Funeral service for Mrs. Alice Potter Nelson, wife of Oscar E. Nelson of
Zafra, Oklahoma, who died of a heart attack Thrusday morning, March 6, at
her home, was held Sunday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock at the Free Holiness
Church at Smithville, Okla. with the Rev. Lee Blake, pastor officiating.
Burial at Smithville Cemetery was directed by the Beasley -Wood Funeral
Home. The pallbearers were A.Moyer,Walter and Roy Phillips, Alfred Smith,
Luther Page and Edd Thomas. Mrs. Nelson was born June 16,1886 in Clayburn
county, Ark. She was married in that county to Mr. Nelson 41 years ago and
shortly after their wedding they moved to the Zafra community where she
spent the remainder of her life. She was a member of the Holiness church
and active in its work until her health failed about a year ago.Besides
her husband, Mrs. Nelson is survived by a son Nathan C. Nelson, Modesto,
Calif. and three grandchildren: Benjamin, Jimmy and Oletha Nelson, also of
Modesto, Calif. and serveral nieces and nephews.

Nichols, Loda
Surnames: Nichols, Johnson
Loda Selma Nichols passed away in Sacramento, CA, on March 13, 1998. She
was born in Hatfield, Arkansas, May 8, 1908. Loda was preceded in death by
her parents Wesley L. and Annie E. Nichols, a baby sister Jewell, and four
brothers, Arley, Iley, Dewey and Kenneth. She is survived by her sister,
Jettie Nichols Johnson and two nephews, Wesley Johnson and Jack Nichols.
All of the Nichols children were born in Polk County, all graduated from
Hatfield High School. After graduation Loda attended business school in
Memphis before taking a job as a telephone operator with Southwestern Bell
in Mena. Prior to WWII the telephone office was located on the second
floor of the bank building at the corner of Janssen and Mena Streets.
Margaret Ogden was the chief and Bill Swizerhoff was the telephone man.
Loda and five other operators were "the" telephone company. Loda
followed her father into Masonic work, belonging to the Mena Chapter of
the Eastern Star until moving to Los Angeles in 1942. She worked as a "long
distance" operator for Pacific Telephone in their Hollywood office.
In those days all toll calls were placed with the long distance operator.
Loda was a great movie fan and took great pleasure in serving many movie
stars and well known people in the movie industry of that era. After
retirement in 1969, Loda and her sister, Jettie, bought a home in
Carmichael, California, near Jettie's son Wesley "Bobby"
Johnson. Services were conducted on March 17, 1998, at East Lawn Sierra
Hills Memorial Park by Chaplain Ivan Paulk and the Rose Chapter, No. 292,
of the Eastern Star.

Samuel A. Nichols
Surnames: Nichols, Owens, McCulley, House, Gann, McAllister, Thweatt,
Stinnett, Oglesby, Wyatt
Funeral service for Samuel A. Nichols, retired farmer and stockman of the
Zafra community, was held Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock at the
Nichols cemetery west of Hatfield, with Rev. Bennie Fisher officiating.
Interment was in the family plot in the Nichols cemetery, directed by the
Geyer Funeral Home. Pallbearers were Preston Owens, Omar McCulley, Ollie
House, Jewell Gann, Cecil McAllister and Hezzie Thweatt. Samuel A. Nichols
was born November 17, 1867, at West Valley, Arkanas. He was 84 years of
age. He had spent his entire life around Hatfield, Arkansas and Zafra,
Oklahoma. He was united in marriage to Miss Cora Lee Stinnett in 1888 at
Hatfield. He was a farmer and stockman, who had done much to develop the
area in which he lived. He helped to pioneer western Arkansas and was a
kind husband and loving father. He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife,
Mrs.Cora Lee Nichols; two daughters, Mrs.Fannie Oglesby, Hatfield, and
Mrs. Lanie Wyatt of Quinton,Okla.; two sons, Ervin Nichols, Zafra,Okla;
and John Nichols of Rock Island, Ill. Also three brothers, one sister,
nine grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
