He had lived at the east end
of the county for over 30 years. (Macedonia Cemetery is in
Montgomery County)

SUIT, William Thomas
Surnames: Hensley, Gordan, Joplin, Graig,
Cole, Robinson, Stinnett, Miller, Wimberly, Johnson, Russ,

Funeral service for Willam Thomas Suit, retired Polk county
farmer who died of a heart attack Monday morning at his home,
was held Tuesday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the Beasley -Wood
Chapel with the Rev. G. T.Owens, pastor of the Union Mission
Church officiating. Burial took place at Pinecrest Memorial
Park. Pallbearers were Hobart Hensley, John Gordan, Sr., John E.
Joplin, S.E. Graig, Festus Cole, Bill Robinson, J. Stinnett and
Leonard Miller. Mr.Suit, a native of Polk county, was born
August 11, 1871, at Cherry Hill, Ark. He was educated in the
public school at Cherry Hill, later served as postmaster there,
and operated a general store. With the exception of one year
when he worked in Florida during World War 11, he spent his
entire life in his native county and state. He was married to
Miss Dora Christine Wimberly of Cherry Hill, October 16, 1896,
and she preceded him in death in Mena in 1947. After serving as
postmaster at Cherry Hill he operated a farm near there for a
number of years before retiring about 20 years ago and moving to
Mena. Mr. Suit is survived by a daughter, Mrs.Noble Johnson,
Shreveport, La.; two sons, John Ivan Suit, Mena; Hazel Suit,
Southend, Ind.; three sisters: Mrs. Ida Russ, Bowling Green,
Fla., Mrs.Tinnie Templeton, Manitou, Colo.; Mrs.Elvira Sumpter,
Oklahoma City, Okla. and four grandchildren.
