Fred John Scharfhausen Jr., 69, 308 Industrial Dr., Marked Tree, died June 9, 2000 at the family residence. Born Nov. 18, 1930, in Chicago, he had lived in the Trumann and Marked Tree area for the past 25 years. He was a retired truck driver and cabinetmaker, veteran of the USAF and Korean Conflict, member of the VFW and of the Catholic faith. Preceding him in death was his late wife, Ina Louise Glidewell Scharfhausen, in 1992, one sister and was the son of the late Fred J. Sr. and Myrtle Haun Scharfhausen. Survivors include his son, Jeff Scharfhausen of Wheaton, IL, three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Services were held Monday morning, June 12, in the chapel of Thompson Funeral Home in Trumann with the Rev. Mike Henderson officiating. Burial will follow at Jonesboro Memorial Park Cemetery. Pallbearers were Blake Duffy, Butch Gann, Scotty Spence, Russ Thomey, Keith Willis and Tom Worley. Honorary pallbearers were Charlie Riley and Jimmy Dale Bullock.
Mrs. Selma W. Schwarz, 95, of Belleville, IL, and formerly of Weiner, died Thursday at the Grange Home in Mascoutah, IL. She was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Weiner. Survivors include three sons, John Roth of Lambertville, MI, William Roth of Marble Hill, MO, and Philip Roth of Manchester, MO; one stepson, Leo Schwarz of Weiner; one daughter, Georgette Scheibel of Belleville; one stepdaughter, Frances Bornhoft of Sterling, CO; one sister, Geneva Thompson of Walsh, IL; 19 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her first husband, her second husband, Conrad Schwarz; one daughter; one stepson; one sister and two brothers. Funeral services will be Tuesday morning at 10 at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, with Father Jim Dixon officiating. Burial will follow in St. Anthony's Catholic Cemetery under the direction of Langford's Funeral Service of Jonesboro. Pallbearers will be S.P. Schwarz, John Schwarz, H.J. Mrs. Willene Sana Scoggins, 62, of Weiner, died Sunday at her home. She was a native of the Walnut Ridge area and had lived in the Weiner area for the past 30 years. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother. Survivors include her husband, George "Johnny" Scoggins of the home; two sons, John Dennis Scoggins and John Dennis Scoggins, both of Weiner; four daughthers, Judy Ann Taylor and Carolyn Sue Wright, both of Weiner, Linda Jean Hollis of Jonesboro and Brenda Kay Broach of Blytheville; one brother, Willie Bennett of Hoxie; three sisters, her twin, Geraline Barndon of Jacksonville, FL, Ruby Powers of Bono and Elsie Bristow of Walnut Ridge; 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Funeral Services for the late Mrs. Mattie Scott 79, of Trumann AR will be Wednesday February 18, 1987 at 1:00 P.M. New Rising Sun M.B. Church in Trumann, AR. Born January 4, 1908 at Marvell, AR to the union of Richard and Louise Williams. She departed this life February 12, 1987 at 4:00 p.m. at her home. She accepted Christ at an early age and joined the Asberry Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. A.L. Taylor. In 1939 she moved to Trumann and the Judd Hill area and joined the Rising Sun Baptist Church. Where she diligently and faithfully served until her death she was a member of the St. Matthew chapter #351 Order of the Eastern Star of Marked Tree, AR for the past 26 years. She married the late Rev. C.C. Scott in 1929, who proceeded her in death in 1976. To this union four children were born. Two sons who proceeded her in death, John W. Scott, June of 1976, Freddie L. Scott, June of 1986. Two daughters Mary L. Richardson of the home, Nettie B. Moore of Denver CO, one sister, Mrs. Alma J. Williams of Portsmouth RI. Fifteen grandchildren, and eighteen great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousin, and friends. HUGH D. SEVERS DIES WEDNESDAY IN MEMPHIS HOSPITAL - Hugh Deputy Severs, 75, a citizen of this city all his life, died at 8 o'clock Wednesday morning in Kennedy Veterans Hospital in Memphis. It was only a few weeks ago that he was going around town getting contributions for the American Legion Christmas basket fund of which he had been chairman for several years. During this time he complained of feeling bad and on December 8 he brought his final list of contributions for publication and said he had collected $1275, a record for this fund and that he was quitting to enter the hospital. He entered December 11 for tests and observation and expected to return home the next day for Chhristmas holidays but the tests proved to be bad and cancer has spread over his entire body. Born in Harrisburg September 24, 1893, he was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Severs. He worked as a boy and young man in the L.C. Griffin Grocery Store and later owned his own business, Severs Grocery, on Main Stree for about 40 years, retiring a few years ago. He was a member of the Harrisburg United Methodist church and American Legion. He was a member of the Poinsett County Board of Education for 25 years and was chairman at the time of his death. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. H.D. (Vera Freeman) Severs, one sister, Mrs. Kate Hancock of Memphis. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 o'clock Thurdsday (today) at the Methodist church, with the pastor, Rev. Bob Orr, officiating. Burial will be in Harrisburg Memorial Park Cemetery with Jackson Funeral Home in charge.
Mrs. Vera Freeman Severs, 87, a life-long resident of Harrisburg died Wednesday, June 22, at St. Bernard's Regional Medical Center, Jonesboro. She was the widow of Hugh D. Severs, retired grocery merchant. Born in Harrisburg, May 9, 1896, she was the last of seven children of the late L.D. Freeman, Sr., founder of THE MODERN NEWS, and the late Mary Eliza Beard Freeman. Among the seven was a twin sister, Era Marguerite Parks, who died Dec. 26, 1980. A retiree from the Harrisburg Post Office with 25 years of service, Mrs. Severs, was also a retired schoolteacher and had taught in the Harrisburg School for 25 years. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Harrisburg, a member of the Retired Teachers Association and a charter member of the Women's Literacy Club. Surviving are four nephews, Edward Freeman of Bristol, VA, Charles Van Freeman of North Little Rock, Dr. Robert King Freeman of Jonesboro and David H. Freeman of Atlanta, GA; five nieces, Mrs. Martha Ann Parks Donoho of Ft. Smith, Mrs. Bettye Freeman Fullerton of North Little Rock, Mrs. Patsy Freeman Carpenter of Memphis, TN, Mrs. Shirley Freeman Foust of Jonesboro and Mrs. Elaine Freeman Nix of Harrisburg. Funeral services were held at 2:00 Friday afternoon at First United Methodist Church with the pastor, Rev. J.M. Rogers, officiating. Burial was in the Harrisburg Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Jackson Funeral Home. Mrs. Eula Shamlin, 94, of Marked Tree died Tuesday at Three Rivers Nursing Home in Marked Tree. A Baldwin, Miss., native, she was a homemaker and was a member of Whitton Baptist Church. Survivors include a son, Jerry Shamlin of Fulton, MS.; four daughters, Ruby Payne of Chicago, IL., Bearnice Brewington of Tyronza, Dean Warhurst of West Memphis and Arbie Dale Miller of Harrisburg; 14 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jessie Shamlin. Funeral services will be held this afternoon at 2 at Wilson Funeral Home of Tyronza, with Al Presley officiating. Burial will follow at Tyronza Cemetery.
MRS. W.D. SHELTON OF MARKED TREE DIES MONDAY. - Mrs. Eva Neely Shelton, 84, died at 10:30 Monday night at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. Fred Berry in Marked Tree. Mrs. Shelton suffered a stroke two years ago, and had been critically ill since that time. She was in a hospital for about three months, and had been at the home of her daughter for the past 21 months. Mrs. Shelton was the wife of W.D. (Billy) Shelton, who survives her. He served as Sheriff and Collector of the County for four years, and during this time the family lived in this city on Brooks Street. She was born October 17, 1881 in Jonesboro and had been a resident of Marked Tree 63 years, and was a member of the Methodist church. Funeral services were held at the Methodish Church in Marked Tree Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 with the pastor Rev. Byron McSpadden assisted by Dr. Fred Keller of Jonesboro officiating. Surviving besides her husband and daughter are, one grandson, Jimmy Berry of Cardwell, Missouri; two brothers, Bill Neely of Jonesboro and Cleve Neely of Leachville; a number of nieces and nephews. Burial was in Marked Tree Cemetery with Murphy Funeral Home of that city in charge. Pallbearers were: O.V. Keadle, Gordon Griffin, Reuben Griffin, Lyle Williams, Lon Berry, Pete Morrisett, Claude Neely and Albert Doss.
W.D. SHELTON OF MARKED TREE DIES - W.D. (Billy) Shelton, 92, well known citizen of Marked Tree, died Tuesday morning at 9:28 in the Nursing Unit of St. Bernard's Hospital in Jonesboro following a long illness. Mr. Shelton had been in ill health the past year and after being in the hospital for several months was transferred tothe nursing unit. He served as Sheriff of Poinsett County three terms, from 1918 to 1925, and was retired merchant and landowner. He was a member of the Christian Church and a Mason. William David Shelton was born in Jonesboro, January 16, 1876 and moved to Marked Tree in 1902. In 1903, he married Miss Eva Neeley and during these years, they lived in Marked Tree, with the exception of the time they lived here while Mr. Shelton was Sheriff. Mrs. Shelton died March 21, 1966 and a daughter, Inez also preceded him in death. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Fred Berry of Marked Tree and one grandson, Jimmy S. Berry of Cardwell, MO. Funeral services will be Thursday afternoon at three o'clock at the Methodist Church in Marked Tree with the pastor, Rev. William Wilder, and a former pastor, Rev. Byrost McFadden of the Methodist church of Forrest City, officiating. Burial will be in Marked Tree Cemetery with Masonic rites at the graveside. Mrs. Izola Shepherd, 67, of Marked Tree, died Wednesday at the Regional Medical Center of NEA in Jonesboro. A lifelong resident of Marked Tree, she was retired from Delta Wood Manufacturing Co. of Trumann and was a member of St. John Missionary Baptist Church of Marked Tree. Survivors include four sons, John Anderson Sr. and Willie Anderson, both of South Bend, IN, Robert Shepherd Jr. of Memphis, and Isaiah Shepherd Sr. of Jonesboro; four daughters, Shirley Moore of Marked Tree, Terrie Shepherd and Laverne Shepherd, both of Jonesboro, and Cheri Perry of Little Rock; two sisters, Elnora Anderson of Chicago and Rosie Joe of Milwaukee, WI; three brothers, Ivory Anderson of Milwaukee, Leroy Anderson of Wynne and Albert Charles "Alto" Anderson of Jonesboro; 14 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Mrs. Louise Leathel Shinall, 63, of Lepanto, died Friday at Three Rivers Nursing Home in Marked Tree. She was a member of the Church of Christ in Lepanto and was a homemaker. Survivors include one daughter, Deborah June Barnes of Lepanto; two sons, Grady Shinall of Olive Branch, MS, and Terry T. Mrs. Lena Mai Simmons, 96, of Harrisburg, died Thursday at the Regional Medical Center of NEA. Born at Parkin, Mrs. Simmons was a retired teacher who taught first grade at Harrisburg Elementary School for 35 years. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church at Harrisburg, where she served as superintendent of Sunday Schools and Sunday School teacher. She was a charter member of the Women's Missionary Society, a former member of the Women's Literary Club and a member of the choir. She was also a member of the Arkansas Education Association, the Arkansas Retired Teachers' Association and the Poinsett County Retired Teachers' Association. Survivors include a daughter, Marshalene Prescott Jordan; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 3 Sunday afternoon at the First United Methodist Church in Harrisburg with Rev. Tom Sullinger officiating. Burial will follow in Harrisburg Memorial Park Cemetery. J.W. Singleton, age 69, died at his home here last Friday, August 14, 1934, after an illness which confirmed him in his home for many months. Mr. Singleton was one of Poinsett county's best citizens. Mr. Singleton moved to Harrisburg from southern Missouri thirty years ago. He served as Mayor of this city for four terms and as Justice of the Peace for Bolivar township for ten years. He was formerly engaged in cotton ginning and for several years operated an electric shoe repair shop here but retired because of ill health. Mr. Singleton was of a lovable disposition and his friends were numbered only by his acquaintances. He is survived by his wife, five daughters, Mrs. R.V. Peck, of Durham, NC; Mrs. Guy Beard, of Little Rock; Mrs. W. C. Adams, of Piggott; Mrs. Clarence Woodrum, of Buffalo Lick and Miss Nellie Singleton of this city; and three sons, Robert an attorney of Lebanon, TN; Elvis a merchant of Marked Tree and D. A. Singleton of this city. The funeral service was held at the Methodist church Saturday afternoon at three o'clock by Rev. E.J. George W. Sisson, 92, of Cherry Valley died Sunday, Oct. 6 at Cross County Hospital in Wynne. Born Dec. 29, 1898, in Black Oak, he was the son of the late John and Mishie Seaborn Sisson and had been a resident of Cross County since 1926. He was a member of the Hydrick Baptist Church of Cherry Valley. His wife, Mary Darthula Ramsey Sisson, and two sons, Leon Sisson and Wayne Griffin Sisson preceded him in death. Mrs. Ruey Sitcler, 84, of Harrisburg, died Friday morning in St. Bernard's Regional Medical Center in Jonesboro. Born in Camden, TN, she was a retired school teacher, having taught in the Harrisburg School District and at Delta Vo-Tech at Marked Tree. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Harrisburg where she had been a Sunday School teacher and a member of the Golden Rule Sunday School Class. She was active in the Wesleyan Service Guild and served as president. She was also president of the Progressive Century Club of Harrisburg and had served on the Poinsett County Board of Education. In 1998, she and her sister, Evelyn Phillips, were co-grand marshals of the Harrisburg Christmas Parade in honor of their community service. Surviving are a son, Phillip Sitcler of Harrisburg, and one sister, Evelyn Phillips of Harrisburg. She was preceded in death by her husband, E. L. Sitcler. Mrs. Betty McCauley Smith, 76, of Weiner, died Thursday at Plantation Homes in Trumann. Born in Paragould, she had lived in Weiner since 1945. A former telephone operator for the Cotton Belt Railroad., she is a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and the Weiner United Methodist Church. She is survived by her husband, B.T. Smith Jr. of the home; one son, Bobby Joe Smith of Weiner; one daughter, Becky Sue Hansen of Jonesboro; and three grandchildren. Delphia Raye Kain Smith, 91, of Trumann died Wednesday, Dec. 24, at Regional Medical Center of NEA. Born in Lake City, she had lived in Paragould before moving to Trumann 33 years ago. She was a homemaker and was of the Pentecoastal belief. Survivors include three daughters, JoAnn Angel of Yuma, Ariz, Elaine Brecheen of Trumann and Sandra Dobbins of Donophan, Mo.; five sons, D.C. "Teen" Smith of Lake Providence, La., Gerald Smith of Harrisburg, Jackie Smith and Larry Smith, both of Trumann, and Ray Smith of Calimesa, Calif.; two brothers, Rufus Kain of Fla. and Richard Kain of Apple Valley, Calif.; 35 grandchildren; 64 great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Cletis Smith, two daughters, three sons, her parents, three sisters and four brothers. Larry William Smith, 47, of Marked Tree died Thursday at Regional Medical Center of NEA. He was a self-employed painter and had worked for Williams Electric in Marked Tree. Mary Sue Smith, 54, of Trumann, died Monday at St. Bernard's Regional Medical Center in Jonesboro. Mrs. Smith was born July 28, 1945 at Portersville, Mo., to the late Kennard and O'Retha Lawrence Garrison. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Buddy Garrison. She was a homemaker and was of the Pentecostal belief. Ralph O. Smith, 88, Mountain View, formerly of Tyronza, died Sunday in Rebsamen Medical Center in Jacksonville. He was a retired farmer, a Methodist and a WWII veteran. He was preceded in death by his wife, Cornelia Watson Smith. Surviving are three sons, Bill Smith of Atlanta, GA, Jerry Smith of Ward and Frank Smith of Piggott; one daughter, Susan Ferguson of Sherman, TX; two brothers, Johnny Smith of Washington, D.C., and Arthur Smith of Fort Worth, TX; one sister, Inez Cobb of Tupelo, MS; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. KINDLE FIRE WITH TRACTOR FUEL; THREE ARE KILLED. - The Earle Fire Department answered an alarm at the home of Robert Smith in Norvell Tuesday morning about 11 o'clock which proved to be one of the worst tragedies in this community in recent years. The fire, occasioned by kindling a fire with tractor fuel and the resultant explosion, destroyed the home and took the life of the mother and two children. Mrs. Robert Smith, 28, the mother, died in the Baptist Hospital in Memphis at 4:00 o'clock Wednesday morning, closely followed by an infant son, George Enos Smith, 5 weeks of age, who died at 7 o'clock. Little Robert Dale Smith, aged 2, failed to escape the flames. Robert Smith, the husband escaped the flames. He was at work in out of his home. He was at work in Earle helping on repairs at the home of Martin Klindworth, on whose farm he lived. Three other of the Smith children also escaped injury. Betty Jean, 7, was at school, Wilma June, 5, and Jo Ann, 3, "must have been out in the yard playing." said Mr. Smith. "I think my wife's cousin, Christine James, who lives nearby helped get them out of the fire," he said. His wife was only to explain that the blast occurred when she poured tractor fuel on live coals in the stove. Mr. Smith and his family previously lived at Cherry Valley, Ark., before moving on the Klindworht place two years ago. The body of Robert Dale, was taken to the Holt Funeral Home in Earle. Earle firemen, acting without authority as it was out of their jurisdiction, responding to the call were helpless to combat the blaze as Norvell has no fire hose connections. However, using their booster tank equipment, they cooled the embers and recovered the remains of little Robert Dale. Burial at Bay Village Cemetery.
Robert Lee Smith, 88, of Harrisburg, died Thursday at the Regional Medical Center of NEA. He was a retired farmer. He was preceded in death by his wife, Almer Austin Smith, and by two daughters. Survivors include eight sons, Joseph Manuel Smith, Logan Lee Smith, Robert Dale Smith, Sherman W. Smith, Rodger Leuie Smith, Jimmy Wayne Smith and Arthur Steven Smith, all of Harrisburg, and John Dee Smith of Weiner; one daughter, Mary Gail Irvin of Harrisburg; 28 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren. Robert Lee Smith Sr., 58, of 333 Mildred St., Trumann, died Sunday from injuries sustained in an automobile/train accident in Trumann. Born in Houston, he had lived in Trumann for the past 20 years. Add Bertig Spence, 91, of 708 Dwight St., Trumann, died Sunday morning at his home. Born at Paragould, he had lived in Trumann for the past 56 years. He was a former resident of Lepanto. He was retired from the Singer Co. and was to the Methodist faith. Survivors include four daughters, Alice McPherson, Clytee Willis and Mavis Campbell, all of Trumann and Joann Mullins of Bono; two sons, Buddy Spence of Trumann and Billy Spence of Jonesboro; 20 grandchildren; 12 stepgrandchildren; 55 greatgrandchildren; four great-greatgrandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, one stepdaughter, one grandson, four sisters and three brothers. DEATH - Henry A. Spoon was born February 22, 1900 at Elijah, Missouri, died November 7, 1839 at Memphis Baptist Hospital at Memphis, Tennessee. Burial was in Tyronza Cemetery, near Marked Tree, Arkansas. He leaves his wife and six children to mourn his passing, his mother, three sisters and one brother, Charles E. Spoon of Douthat, Oklahoma. Mrs. Minnie Langley of Arditta, Missouri; Mrs. Mary Coble of Clovis, California; Mrs. Ida Estes of Bakersfield, his mother also of Bakersfield, his father having proceeded him in death four years. He leaves a host of friends.
Henry A. Spoon was born February 22, 1900, at Elijah, Missouri, and died November 7, 1939 at the Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. He has lived at Marked Tree, Arkansas, the past four years. His death came as a shock to his relatives and friends as he was only ill a short time, death being due to double pneumonia. He leaves his wife, who formerly was Miss Ona Hall and six children, who are Vernon Eugene, age 13; Dorothy D., 12; Rose Marie, 8: Shirley Ann, 7; Charles, 6; Kenneth, 4. He is also survived by his mother, Mrs. H. C. Spoon of Douthat, Oklahoma, three sisters, Mrs. Ida Estes of Bakersfield, Missouri, Mrs. Minnie Langley of Hocomo, this county, Mrs. Mary Coble of Clovis, California and a host of other relatives and friends to mourn his loss. His father proceeded him in death four years ago. He was a member of the Pentecostal church and was converted and baptized last August, and lived a devoted Christian life. She had lived in Jonesboro since 1947. Survivors include two sons, Billy Staggs and Daniel Wayne Staggs, both of Jonesboro; one sister, Ebbertine "Ebby" Phillips of Harrisburg; two brothers, Carl Spears of Memphis and G.W. W.W. Swanner, 83, of Harrisburg, died Thursday at St. Bernard's Regional Medical Center in Jonesboro. Born in Athens, AL, he spent most of his life in the Harrisburg area. He was a retired farmer and a member of the First Assembly of God in Harrisburg. He also was a member of the Poinsett County Cattlemen's Association and the American Legion. Charley Gordon Swindle, 80, of 26233 Hwy 69 West, Trumann, died Saturday at his residence in Trumann of natural causes. Swindle was born in Thayer, MO and had lived most of his life in Trumann. He was a retired farmer, veteran of the U.S. Army and of WWII and was a member of the Melton Avenue Church of Christ in Trumann. Swindle was preceded in death by one sister, one brother and was the son of the late Raymond and May Whitehead Swindle. He is survived by his wife, Donna Lee Swindle of the home; two nieces, Louise Rients and Willie Mae Tobin, both of Peoria, IL, and a host of friends.
