Leeper/Powell Family

This picture was sent to me by a great great granddaughter of George Robert Brooks of Callaway County, Missouri - grandfather of these children

Brooksie Powell (1899 Callaway Co., MO -- 1993 OK), buried at Holly Springs Cemetery, married Joseph W. Forbess.

She was a elementary school teacher in the Trumann, AR public schools for 34 years. she received her BS in Education from Arkansas State. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Eudora, AR and a former member of the First Baptist Church in Trumann.

Brooksie was eighteen years old when her mother died. She likely cared for the two Leeper children until after the death of their father 3 years later. She and her brother returned to MO., and then came back to AR.


John Powell, born 22 July 1902 Callaway County, Mo., died September 1984 at Trumann, Poinsett Co., AR. He moved back to Trumann after retirement. He had married, but no children. Buried at Jonesboro Cemetery.

Mr. Powell was born in Fulton, MO, and had bern a resident of Trumann since 1980. Formerly from Des Plaines, Ill. He was a retired employee of U. S. Steel and a member of the Mokane Baptist Church in Missouri. He was a veteran of the Armed Forces.

Funeral Monday morning at 10:00 am in the Chapel of the Thompson Funeral Home with Rev. Stewart Pickle presiding.

(Death certificate lists Ollie Guy Powell as the father, no mother listed, but his mother was Carrie Bell Brooks).

Brooksie and John Powell were the children of Carrie Belle Brooks and Ollie Powell of Callaway County, MO. Carrie B. was married 2nd to Clarence "Red" Leeper and had two daughters: [1] Ethel Irene and her younger sister, [2] Mildred E. Leeper b. 1915. They were orphaned at very young ages, four and two years old at the death of their mother in 1917, and three years later, the death of their father.

Both buried at Holly Springs Cemetery, Harrisburg. Carrie has a tombstone, but he must not have a stone, as it not listed in the cemetery listings.

The two Leeper daughters were taken back to Missouri by their guardian, Sam Cole, believed to be an uncle or relative of the Leeper family (court appointed), and raised in Montgomery and Callaway Counties, MO.

Ethel Irene Leeper married Peter Monica in the St. Louis area and died in 1971.
Mildred E. Leeper married Henry Pugh and died in Henry County, Iowa in 1993.


Clarence Leeper was the son of John W. Leeper and Elizabeth Ferrier.

Carrie Belle Brooks Powell Leeper was born Mar. 29, 1879 [1,2] Callaway County, Missouri - died February 24, 1917 [1] Poinsett County, Arkansas. Carrie married first, Ollie G. Powell. She was married in the family home in Callaway County. They were the parents of four children, two died in childhood. Ollie Powell was the son of John Powell and Nannie Johnson, born 29 December 1879; died 1 June 1927; buried in Hams Prairie Cemetery, Callaway County, Missouri

The oldest child of Brooksie and John Powell:

George Robert Brooks was born September 30, 1939 and died January 8, 1908 [3,7,8] in Callaway County. He married March 14, 1878 [6] to Martha B. Mosley in Callaway County. Martha was born Feb. 12, 1861 and died the 15th of November, 1910.
