Funeral services for Ples Cagle, former Polk County
resident, was held on Tuesday, June 4, at Brownwood, Tex., with
burial at Winchell, Tex. Mr. Cagle died of a heart attact early
Saturday morning June 1, at Waynesboro, Miss., where he was
visiting a daughter, Mrs. O. E. Whitley. Mr. Cagle was born in
October, 1898, at Board Camp, and moved to Brownwood, Tex., in
1949. He was a member of the Baptist Church. Survivors include
his widow, Mrs. Edna Cagle, Brownwood, four sons, Willie Cagle,
Roswell, N. Mex.; Wayne Cagle, Chicago; Gene Cagle, Irving,
Tex.; and Raymond Cagle, stationed in Germany; five daughters,
Mrs. O. E. Whitley, Waynesboro, Miss.; Mrs. Donald Martin,
Irving, Tex.; Mrs. Sarah Brooks, Amarillo, Tex.; Mrs. Mary
Siegfried and Mrs. Jane Egger, of Brownwood; also 27
grandchildren and one great-grandchild

Funeral service for Lester Jack Campbell, 65-year-old longtime
Polk County resident, who died July 13, was held Thursday
afternoon at two o'clock in the Beasley-Wood chapel, with the
Rev. Osborne White and the Rev. Leonard Liles officiating.
Interment was in the Rocky cemetery under the direction of the
Beasley-Wood Funeral Home. Casketbearers were Paul Cunningham,
Gerald Johnson, Travis Turner, J.B. Stevenson, Lester White and
John Ward. Mr. Campbell was born Feb. 26, 1906, in Pike County,
Ark., his parents being the late Dr. C.A. Campbell and Mrs.
Lillie May Boen Campbell. He was a member of the Baptist church
and had been a resident of this area practically all his life.
Survivors include seven brothers, H.E. and Earl C. Campbell,
Mena, Ralph E. Campbell, Sallisaw, Okla., John Ross Campbell and
Doyle Campbell, Hobbs, N. Mex., George Wayne Campbell, Presidio,
Texas, and Bill Campbell, Waldron; six sisters, Mrs. Alma Goss,
Mrs. Ann McMillan, Mrs. Dean Smith, Mrs. Marie Brown, Mrs. Ida
Lamb and Mrs. Sarah Burris, all of Mena; also several nieces and
nephews.

CARDER, Thad
Surnames: CARDER, KINSER, WHITE, PIERCE, CUNNINGHAM
Thad M. Carder, after a brief illness passed to his
last reward at 2:15 A.M. Saturday, the end resulting from a
stroke at the age of 78 years. Funeral services were held
Saturday at the home on 1215 Janssen Avenue. Burial at White Oak
Cemetery by the Masonic Lodge, of which he had long been a
member. Thadeus Mack Carder was born in Virginia June 7, 1832.
As manhood approached he moved to Tennessee where on June 6,
1856, he married Miss Matilda C. KINSER, who survives him. Of
this marriage 13 children were born; six of whom are living and
attended the funeral. Most being at the bedside at death. They
are as follows: Samuel, Muse, OK; John, Honey Grove, Texas;
Minnie, wife of H. White, Antlers, OK; Amanda, wife of J. N.
Pierce of Arkinda, AR; Josephine, wife of J. W. Cunningham of
Mena; Oscar, the youngest son at home. The deceased raised the
1st Company out of Bradley, Tennessee, in the early days of the
Civil War, being elected its captain. He served through the war,
part of the time being under General John Morgan, being advanced
to the rank of Major. He came to Polk County in 1874, settling
at Dallas. While there he was twice elected County Judge and
once to the State Legislature, giving a good account of his
stewardship. He moved to Mena when the town was established and
was its first Mayor.

Carter, Frank
middle aged local resident, suffered a heart attack about 2 o'clock Wednesday
afternoon and died almost immediately. He was stricken while standing on the
back loading platform of Maltby's Grocery Store on the southside and Sheriff
Robert Hunter who was summoned reported the man dead when he arrived. No inquest
was deemed necessary, with death being attributed to natural causes. The body
was removed to the Beasley-Wood Funeral Home where it was being held Thursday
pending funeral arrangements. It was thought the funeral would likely be sometime
Thursday afternoon. Burial will take place at Pine Crest Memorial Park.

Mrs. Minnie A. Carter
Funeral service for Mrs. Minnie A. Carter, 71-year-old Vandervoort
resident, was held Wednesday, Aug. 30, in the Vandervoort Missionary
church, with the Rev. Walter Mease officiating. Interment was in the
Center cemetery, directed by the Beasley-Wood Funeral Home. Mrs.
Carter died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Dick Lewis, at Fort Smith.
Pallbearers were J. B. Stevenson, Willie Daniel, Floyd Daniel, Doyne
Davis, Otis Johnston and Dale Watkins.
Mrs. Carter was born March 18, 1889, at Vandervoort. Her first
husband, John Gordon, preceded her in death in 1924, and in 1926 she
was married to William J. Carter, who died in April, 1944. Mrs.
Carter was a member of the Grand Avenue Baptist church of Fort Smith.
Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Dick Lewis, Fort Smith; one
brother, Henry McMillan, Oak Grove, La.; one sister, Mrs. ?????
Blanton, Goliad, (?) Tex.; two grandchildren and several nieces and
nephews.
Carter, Warren M.

Funeral service for Warren M. Carter was held Friday afternoon at 2:30
in the Mission Church at Vandehvoort with Rev. Walter Mease
officiating. Burial was in Witherspoon Cemetery at Vandervoort under
direction of the Geyer-Horne Funeral Home. Pallbearers were Bus
Stevenson, Dale Watkins, Dolan Daniel, Buck Cureton, Otis Johnson and
Cleo Keeney.
Mr. Carter was born Aug. 5, 1896, near Vandervoort, and died May 2,
1961, in Mena. He was 64 years of age. He moved from his birthplace
to Wardville, Okla., but returned to Polk County in 1916. On May 29,
1918, he was united in marriage with Miss Ethel McMellon in Howard
County. He had been a member of the Methodist Church for 40 years.
Besides his wife, he is survived by one son, Nesbit Carter of Little
Rock; one daughter, Mrs. Dale McDaniel of Texarkana; one brother, John
Carter of Sacramento, Calif.; one sister, Mrs. Callie Laverty of
Oklahoma City, and six grandchildren.
Chrisman, Lena Christine

Funeral service for Mrs. Lena Christine Chrisman of Grannis, who
died May 4, at her home there, was held Sunday afternoon at 1:30
o'clock at the Beasley - Wood Chapel with the Rev. Mark Vaught,
pastor of the First Methodist Church officiating. Burial took
place at Pinecrest Memorial Park. Pallbearers were Harry
Beutelshies, Amos Lawrence, Cue Stemple, Lewis L. Ferry, Jr.,
Rhea Payne and Fred Youngblood. Mrs. Chrisman was born Feb. 11,
1883, at Omaha, Neb.,where in 1911 she was married to Charles B.
Chrisman and for the past 12 years had been living at Grannis.
Besides her husband, she is survived by a son, Wallace N.
Chrisman, McNary, Ariz.; and four sisters, Mrs. Carrie Williams,
Los Angeles, Calif.; Mrs. Bertha Christmas, Mrs.Ruth Neef and
Mrs. L. C. Wallis, Omaha, Neb. Relatives from out of town
attending the funeral included Wallace Chrisman, McNary, Ariz;
Miss Ruth Neef and Miss Kathrine Williams, Omaha, Neb.

Mr. Ulmer Cleland, Sr., age 84, resident of Mena, died Sunday,
December 14, 1997 in the Rich Mtn. Manor Nursing Home in Mena.
He was born July 1, 1913, in New Orleans, Louisiana, the son of
the late Alex Cleland and the late Susie Davis Cleland. He made
his home in Mena since 1990 moving from Hot Springs. He served
in the Merchant Marines in WWII and was a painter and a member
of the Allied Trades #1008. Survivors include a daughter, Naomi
Tomasich, Bay St. Louis, MS; 3 sons, Bobby Cleland, Covington,
LA, Tommy Cleland, New Orleans, LA, and Alvin Cleland, Big Fork,
AR; 18 grandchildren, 37 great grandchildren, 2 great-great
grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in
death by 3 sons, Ulmer Cleland, Jr., Donald Cleland and Johnny
Cleland; 1 brother, Parker Cleland; 1 sister, Lottie Fitzmorris
and 1 granddaughter. Mr. Cleland was sent for cremation and
arrangements are under the direction of Hall Funeral Service of
Mena.

Funeral service for Mrs. Alice Canary Cunningham, wife of G.
Hamp Cunningham, of the old Potter community who died Saturday
morning, was held Monday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the Old
Potter Presbyterian church with the pastor, Miss L. Dorothy
Green, officiating. Burial at Pine Crest Memorial Park was
directed by the Beasley-Wood Funeral Home. Pallbearers were
Walter Hicks, J. W. Montgomery, C.A. Smith, Bud Bennett, L.
L.Wells and I. A. Foster. A native of Polk County, Mrs.
Cunningham was born April 20, 1889, within a mile of where she
lived at the time of death, having spent her entire life in that
community. She was married to General Hamp Cunningham in Mena,
April 14, 1912. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church.
Besides her husband she is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Ruby
Groover, Mena; Mrs. Novella Reynolds, Artesia, N.Mex.; two sons
Paul and Raymond Cunningham, Mena; three sisters, Mrs.Minnie
Cunningham, Zafra, Okla. Mrs. Richard Hughes, Old Potter, Mrs.
Viola Cunningham, Mena; two brothers, Ervin and Marvin White,

Funeral service for Christopher Columbus Cunningham, widely
known Polk county and eastern Oklahoma farmer who died Tuesday
at St. Micheals Hospital at Texarkana, was held Thursday
afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Beasley - Wood Chapel with the
Rev. Lee Blake, pastor of the Free Holiness Church at
Smithville, Okla, officiating. Burial was at Pinecrest Memorial
Park. The pallbearers were Clifton Cunningham, Lesley
Moseley,Walter Edwards, Woodrow Dilbeck, Everett Sutphin, Kim
Floyd, Tex Pierce and Wallace Anderson. Mr.Cunningham was born
January 5, 1886, in Polk County near where the town of Mena was
established 10 years later. In 1917 he was married to Miss. Nona
Shane at Idabel, Okla. He had been a member of the Holiness
church since 1917. For the past three years he had been farming
with Oscar E. Nelson in the Beachton, Okla. communtiy. Besides
his wife he is survived by a daughter, Mrs.Winnie Bell Townsend,
Texarkana; a sister Mrs. D.W. Ross, Oklahoma City; six brothers,
Robert, Bud, Aaron, Hamp, Carl and Frank Cunningham all of Mena,
and two grandsons.

Funeral service for Iley Cleveland Cunningham was held Monday
August 23, at 2:00 p.m. in the Geyer Chapel, with Rev. Benny
Fisher and Rev. Riley Donica officiating. Burial was in Pine
Crest Cemetery under the direction of the Geyer Funeral Home.
Pallbearers were Preston Self, L. R. Batey, Raymond Owens, Homer
Smith, and J.C. Moore. Mr.Cunningham was born Feb. 9, 1886, at
Old Dallas and died August 21, 1965, at Idabel,Okla., at the age
of 79 years. He had been living the past 33 years in the Zafra
community and was a member of the Zafra Church of Christ. He was
united in marriage with Miss Minnie White in 1915, who survives
him. Besides his wife he is survived by four sons, Grover
Cunningham, Smithville, Okla., Virgil Cunningham, Hatfield,
Ark., Marion Cunningham, Zafra, Iley Hilton Cunningham, North
Little Rock, three daughters, Myrtle Laverne Cunningham, Zafra,
Evalina Juanita Guthrie and Willie Mae Hopper of North Little
Rock, and one sister Mrs. D. A. May of Lakewood, Calif.

Cunningham, James
James Cunningham, son of Mr. and Mrs.Tom Cunningham, died
Friday, March 12, 1909. He left a father, mother, four brothers,
two sisters, a wife and three children to mourn his loss.He was
30 years of age and was once a member of the Presbyterian
Church. He was laid to rest in Odd Fellow's Cemetery.

Mrs. Minnie Cunningham of Zafra, Okla. died Friday at DeQueen,
Ark. Funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon in the
Beasley-Wood Chapel at 2:00 p.m.with Rev. Nathan Nelson
officiating. Interment was in Pine Crest Memorial Park under the
direction of the Beasley-Wood Funeral Home. Pallbearers were
Jerry Huff, John Davis, Gene Ross, Ronnie Baker, Harold Smith
and Bill Richmond. She was born January 18, 1893, at Mena, her
age being 84 years. Mrs. Cunningham was the daughter of the late
Mr.and Mrs. Spencer White and was united in marriage to Iley
Cunningham December 19, 1915, at Mena. He preceded her in death
August 21, 1965. She was a member of the Pentecostal Church.
Survivors are four sons, Grover Cunningham of Smithville, Okla.,
Virgil Cunningham of Broken Bow, Okla., Marion Eugene Cunningham
of Zafra, Okla., and Hilton Cunningham of Little Rock, Ark.;
three daughters: Miss Myrtle Cunningham of Zafra, Okla., Mrs.
Juanita Guthrie of North Little Rock, and Mrs.Willie Mae Hopper
of Little Rock; and one sister, Mrs. Belle Hughes of Mena, 29
grandchildren and 32 greatgrandchildren.

Another Pioneer Mother Brought to Polk County For Burial
Remains of Mrs. Nannie Cunningham, aged 77, widow of the late
Tom Cunningham, were brought to Mena Friday afternoon for burial
at Odd Fellows Cemetery. Death came to the aged woman at
Heavener, where for some years past she had made her home with a
daughter, Mrs. Almer May. The body was brought to Mena by motor
hearse and at 2 o'clock was moved to the cemetery for final
interment.

W. J. Carter
Funeral service for W. J. Carter, who died at his home east of Vandervoort, Thursday was held Friday at 2 o'clock at the Center church by Rev. Mease. Burial was in the Center Cemetery, directed by the Geyer Funeral Home.
Mr. Carter was a native of Texas but came to Polk county more than 50 years ago before mena was founded and followed farming until he became ill about two months ago.
He is survived by his wife, three sons, Warren of Vandervoort; Johnnie of Nevada; and Clarence of Ft. Smith. One daughter, Mrs. Callie Laverty of Texarkana, Texas. One brother, T. J. Carter, of Oklahoma City. Eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
NOTE: This was William John "Billie" Carter, son of James Butler Carter and Parnecia Bass Carter.

WILLIAM B. CARTER
Funeral service for William B. Carter was held Thursday afternoon, July 18, at 1 o'clock in Vandervoort Mission Church, with Rev. Walter Mease and Rev. Carl Bell officiating. Burial was in the Center cemetery under the direction of the Geyer Funeral Home.
Casketbearers were Carl Schoolfield, Houston Blanton, Charley Smedley, Tom White, Henry Sandefur and Guy Flemens.
Mr. Carter was born Feb. 4, 1895, at Hartley, and died July 14, 1968, at Venice, Calif. at the age of 73 years. He grew to manhood in Polk County and had been making his home in California for the past several years. He was preceded in death by his wife in 1934.
He is survived by two sons, Willie Carter, Lebanon, Ore., and Edward Carter,
Albany, Ore.; two daughters, Mrs. Kyle Singh, Venice, Calif., and Mrs. Pauline
Darney, Norwalk, Calif.; one sister, Mrs. Abbie Parsons, Fort Smith; also 13
grandchildren.

Ethel Carter Owen, 87, of Texarkana, Ark., died Monday, March 12, 1990, in a local hospital.
Mrs. Owen was born April 6, 1902, at Mineola, Ark., and was a member of Vandervoort United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her son, Nesbitt Carter, who died in 1985.
Survivors include one daughter, Maydell McDaniel of Texarkana; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Weatherspoon Cemetery, Vandervoort.
Burial is under the direction of Geyer-Quillin Funeral Home, Mena, Ark.

Nesbitt A. Carter
Nesbitt A. Carter, aged 62, of 6712 Carolina Drive, a retired line haul supervisor
for Arkansas Best Freight Company, died Thursday. Born in Dierks (Howard County),
son of Ethel Carter Owen of Little Rock and the late Warren Carter, he was a
member of Westwood Nazarene Church. Other survivors are his wife, Virginia Roberts
Carter; two sons, Leon Carter of Bossier City, La. and Harold Carter of Little
Rock; a daughter, Barbara Golden of Little Rock; a sister, Maydell McDaniel
of Texarkana, and five grandchildren. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at
Griffin Leggett Healey and Roth by Rev. David Brantley. Burial will be in Forest
Hills Memorial Park.

The remains of Mrs. Millie Carter, wife of T. A. Carter, were taken to Rocky
cemetery Friday afternoon and interred in the family lot. The funeral services
at the grave were conducted by Rev. A. S. Daniels. Mrs. Carter was 66 years
of age and had lived near Rocky. She is a sister of Mrs. Murp Cummings, a well-known
Rock farmer, Mrs. Carter is survived by her aged husband and one daughter.
